Kamiya: 'Staying at Platinum Would've Killed my Artistic Spirit, Making Games Isn't a Hobby or Charity'

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

If leaving was his best option, then I'm glad he did it.

Sounds like he's bringing a lot of top talent from Platinum to Clovers, too.

Very sad to see Platinum Games bleed but I'm also super happy to see Okami back in action with Kamiya at the helm..

Although I can't really say I see things changing much just because he created yet another studio, assuming they want to keep making the same type of games. Platinum Games churned out a lot of really good games during his time there, and they all sold relatively poorly.

But maybe he plans to pivot away from those types of action games/beat 'em' ups.

Leaves Clover Studio to form Platinum Games. Leaves Platinum Games to form Clover Studio. The circle is now complete and only then can Okami truly resurrect.

I get that it is a job that pays the bills and keeps food on the table, but why get into video game creation if you don't actually care about the people who enjoy your product? Being in entertainment may still be a job, but it's not the same as being a Telemarketer, or receptionist, flight attendant, etc.
I would love to what a Platinum game can do if given the kojima or naughty dog budget treatment along with people like Yoko Taro or other visionaries that don't get as much money as those others do.

What was his stated reason for leaving Capcom?
The trio left because clover was going to be absorbed into capcom proper again, so they founded seeds inc. which had the mission to "break away from a sequel driven industry, and create seeds that bloom into beautiful flowers"; so essentially the same reason of "killed my artistic spirit".

I wish Hideki Kamiya the best, its was sad to see him go from Platinum Games but its probably a good decision, and im sure he taught everything he knows about game design in his years there, so whatever project Platinum makes next i wish them the best as well

It's ironic that him, Inaba and Mikami leaving Clover was mostly because of capcom forced them to work on existing IPs, and they didn't want to make sequels. So he is now resurrecting this studio to work on a sequel he didn't want to 18 years ago, kinda logical, yeah.

Hopefully he can make what he wants but modern trends in game development are so far removed from what inspired things like Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe I just fear Okami 2 will be another stodgy cinematic walking game.

This whole guy's only schtick nowadays is to block people on Twitter.

Wow there's a block button and you can just block everyone. How edgy and cool.

Idk man he has more misses at this point than hits.

And I hope he's getting that gamepass money for okami 2 because it isn't going to sell gangbusters…

Considering Platinum games put out Astral Chain and he had very little actual input/work on the game I'd say Platinum is in good hands...unless of course he poached alot of the talent that helped develop AC.

Taura on Kamiya during the dev of Astral Chain - "during development when something didn't turn out to my absolute liking, I really started to panic. Kamiya really gave me his shoulder to lean on when that happened, but I don't think I've ever felt a sense of distress like that before."

Ok Phil…throw clovers a very large check to reboot scalebound, I know they still have those assets laying around, don't even have to start from scratch.

Well, what an idiot... Because on his Twitter I told him that Okami was an artistic work and he blocked me.

Maybe he have bipolar disorder.

Maybe he blocked you just for addressing him in English. It wouldn't be the first time he does that. Yes, Kamiya is a great game creator... and a jerk. 🤷🏻

What happens when the new Okami doesnt meet Capcom's sales goals?
Only MGR, Nier and Astral Chain met sales targets for platinum probably and they are still around. They can take contract work no problem, the issue was Platinum expading into publishing and finding external funds for what thye wanted to do instead of continuing to work with other companies.

I put this to the test and got a like from him. Had it translated to Japanese directly from English without any of those Japanese pleasantries as I have no knowledge about them except that they exist. So he's a kind fellow as long as you don't "force" English on him. Oh and I did mean what I said to him so it wasn't just a test.

I bet just messaging Kamiya on X telling him you're glad he's back with Capcom will get him to block your ass :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Still remember the day he shot my ass down. All I did was tell him how much I loved W101. It was heartbreaking :messenger_pensive:

Damn. Sounds like Hideki Kamiya poached a shit ton of heavy Talent from Platinum, including the Director of Astral Chain, Takahisa Taura.

"several veterans from Platinum have updated their social media accounts to remove all references to the company. This includes Metal Gear Rising's Kenji Saito, Astral Chain and NieR: Automata's Takahisa Taura, The Wonderful 101's Masaki Yamanaka and Bayonetta Origins director Abebe Tinari. Tinari's profile even says that he has left Japan and moved to Helsinki."

Tip to Kamiya: It's not always greener on the other side.

And it always looks bad bailing ship to go back to your old company, especially when the person didnt like working there to begin with.

Staying at a company he co founded and he could created whatever fuck he wants = kill his artistic spirit.

work on a sequel Okami for capcom = not ?

is he an idiot ?

My impression:

Continuing to work at platinum would have required him to add elements/features/systems to his products that he doesn't want to include = stifling his creative spirit/vision.
Not a labor of love = He isn't getting paid enough money to put up with the stuff he has to deal with at Platinum. Just because you own/start a company doesn't mean you instantly get a money hat...quite the opposite in many cases. Sometimes taking a paycheck is far more rewarding than generating your own wealth...those are two very different things.
