In retrospective, what do you think of the sexualisation in video games back then?

It was maybe a little over the top.

If it's things like the sex mini-game or that nonsense in God of War III or I think it was Witcher, I think it takes it too far and should be content for another genre and separate category of video games. I don't need full on nudity and it's mostly to do with comfortability.
Couldn't disagree any more.

This is what made The Witcher 3 the best videogame of all time (minus controls/gameplay/combat), being a truly adult and intelligent experience in every possible way.
I know this may feel weird to some dorks but seduction, sex and attraction are driving factors of people's life and happen to be huge and significant portions of their existence (and arguably the very best part of it). The Witcher 3 portray this perfectly.
Yes, the actual sex scenes could be better but when it comes to mainstream videogames that's the best there is.

Does it make it impossible to play certain sections in front of our spouses/children/parents/guests watching? Who the fuck cares, just play when you're on your own.

Threads like these are always filled with funny hypocrites who say they don't want such stuff in their games but go masturbate on porn bewtween a gaming session and the other. Makes no sense.

Why you people think sexy design = you watch porn. Are you telling me people only put good looking actors in movies because people want watch porn? I don’t get the logic behind it.
When your entire basis for enjoying a period/genre of Video games is purely because of the sex appeal, (especially in such a broad medium) I think you'd be better off going to the industry which built itself off the back of lewd images and hot girls.

It was funny and nowadays people would call it based, but I don’t know if that’s what made those games that memorable.

Maybe we’re getting it wrong: the minds behind the games and its designs were what really made it shine.
Nowadays games are designed by talentless people focused only on politics, diversity and gender, creativity is at its lowest.

You can see people like Josef Fares making creative and interesting stuff, but I can only imagine a purple haired woman taking an beloved IP and destroying it.

The same thing applies to video games.

This is 10x more badass.

Women dressed in pantyhose and heels with gigantic balloon sized tits kicking ass is just stupid. Make them make sense.

Miss it. Especially in a game series that was known for it. The over pussification of millennials and Gen z and pushing feminism are ruining so many things, not just games. You know I got mortal Kombat 11 when they brought back the sexy outfits. I loved quiet in mgs5. It's not about mastrabation which sjws love to point to. No one is doing that. It's about aesthetics. Look at old conan and red Sonia or old Clyde Caldwell art form D&D. Classic muscle and skin, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Why are you playing games like that in front of your mom anyways. If your too young you should stick to Lego or something tame.

Sexualization never had anything wrong to begin with, unless it's about literal minors, those who are too bothered by it can just go watch something else, it's not something I look forward to but can understand why they did it that way, also this "modern audiences" thing is bullshit, every gen Z and late millennials I've seen can't stop talking Dualipa ass and sensuality whenever a post about her is shared on my social media feeds

No people just like good looking character in their games, in fact those games with "sex appeal" doesn't have any sex or nudity just character with sexy design.

But I guess these are okay and considered "brave".

The tag just keeps getting more accurate each day...

You mean to tell me that characters like Chun Li, Bayonetta, Juri, etc all with extremely fit, toned bodies fit for athletic stressful activities such as fighting (which also just happen to be sexy) is fucking stupid? How the fuck does that make any sense? Do you even PLAY video games?

Stop comparing movies to games

Learn to read and interpret things bro. Goddamn.

I said women in heels and skirts.

Here you are bringing up body types and "being extremely fit", things I said absolutely nothing about.

All I said was its stupid to see women in HEELS AND SKIRTS destroying armies of soldiers. Be it in film or gaming.

How that triggers you, I don't know, you need to chill out and read before you come at me again. Getting annoying.

Is Chun-Li in a skirt and heels like the gif I posted?

No. She wears boots and tights. So it makes sense.

Is Bayonetta in heels and skirt? No. She has guns for shoes, and is clearly a magical being/witch, so who cares what makes sense. Plus she is in tights.

So what the hell are you talking about? lol

It doesn't matter at all, the target audience was young men in most of those games back then, they tried to appeal to what they wanted to see. Honestly Id argue that our society is over sexualized in comparison to anything those games did back in the day lol.

Personally tho, id like romance/active sex focus to be toned down/cut out of art/media more in general unless it's directly related to a story/gameplay in a meaningful way. Most of the time its just bad writing in stories or is copy/pasta thrown in without adding any value the art it's included in, it can really chug the pacing of a story or kill my sense of disbelief. Too bad that shit sells like hot cakes.

We can have both....I want both
iaOATZK.png

but we DO have both. There are plenty of games which have tons of fanservice, Shantae for example filled with loads of that shit, so much so that it's a major part of the franchise's identity. (and i actually really like that franchise)

It's just that like listed in the OP and in some examples here, many people's enjoyment of video games is played in large part due to the hot women/sexualization, to the point where if someone (like yours truly) comes along and criticizes it or isn't as passionate, people end up devolving into conversations about wokeness, pussification, Gen Z and other trash that has nothing to do with anything i might have said. Example in the OP about the guy who only played Soul Calibur because of the girls especially pisses me off because... It's Soul Calibur dude, its amazing! How can you see the amazing combat, graphics, story and gameplay and then out of all of that take away that 2 of the girls were hot?!?

Ultimately I can't be arsed to care if it's 'gone' or 'lessened now' because in my 10+ years of enjoying gaming hardly like 3% of it has to do with sexualisation. Even graphics plays more of a role, would rather the game itself look sexy than the characters in it LMFAO

BTW, you can scale images to be smaller by clicking on them and dragging by the edges, it can be done even on phone. I'd advise doing before posting, that as your images take way too much space when I reply to someone. I discovered that trick not to long ago and it makes reading the posts for me and other people a lot more pleasant

I'm just sick of this stupid argument about sexy design = porn, you can like sexy design in games without needing to be porn.

Yeah. I can identify with the would I want a mom or niece to walk in and see that… nah not really.

Could the game be just as good without those aspects; awesome. Awesome game and awesome shit to look at.

Is the game not that great but has band aided that with the boob; yeah nah. Happy if you’re low on “oh look boobs, awesome” quota but it’s just kinda laughable.

Boobs can also be so over the top that a good game kinda gets silly or worse distracting. MK sometimes it’s stick women wearing pillows on their chest. I don’t hate it because I love MK and part of MK is being over the top. But it kind of lost the plot around the 2000s there. That or they just didn’t have the technology to render me a nice boob.

I obviously noticed it when I was a kid but did it make me disrespect females?

NO.

In today's games I don't mind either way as long as they're not wilfully trying to make female characters ugly or get rid of them or replace them because wokeness.

Younger gamers can't really purchase older rated games unless their parents buy it for them unwittingly without checking.

OP comparatif is so weird. Having a sexe mini game is something, having fighting game character being sexy is another, Ivy in SC is same as Kratos. It's not like there was a mini game in SC2 where you play mitsurugi and game tell you to fuck Taki, and Taki still wear clothes, very sexy but those are clothes, Aphrodite was also i think with 2 others ladies and all were naked, and also making the sexual noises. So.

It needs to be to a reasonable level. Like you said, sex minigames are way over the top. They should have just shown kratos go into the room and leave the rest to our imagination.

Gore and extreme violence is pubertal nonsense I wish completely disappeared.

Sexy designs are awesome and I want it back. Taki was great, old-school Lara Croft too👌

Sadly violence won this battle, at least in the west. Some devs may have a gore on/off option but nobody have a sexy on/off option.

Modders has somewhat saved the downfall though.

I'm generally ok with sexy characters in games, but when the designers try too hard it becomes Taki tacky. Like most female characters in Soulcalibur are great but you have to snort-chuckle when you see some of the Ivy designs.
It's all a matter of good taste, if you do it right you can pull off sexy, violent, rebellious, political, ... it's only an issue when it's badly done.

I mostly play Japanese games so yeah, you guess what I like :p

A guildmate of mine in WoW said it a long time ago: if you're going to look at your characters ass for hundreds of hours, you might as well make it a cute ass.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the celebration of sexy bodies, male or female. No amount of namecalling or "shaming" will ever convince me otherwise. We are all animals in the end with sexual needs and desires. It's natural.
No, i don't want to look at a fat hambeast, and no, it's neither brave nor beautiful nor healthy. Let's bring back fit and slim aesthetics.

Where in my post did i ever say that "We should protect videogame women"? You're too angry to even read properly.

this is what i mean, why the fuck do people get so angry about this shit? even if they're not (usually) sexualized, pretty & cute girls still exist in many Japanese video games today. Elden ring which came out last year has plenty of pretty girls in it, same for Bayonetta 3 and GG Strive.

I remember people getting all in a tizzy about RE4 Remake and calling it woke because IDK, Ashley wears a jacket now and you can't look up her skirts anymore?
How is that the only thing that makes RE4 great? How does that invalidate all the other changes RE4 Remake took to elevate RE4's visual style and gameplay to modern standards?

Y'all too horny to think straight lol

People are not "angry", they are disappointed because some retards thinks that colored pixels + some code are real people and need to be protected from perverts eyes.

Who the fucks give a fuck if a tity is too big or if some VIRTUAL cloths are too tight... People like different aesthetics on things... Just because you have some mental issues and see virtual characters as real people doesn't mean that sane people should partake in your delusions of white knighting colored pixels.

Censorship willnever be the answer and the human body should never be vilified.

But bigger problem is that people like you think you know better of what kind of aesthetics people are/aren't allowed to like.

I don't like that it's just about the sexualisation of women.
To this date the sexualisation of men seems totally fine with most people. Muscles, naked chest, edgy face, full hair, sexy beard etc etc
People will eventually have to accept that there are some double standards that will always exist in life and this is one of them that will never go away.

For example, a public shirtless man will never be seen in the same taboo nature as a public shirtless woman. We have ourselves and our entire history to blame for this perception, but in the end it is what it is.

I still laugh at SEGA America censoring the likes of Fighting Megamix, Lunar 2 or the D2 for sexual imagery or the pathetic Nintendo lot for making out Night Trap had graphic sexual footage or needing to cut out Duke's girls in Duke 3D
I also hated the double standards in the UK, where you could see more sex in Eastenders or have a page 3 girl in the paper, but if any game had sex it in, it was banned or 18 rated

We've come such a long way, now in schools, you can have men with basically nothing on dancing in front of kids and giving them sex education.

Never said we should protect videogame women or that they're real people.
You're proving my point that you guys are too angry to think straight. you're taking words that you THINK i said and putting them into my mouth. Creating strawmen.
Unless you can prove to me I said anything along the lines of "we should protect videogame women because they are real people" you're basically spewing nonsense.

People like to look at the other sex, it’s all natural. Nothing wrong with sexy characters.
The fact that such trivialities are considered a problem to some prople while brutally dismembering enemies is A.O.K. is just disturbing And sexualized male characters are seemingly no issue.
The forced uglification we have so often nowadays is also concerning, so i am glad to see that not every dev jumped on that bandwagon.

Not specially a fan but I was/I am totally fine with it, and for whatever: women or men, we play and watch movies to get out of reality (mostly) not to find the same (sometimes boring) reality. Politically correct in our games is probably one the saddest thing from our era, and people getting offended by anything is really the worst from nowadays.

Gaming going mainstream is both the best and the worst thing ever happened to this industry.

Is the movie "Equilibrium" what awaits us ?
Considering that I’ve had to buy books that are already or risk being edited/taken out of print then I’d say we are already there.

My opinion on the topic: there wasn’t nearly enough sexualisation then and there certainly isn’t enough now. Men need their safe spaces too, and any (hetro) man who says he’s not into cartoon tits is a beta soycuck!!

Yep. And OFC Elden Ring as well.... The female character designs in that game are great. Ranni and Melina are some of my favorites.

Personally I perfer more cute, pretty girls in video games as opposed to explicit sexiness, less embarassing when someone walks in, isn't overly distracting, and it ends up being more memorable to me as opposed to the big titted sexy girls. Great example is Hat Kid from A Hat in Time or May from Guilty Gear Strive.
though in the case of Bayonetta, Samus and Lara Croft those are just straight badassery, I wouldn't have their designs any other way
The Elden Ring ladies have sent me to horny jail

No, I never want it disappear same way I dont want sexy design disappear in video game. I mean you could easily avoid games that has gore and violence.
Easily? Means avoiding like 90% of all AAA games. 😕

I’m just glad devs like Nintendo and and Insomniac still exist, means I can actually play some AAA games in the living room without telling the family to leave the house.

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart seriously gave me one of my absolute best family playthroughs ever, kids sitting beside me during the whole playthrough, the game was even voiced in swedish so I didn’t have to translate anything, for them it was like watching a high quality TV show and for me it was awesome family gaming time without dropping down to some low quality kids game.

Zelda BOTW was the same, not localized to swedish but it’s not a talky game so it was still awesome. Can’t wait to jump into TOTK soon!

The increase in graphics fidelity is probably why sexualisation has been dialed back; the more realistic a game looks, the more stupid certain outfits can look... but I still enjoy good looking characters in games, they don't have to be overly sexy though.

Sex scenes and mini games, back in the day as a kid... always cringe.
