I've Never Played Metal Slug

How is the ps1 version of x? And the xbla version of 3?

The PS1 version of MSX was the once I played a shitton of back in the day. It's a fine playable version, but it's missing some frames of animation. It has this great gallery of artwork unlockable and a Combat School side game that's pretty fun. If you can get it for cheap, there's worse options out there.

edit: I think Metal Slug 7 is the best of the "post-MS3" Slug games, but I still don't like the inventory system they added in MS6.

Metal slug was one of my first arcade experiences, and let me say I've loved it ever since. Personally though, I prefer playing with a controller. And if you have a gamecube compatible wii, playing the anthology collection with the gamecube controller is the way to go. The no hit flashes sucks I guess but it's not a gamebreaker, never bothered me when I played through the whole collection.

MS games are on psp(-> vita) too.
Play them because they are incredible(at least the first ones)!

Go to eBay.

Buy Metal Slug Complete on Wii & Metal Slug XX on XBLA/PSP.

Enjoy.

Metal Slug Complete on Wii is the best way to enjoy the first 7 games. Improved emulation over the other versions of it and the Classic Controller support you need to enjoy the game.

XX is a choice of what system you have available. The only difference between the 2 is the 360 version has co-op. So if that's a deciding factor then there's the choice.

Have fun.

P.S: Fio's Best Pony!!!

^Isn't XX just Metal Slug 7 stretched to widescreen?

Metal Slug X and 3 are the best games in the series IMO, but I don't think they are available atm for PS3 or 360.

Metal Slug 3 is available for iOS in USA, and the MS Anthology is also available for the PSP and Vita via PSN, however the games are more fun when played with a friend.

Yeah, but I ignore it because XX has Leona for DLC which makes for the superior product.

3 is actually on XBLA. But I'd never suggest playing that version when Metal Slug Complete exists. Unless you need to add to your Gamerscore or it happens to be on sale and you can't get it anywhere else.

And so I make myself very clear here. Metal Slug Complete ≠ Metal Slug Anthology. Metal Slug Complete is the JP version of MSA and improves on it in every way. Especially the Wii version which has Classic Controller support which MSA lacks. So if you're going to play a version and don't mind spending some cash on it then MSC on Wii is the way to go. I Imported it years ago and never looked back.

I can't vouch for the PS2, PSP or PC versions of MSC but they do exist. So if you want to guinea pig it then feel free.

  • Contra is 8-way directional while Metal Slug is 360 degree
  • Weapons in Metal Slug typically consume an ammunition gauge while Contra special weapons are infinite.
  • Platforming is typically a larger aspect of Contra than it is of Metal Slug
  • Metal Slug has melee, which is encouraged by the scoring system.
  • Contra has had a multiple weapon system since 3 that has been developed since then across multiple entries. Metal Slug only allowed one weapon at a time until 6, when it introduced a multiple weapons system similar to Contra 3's.(Two weapons at a time. Only lose equipped weapon on death until game over. I think you have the option to just store both and use pistol as well but I'm not sure.)
  • Contra kind of turned into a Boss Rush type of game in later entries while Metal Slug has always been more about challenging enemy encounter layouts.
  • Metal Slug has been primarily developed for Arcade while Contra for home consoles. and their content I think reflects that.

I personally like the Contra franchise over Metal Slug as a whole, but the sprite work and style in Metal Slug is top notch and worth experiencing first hand.

The best entries of both series are definite must plays either way if you're a fan of this style of game.

Another point of difference is that (for the most part) touching enemies do not kill you in Metal Slug while they do in Contra. Enemies in Metal Slug only kill you when they hit you with their specific attack (though some things, like tanks, will just run you over). It does a lot to add freedom of movement for the player to quickly jump into a group and melee them or run past some guys in order to avoid projectiles.

I thought MS2 was a lot better than X other than the technical issues...

Other way around, at least on the Neo Geo. MS2 had a ton of slowdown which was then fixed in X.

Also, Metal Slug 2 is so not politically correct :O The entire first level is shooting dudes with turbans.

Ah OK lol, I think I stll have 7 for the NDS...or I traded it off...I enjoyed it for the most part.

Interesting didn't know about that.

Oh, Metal Slug Advance for the GBA, I think that's another good MS game if only because it's SP mode is pretty good. JPN ver. has blood whereas all English versions have uh sweat...or white stuff replacing it.

Earlier in the thread someone just confirmed Anthology on Wii doesn't support the classic controller. Are you saying the Japanese version does?

In that case, I need to find the japanese version of Metal Slug Advance.

Also Metal Slug 1,2 or X, 3, 5, and 6 are must plays imo. 5 for the music alone.

What would be the best way to get a japanese version of Metal Slug Advance without fear of running into a bootleg? Just through Amazon?

MSC supports the classic controller and (or) an arcade stick.

That's the version to get if you don't want to go the VC way

In my opinion, X is superior to 3 thanks to its pacing. 3 is full of frankly tedious segments, like the zombie parts which, while awesome at first, quickly wear out their welcome. Ditto the swimming.

X has better pacing then 3 because it doesn't go on for-fuckin'-ever with that finale

But i hate MSX's final boss since no missing it in my experience is part luck of the draw of getting some decent weapons from the UFOs. Otherwise you're stuck with your shitty pistol against bullet sponges and a boss with a stupid amount of health.

So... the Japanese version of Anthology? Because I don't have a Japanese Wii and don't wanna go through all the crap of softmodding.

My favorite is Metal Slug 1, then X, 2 and 3.

3 has higher production values but it is a little too hard for me. Zombie level is gold though.

Yes.

And softmodding isn't even a thing anymore. There isn't reason to have a Wii and not softmod it at this juncture. It's just that simple to do. As long as you can follow instructions there's really no way to do anything to mess it up.

And if you need some help then go to the thread and they'll be glad to answer any questions.

That's not how you spell Eri

No. I spelled Fiolina Germi very correctly.

Fio > Eri. Just the way things are. And has Eri been top tier in a fighting game? Didn't think so! So Fio wins!!! And bonus points for glasses. Admitted weak point!

I have gone through Metal Slug 1, 3, X and V. Only 3 feels like a special and memorable game (that zombie level). Fun goofy hard as nails series nevertheless.

Definitely one my favorite arcade games right next to The Punisher.

I remember having so much fun with Punisher that I had to get it on Sega Genesis.

Both awesome games.

I think I've settled on something like this when I recently played through all of them again:

X > 1 > 2 > 3 > 6 >> 5 > 4

I still really enjoy the first game, so it's listed higher than 2 despite my love for X. I don't like 3 as much as some other people for reasons that have already been listed--the pacing is really suspect (not just level-wise but other things like bosses with slightly too much health), and I don't like how so much of the game is spent with your feet off the ground. 4 is hands down the blandest of the bunch, and I'm not a fan of the combo thing. 5 is basically a crappier (and arguably incomplete-feeling) throwback to 3. 6 was a surprise for me because it did a lot of new things that worked (and finally introduced some stuff I wanted out of the series like bigger differences between characters), but a few things in it, especially that horrible drilling section, bring it down for me. I tried a bit of 7 and XX a while back but not enough to form an opinion about them.

That said, I really would've liked if the scoring systems in most of these games were better. If you want high scores, you'll have to play in a really boring way for most of them (I hope you like knifing).

Well let's see...

-Anthology on the PS2 is around $20 right now (admittedly on sale from $30).

-Complete on the Wii is around $100.

-Buying the three important games on Virtual Console comes out to around $30.

Yes but at least I can play it with a standard controller or even a stick. I just have to see how much it costs compared to buying three Virtual Console games.

Man I have no idea. All I know is they're supposed to be Yakuza. I just couldn't stop laughing at Pikachu's expression.

Not all. (School)gangs and motorbike gangs in general as well. You know this oldschool manga, where they go to a school and challenge strong guys? Which was quite common during the medivel period to challenge martial art schools because your school is "superior" if you win. (Happened in China too.) You know Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO)? He was first introduced in the manga Shonan Junai Gumi before appearing in GTO again. In it he's the leader of a street gang. Onizuka has a huge coat as well with (atrocious) handwritten writings about his awesomeness on his back. You know Akira? Is was influenced by a japanese subculture of motorbike gangs -> Bōsōzoku
There's no deep meaning anymore though, this is just popculture and mostly used for fun or action.

100 bucks?
Nah, son. It is not that important to get Complete.
