Is Mario Kart World too casual?

If 200cc is anything like it is in MK8D, it’ll be plenty challenging. I get my ass handed to me in that mode on some tracks.

Otherwise, I mean yeah. It’s Mario Kart. They maximize fun, not difficulty.

I don't think it is challenging like Double Dash is, where you can pretty much guarantee wins by skill alone. The 200cc just takes the garbo mechanics of MK since the Wii and just makes them more frustrating because the small ways you can try to legislate for things in 150cc and Mirror modes where you might quickly roll-in a double pickup and consume the coin straight of the bat and then press and hold for the banana or shell to defend an incoming red shell, or throw the banana or shell forward so that you can hit it, just before a blue shell hits - so you are in recovery and invulnerable - you can't execute that at 200cc, because of the lag on using your weapons and the instantaneous speed at which shells hit, or you get rammed, lighting-ed, blooper inked with the AI catch-up mode on steroids.

The inking is typically timed for corners needing accelerate, brake and drift to thread the apex to stay on, so perfect blooper ink use is pretty much indefensible IMO, which is not challenging or fun for me.

Isn’t this game copying Forza Horizon? I assume the tracks shown here are from the open world part of the game, so there will be point A to B races. The traditional cup mode will have classic tracks.

24 items would make small courses a cluster fuck.

But there's nothing stopping them adding smaller or more curvy courses to the game

All of the tracks are part of the open world, so even the more classic tracks are still stitched together in the overall map. In the Treehouse video, you can see old Mario Kart tracks that now basically have alternate entrances/paths to fit into the open world.

But when you do play a traditional cup, the track layouts change slightly (like a path will be closed off and you’ll be forced to loop) to make them feel more like normal tracks.

It's always been casual, but Nintendo made it even more casual with the open-world scheme. My little daughter will probably be driving outside of the races.

That makes sense. I should watch the Treehouse video.

Lame excuse.
I concur. Rated E doesnt inherently make it a kids game. It doesnt patronize you or kidify itself for you when playing as an adult or child, it just happens to be a fun game that kids and adults can play

Pokemon has become more and more of a kids game with how much hand-holding there is now but most Nintendo first party games are just that, e for everyone

Edit: also knockout grand prix sounds like battle royale kind of mode, that already sounds like a challenge and fun as hell

Ironically, one of the popular members of the Mario Kart Wii community said that item stun times are more like Double Dash than Wii or 8. Getting hit pushes you forward.

Lightning got super-nerfed. Blue shell also got sightly nerfed. You can now hold 20 coins instead of just 10. Rail switching and wall running combos for boosting. Basically less luck and more skill expression.

I hated Mario Wonder, and all the new Nintendo staff stuff after Miyamoto, it just looks like Deluxe welded with Tony Hawks Pro Skater in MKW.

I don't hate MK8D, I still own three copies (WiiU, 2x Switch) but I haven't enjoyed a MK fully since the DS. Coin pickups are naff and just adds an extra layer to disguise the cheap AI algorithms cheating.

Now they have ML AI in tensor cores in the Switch 2 a return to Double Dash with proper ML AI opposition would have been better. DLC was a mistake for MK8 and deluxe IMO, and was pretty crappy overall with the new track designs. The 200cc mode is obviously at odds with the original game's core design and feels untested and very un-Nintendo of Miyamoto era. I can honestly say I don't want anything that the current Nintendo are making, even MK surprisingly enough.

it's a game for kids

At same time that I don't think theres anything wrong with Mario Kart, I also think this is a extremelly low effort post.
Yeah, lets just say its for kids just because it looks like it. As if most of people who buy Switch and its games are adults(most parents as well) and Nintendo clearly market to all ages. You could even see Mario Kart World video in the direct has adults playing and introducing their social gadget.
This is such low brain answer to avoid any form of criticism.

The game isn't out yet or previewed deeply holy shit
They did do an extensive showcase the past two days during treehouse, and the presenter literally did a grind to wall bounce to grind to get to a higher shortcut platform, ending in a boost to go up in position.

As an SSX fan this is great news to me.

However, I also think they are still hiding something. During the treehouse if you look closely, there are unique Yoshi and Toad NPCs in the world who were standing around in specific locations, not moving.

This leads me to believe there might be some sort of story mode or RPG mode, and the speech bubbles those NPC were supposed to have weren’t in the demo build. There could even be other 1-time minigames like a taxi service.

I’m just wondering because the game is going to have a full length direct later this month. That’s a lot of presentation time for one game.

Double Dash is the GOAT Mario Kart game

I mean, we shouldn't really judge it before it's out, there's not really enough to go off of as far as I know. Other than, you know, it's Mario Kart, and as much as some may not want to admit... It's always been casual. Sure, people's skill levels fluctuate, but it's always been casual.

Mario Kart has essentially been a party game since MK64

SMK is the only title in the series which can be considered a 100% true racing game

Impossible to tell before I’ve played it. There’s so many more movement options with the rails, wall jumping, multiple tricks in a row etc. The track design is bound to feel very different.

But I imagine that when you get good you’ll be grinding and wall jumping all over the place and easily outmaneuver any casual player.
