Japanese Sales: 2012 Jul 02 - Jul 08

Would someone mind making a comparison chart of the first couple of years of DS/PSP/Vita/3DS/GBA ?
Comparison of what? Hardware or Software?

Garaph can definitely do the hardware and maybe even the software.
Yeah, software totals (at least what's known from Top 30s and 1000s and so on) can be charted by using super groups like "DS all".

Here are hardware and software comparisons, though the 3DS/Vita software stuff is a few weeks behind the released numbers.

Well, since F1 Race Stars is evidently a real thing, that probably means 3 more Japanese games are Wii U bound:

Deca Sports 12 (Konami / Hudson)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 (Konami)
Warriors Orochi 3 (Tecmo Koei)

I don't have any doubt about DQX being a million seller... thing is there's a Wii U version, so let's see how can we analyze that. Don't think many people will wait for that one though... they'll probably just buy both!

Right now I think that is unlikely. If I had to bet, I would say 500K or so for the Wii version. Wii U version..who knows.

500k Wii has always been my target. Roughly double what FFXI PS2+360 managed.

Though it going higher wouldn't surprise me too much. MH3 also carried a fee for multiplayer, and that game managed ~1.1m on Wii. Granted it had free single player, but who buys MH in Japan for that?

They made no effort to advertise Time Travelers. And it's a new IP. Not surprising that it's en route to bombing at levels close to Guild01 (both had 'famous' creators behind the projects so I wouldn't consider that as having much effect by itself). Hardly any talk on 2ch either, in any of the subforums.

Demo was well done. Whomever thought it would be a good idea to use it as a bonus for Guild01 might as well be fired. It'd be similar to adding a demo of Shadowrun instead of Halo3 to Crackdown.

Are you talking about the gamestop italy list leaked? Was there also Deca Sport?
the strange thing about F1 is that it was anticipated by Codemaster CEO for the Wii U, listed by Gamestop for Wii U, but no Wii U version was announced today...

Good ST for Calciobit. Sad about Time travelers

Is there some Level 5 curse? Is there some 'bad rep' with gamers in Japan between them and Level 5? As naive Japan loving Westerners we kind of look past the quality and keep asking 'Why did Ni No Kuni fail?' and talk about their titles because to us in the US and Europe we don't know why Level 5 titles keep failing release after release because we love their intrinsic 'Japanese-ness'...

So yes, Japan-GAF or Japan-board-reading-GAF; is there a common mistrust of Level 5 with Japanese gamers these days?

Yeah, in Europe "Deca Sports" is "Sports Island", and it was on the GS Italy list. RIP Hudson. :(

And given Nintendo's insane Wii U scheduling, the F1 thing isn't too surprising and is basically following the same pattern others have (Blops 2, EA Sports, etc). Pretty soon the number of unannounced Wii U games we know about is going to be bigger than the official list.

I thought PES was interesting though, I wonder if they'll make it Playmaker or just drop that now. Did they ever do PM controls for Move on PS3? Would also be funny if Wii U got PES before Vita does...

thank you! I'm hating all this secrecy...
that said: I'd love to see both PES approach and F1 approach to the gamepad (or sega all star racing), I hope they'll show something sooner or later...

The problems with Level 5 solely fall upon Level 5 itself. They're very bad at reading the market (Gundam AGE), poorly handling their once-successful properties by flooding the market with yearly sequels and ports (Inazuma Eleven), or just flat out not trying at all (Guild series).

Are there any statistics of televisions per household for Japan? US in 2010 seems to be 83% households have two or more.

Could this be an interesting dynamic with Wii U adoption in countries where households have just one shared TV set?

First day sellthrough

Pocket Soccer League: Calciobit - 50%
Taiko no Tatsujin: Chibi Dragon to Fushigi na Orb - 20%
Resistance: Burning Skies - 30%
Time Travelers - ahaha

Yes!!! Go go go, Calciobit !!!. Im glad that im not the only one that care about this type of football/ soccer sim !!!!!. I wonder how big was the first shipment.

Is Calciobit just like the Kairsoft game?

Yes, pretty much like Pocket League Story, but i think Calcio Bit has more options and the gfx are more "cute" than PLS

I'd have seen Ni no Kuni sequel on 3DS, without the book. I mean, over 500k people bought the DS one, and even though just, let's say, half of the people were satisfied so to buy a follow-up, it could have succeeded.

Wasn't Ninokuni supposed to be L5's new big franchise? Although after how terribly the PS3 version did I could totally see them scrapping that idea.

That's a shame because though the DS entry was overshipped, it managed to sell over half a million units, which is not bad at all for a new IP in the jRPG genre.

PS3 was just the wrong console for it, DS version shows there's a decent market for a family oriented Ghibli JRPG. Depending on how Wii U goes, Level-5 should consider a "Baku Boost" type release to gauge further interest in the IP. Gamepad Magic Master is so obvious it hurts.

It's one of Hino's pet projects, so I think we'll see it again regardless.

I firmly think that Ninokuni on PS3 was a big demographic mistake. It was so well tailored for the DS fanbase, with pokemon, inazuma, dragon quest...I mean: I think that L5 was great in following nintendo's demographic with different-original approach, while on PS3 it was totally un-focused

I hope they'll choose the right platform for their incoming "Magic watch" game (I don't remember the name) that seems to be very similar in terms of style, concept and so on to other existing brands present on Nintendo console.

I think that, from what we saw about it, 3ds and or wii U could be a good fit. Probabl wii u over the 3ds if they'll be smart enough to exploit the NFC chance (similar to Skylander)

The real reason why NNK will never be a huge success is that the word of mouth from those who played it pegged it as another Level 5 RPG from the bad old days, just with a better coat of paint on it.

Last time L5 announced a game with no platform was TT, and it turned out to be 3DS (with PSP/Vita ports). Ghoul Watch seems like Wii U given the quality of the visuals, plus the "second screen" ghost catching seems like it's tailor made for the Gamepad.

I also used to think it could be Vita, but the way things are going now, even if it was at one point I doubt it is now.

Well I think that sales HW numbers could be a good reason to skip Vita for such a new and risky project. Probably also the zero install base of the Wii U will follow the same reasoning, but I think that marketing it during Xmast season as a big exclusive. maybe being the only game exploiting in Japan that NFC novelty could be the right choice. but I think so especially for the demographic: from what we saw, it seems very in line with Pokemon and Dragon Quest look & feel (not in terms of gameplay, because we don't know nothing about it)

The problem is I think not enough people gave it a chance considering what a complete game it is in terms of production value. Not to mention one of the few titles where I actually felt like it was money well spent with the amount of content within the game itself and overall quality.

I think what hurt the brand more was the fact that they let the DS version come out first before the PS3 one. Truthfully if the book came with the PS3 version that would have made so much more sense considering how much you need to use the damned thing in game. Though then it takes away from the "virtual" finding pages to put the book back together and such among other things.

At least if you have both you then can put it to good use.

I still say NNK is the GOTY for 2011 within Japan, regardless of what "numbers" say.

Here's Yokai Watch:

Looks great graphically and the part where he scans his parents(?) for the ghost is almost a foreshadowing to the capability of the Wii U pad, ZombiU and Lego City Undercover do the same thing.

I almost forgot about that game. Although it does look kind of low budget if its a Wii U game. I was thinking more that it was a Vita game, but Wii U would make sense as well.

Edit: Just watched the video again and wow the in game part looks a lot better than I remember it looking.

Did we have video of LBX unveiling? I don't remember?

I could see Yokai Watch ending up on 3DS, but I dunno, if that was going to be the case I think they'd have just said so.

Also due to big pricedrops (wasnt it sold for as low as 900 yen at the end? Or maybe i'm mixing it up with one of the Zelda DS games). I agree that 500k is good, but if many people wont buy it before the game is very cheap, it depends on how the serie will go further.

I'm more interested in why Ace Attorney 5 has no platform yet. That seems like a simple thing to announce.

If they are making a higher res iOS version I don't see why they wouldn't throw a Vita port in there too. Phoenix Wright is one of the few series I feel fits perfectly on iOS. Ghost Trick was great

Capcom seems pretty gunshy on Vita. Weren't they suppossed to have a 2nd launch window game originally?

It was fun having Kid Icarus in the Top 50 for so long.

What's really gonna suck is the possibility of Mario Tennis Open selling more than KIU
