Junji Ito’s Uzumaki anime (Official Teaser)

This is a different conversation that is harder to engage with, because the people who want traditional media back are much harder to please than anyone else.
I'm not advocating for animators to go back to cells. Lots of anime has looked great in the cg era. Dandadan looks fantastic for example. Anyway, I certainly agree the second episode of this show wasn't as well animated. I still enjoyed it. Very creepy.

Super hard disagree, the vibes were though the roof.

Animation work is bad but man what a sick show. The atmosphere, the music, the grotesque body horror and the Lovecraftian horror.

Awesome episode.

Edit:

Big oof

watched eps 2. some parts are definitely much more janky than the 1st one, and I really wish they can just slow down the pacing a little. some parts really need a little more time to hit. I'm still happy with it over all but I wish it could be what it should be.

The fucking thing is Im seeing actual spirals in real life now.. wtf. Like my plate has a spiral on it. No joke.
Some animations in Metaphor ReFantazio are animated in a spiral :(

Seems it's not just the animation that dropped in quality for episode 2. The stencil and shading of the stairs was completely messed up here.

are you feeling a strong urge to twist yourself to fit inside a big bathing bucket? :messenger_grinning_sweat:

all jokes aside, spirals are rather common in our life be it man made items or nature stuff. don't sweat over it too much.

Exec producer comments on the quality dip

Four years for four episodes and this still happens? Bruh. We got more episodes of Hellsing Ultimate in that time that was a production nightmare behind the scenes. In less than 4 years we got every episode of Giant Robo minus the last. The series isn't even Sakuga heavy. ☠️☠️☠️

Episode 3's animation is much better than 2, thankfully. Hopefully the second episode was just an anomaly and it ends on a strong note.

Oh and Junji Ito himself has a voiceover credit in this episode :messenger_grinning_smiling:

What the fuck is this pacing lmao.

So far this has been a pretty shit adaptation, episode one had good to okay animation, second one was just cancer and the third one was mostly okay to bad animation.
The pacing is all over the place and they are jumping from one story to another without giving anything time to breathe.

yeah, episode 3's animation is a little better than 2's, but I think it's mainly due to there were a lot of more dark environment shoots compared to 2. and yes the pacing is just not working for what it's supposed to be. it still does get the overall vibe right, but it really is disappointing to see what started as such a promising work turned out to be like this. I really hope we get some in depth talk with the people in charge on what exactly went wrong.

Man this third episode is terrible. It moves so insanely fast, omitting a ton of narrative and it resolves nothing.

Example: she's stuck under rubble one moment, literally the next scene she's hiding under a bridge. This episode has at least 12 moments where something absolutely insane happens and then a hard cut to the next day or whatever and nobody reacts to anything. The most batshit crazy shit happened at that hospital and the next day they're just "thank you for taking care of me, byeeeeee".

The body horror and the grossness are incredible but man there is zero room to breathe. To let some things linger, to process what just happened.

What an awful way to do this. Animation is still dogshit as well. Not as bad as the previous episode but still super, super barebones.

Soundtrack doing a ton of heavy lifting, based Colin Stetson.

Final episode had awesome moments but everything is ruined by the terrible pacing and god awful animation.

A colossal waste, truly. This could've been an all-time classic.

That's disappointing to hear

Adult Swim was greedy I guess
It was likely not greed and the original company not realizing how much this was actually going to cost. The guy only made big budget rotoscoping movies before, you essentially have to make a live action stuff and draw over it, no way is that shit cheap and compound that this was done during COVID with busted working standards no way Adult Swim didn't know how bad it was

Adult Swim’s heart is in the right place and they have a good eye for picking interesting properties to produce, it’s just a shame their budget can’t match sometimes.

The corner cutting is what keeps them from being a real contender. Idk maybe they are aiming too high.

Anime original post credits scene by the episode 1 director. When he understand how to adapt and add original material... lmao what could have been.

At first I was willing to accept that the janky animation was part of an aesthetic they were intentionally going for...which I was willing to give a pass to somewhat... but it's clear it was all just budget related and that's super sad. I never read the manga but you can tell the pacing is all over the place on top of it.

The falling down the well jpegs is just outright embarrassing.

So I guess this is a skip?

Atmosphere is great, music is excellent, and it has some insane moments. But it’s bogged down by pacing issues and animation quality.

For me it was worth it because the bizarro Lovecraftian horror is my cup of tea.

Still, it’s only four episodes so you can sit through the entire thing in less than two hours.

It's a shame this turned out the way it did.

I was waiting for all the episodes to be released before I watched.

Now I will instead read the manga first.
