Kotaku: Sony's Concord might be the biggest entertainment failure of all time, so why wasn't it news?

It's not like it caused Sony to go out of business or anything major. It was a huge amount of money, sure, but it didn't make much of a dent plus they're gonna make that money back very quickly anyways.

Why would it be big news? Big companies are wasting more money than this all the time. Also they would have to mention the controversal character design and no western media is allowed to say something even slightly negative abour DEI.

It’s wince-inducing cringe, spoken as if from another dimension where video gaming wasn’t an international industry that dwarfs movies, television, publishing, a part of daily life for the last half of a century.

Not exactly true. Video games dwarf movies, TV and publishing in revenue generated, but this is only because video games are more expensive.

Far more people watch films/TV or read books than play video games. I understand Kotaku wanted this Concord story covered by major news outlets, but the truth is most of the world just wouldn't care. It's not news for the majority.
And we can officially close this topic. This is the answer to Kotaku's question. Fewer people play video games than enjoy movies, TV, books, and music. Furthermore, the news media is ultimately made up of profit seeking entities. If a story won't get any interest from their readership/viewership, it's not going to be reported on. Simple as. There's no conspiracy. There's no cover-up. Mainstream audiences just do not give a fuck.

I'm not clicking a Kotaku link so my response is based that the whole article is in the OP.

There is a comment that if "industry experts are to be believed" is their foundation that the game cost 400m then it is tales from the ass. If you were a journalist, you would try to make contact with multiple people involved in the studio in the hope they would comment on it, preferably on the record. You do not base a report on one person as one person can lie. If a few people are saying it then there appears to be something to report. There is no journalism here. Lads, it's Kotaku.

Kotaku is failing and want clicks from the same people who want to bathe in the failure of the game so they will latch onto anything. Those people believe a studio was fully staffed for 2 years before it was founded (like fucking how?) to justify the 400m costs. Think on that.

And finally, people are believing Kotaku, a website who have shown digital child porn on their website. Do better and don't give kiddy porn connoisseurs a click.

Very true. Also speaking for myself - I'm a gamer and I don't care either. I was like "OK, a game I've never heard about in a genre I don't play or care about lost a lot of money. How about that." And then I went about with my day and forgot about it.

Very likely because the $400M budget thing was just a click bait fake news lie and it wasn't the biggest entertainment failure of all time.

And well, gaming press doesn't talk more about the Concord failure because it's a case of "go woke go broke" and a good portion of the gaming press is woke and their ideology/religion forbids them to criticize anything woke because it would turn them into a target of the rest of the woke folks, who would cancel them calling them nazis, bigots, homophobes, racists, sexists, far right, etc. since self criticism, debate and deviation from their dogmas is forbidden taboo there.

Basically this translates as 'why doesn't our coverage merit us having jobs created at actual journalistic institutions.'

Why would any credible outlet cover games when the current media is surrounded by disingenuous and immature bloggers? We've all seen the Guardians attempts lately - and why is it so poor and obvious bait? Well the video games editor is one Keza McDonald. You may have heard that name before.....

Any and all shit like this that identifies a problem with what would seem an easy answer is always about gaining more influence. These people are parasites who want to convince the world they have talent and interesting things to say by manufacturing ways to attach themselves to credible IP or outlets.

The difference between Concord and some bomba movies is that Concord made zero bucks. The product was purged and refunded.

Movies like John Carter, and even Joker in due time will generate income from streaming, rental and disc sales. Waterworld was said to be eventually profitable.

Iirc from the Colins podcast, its not Sony that lost 400 million. The bulk of the money invested prior to Sony takeover was approaching 200 million already. He did some rough calculation/research legwork on why he believed his source and laid it out. No idea the timestamp but it was during the longwinded Concord segement.

Intentional blackout because it was an anti-woke victory for common sense and the controlled media won't let that stuff gain traction.
Also they are likely planning to resurrect this at some point. Naughty politicians know the routine well, keep them out of the news just long enough for people to forget, then bring them back with a PR spin story and viola.
GAF GOTY 2026 confirmed.

That ET game on the 2600 has got to be up there too. I think more people got burned by that POS than condord. At least with condord, they got their money back.

  • Joker 2 just came out and is going to digital in 2 weeks. Looks like it'll barely make its production budget of $200m back during its theatrical run.

Joker 2 cost $200 million to make, the gross of Joker 2 stands at $168 currently but that doesn't mean that the movie is getting close to breaking even.

Marketing movies also cost substantial money and cinemas take roughly half of the bo gross. If it also cost $50 million to market Joker 2, it would mean that Joker 2 would have to make $500 million to break even and the current loss is $332 million.

It used to be that physical disc sales and rentals would bring in substantial additional revenues but those markets have almost completely vaporized in the age of streaming. But WB will still be able to make additional money from selling digital copies on various streaming platforms, worldwide broadcast rights, their own streaming platform, showings on airplane flights, etc.

Most gaming journalists were, and many still are, in denial that Concord was rejected by gamers.
They can't accept that modern audiences do not exist. And that their extremist propaganda does not matter for the vast majority of people.

Because gaming is a niche activity. Its an activity that is looked down upon by people in power. So all those editors that finished top schools that did not play games in the 90s hired people from top schools that did not play videogames in the 2010s.

Gaming journalism is when you go if you fuck up in journalist school.

Because everyone with functioning braincells saw it coming, the genre is a fad (hero shooter) and the art style and character design were some of the most awful and unappealing things I have ever seen

It was only surprising for the devs, the retard era crew and the likes of people who think a robot needs a pronoun in its description 😂

Because to report on Concord's failure, they would need to report on the ACTUAL reasons why it failed, and that, my friend, is a no-no.

Anyway, the headline is hyperbolic. Even if Concord cost 400M, it hasn't sunk the company like other projects, and the CEO's head is still over his shoulders. If that were to happen in the near future, that financial bomb would return good results.

Because the market is full of failed gaas attempts, there is no news in the fact that with GaaS it's often a black or white story and publishers including Sony are fully prepared to such scenarios. Sony publicly stated they just wanted something to stick among their different attempts.
In Sony's case they had a huge success with Helldivers2 and a big flop with Concord, it's a good lesson for them, beind reminded of the risks of chasing trends but being late and forcing ugly characters and questionable art style it's not going to help.

Off topic, but while reading the article, I noticed there were a lot of advertisements. I mean, a lot. I usually browse with Firefox in “strict” mode so I don’t see them or even notice where they would normally be.

This article has 14 inline ad blocks. 14 large ads that you must scroll past to keep reading. If this isn’t indicative that the ad-based model of revenue is a failure, then what is?

It was not "estimated" to be 400m, it was *reportedly* 400m with suspect sourcing. Right or wrong, Colin Moriarty's commentary drew attention because 400m is way above most people's estimation.

If you believe Colin (i dont) then Concord has lost more than all of those so far, even at 250m its right up there.
Yes of course Colin is lying that he spoke to someone very in the know multiple times for hours who gave him that number after for weeks himself saying he thinks low 100 million is probably more likely when 250 was being reported all to risk his reputation and the most successful gaming podcast.

Believe what you want mate, i will.

Never said he was lying btw, he might just have duff information. Not getting into we've done it a thousand times already on this board.

Sorry i hurt your feelings.

So firstly, Colin was right!

Secondly, why do you leftist fucktards think that no one investigated why this woke game bombed HARD? I wonder if we can all figure out why???
Woke journalists and news outlets have zero interest in investigating why a woke crap game like Concord failed. It doesn’t fit their ‘agenda’.

Perhaps Sony had told them not to? Remember when PS3 and PSV contributed around $5 billion loss for Sony and yet media would rather talked about WiiU failures despite losing only ~$350 million.

Wii U almost sank Nintendo. Comparing it to PS3 is laughable. Wii U had further consequences for Nintendo, it's not about who lost more money.

They like " Hey you know that game that no one cared about ? Why isn't everyone talking about it failing? This should be big news guys!" 😂😂😂

There have been so many bitter flops the past years since covid that nobody bothers to keep track anymore. How many failed Star Wars and Marvel and DC movies haven't we had now? The same goes for gaming, with huge flops in the GAAS sphere happening by the month. Why should people bother to care? In the end, people have better things to do with their lives than obsess over this shit that only impacts some Sony execs who will probably just fail upwards anyways.

You are probably correct. It's a nothing story to the masses so why risk being cut off from future stories about Sony's films and musical acts which are much more usually covered by the old press, when it's not worth the risk?

The Wii U released in 2012 my man. PS3 losses were well documented by the media long before anyone even heard of Wii U.

This idea some have that Sony controls what the media reports is cute.

Flashless at the Golden Globes
1) its not the biggest bomb. Its a 6v6 arena shooter made by a of 100 devs that probably cost $50 million max.
2) its kotaku and the gaming media’s job to cover it. They didn’t because they didn’t want to cover a game that flopped because it went full woke. Mainstream media gets its cue from the gaming media.

Because Sony are the media's darlings. If Nintendo or especially MS had this happen to them it would be doom all over everywhere.
because gaming media are on Sony’s payroll, so they got instructions from Sony to forget about it

Seems the media, gaming and non-gaming alike, never got the check....

To them, the day Concord failed miserably to get gamer's money or attention was regarded as an awful flop. But to GaaS... it was Tuesday.
