Layoffs at SCEA

I'been thorugh a layoff and made it, everyone knew it was coming. Friday the day you pick up your paycheck they would call you out from the line and went into a special room. atleast 100 was fired. I somehow managed to stay on, as I watched some of my bosses and coworkers who IMO was better than me get the cut. very sad.

Gotta love how apparently no one in the Japanese offices (aside from higher ups) have been affected by any of this layoff nonsense when it's really the missteps and decisions at those offices that have lead to this.

I've been dropped from a long-term freelance arrangement - much less painful, but the way they did it sucked so much. The editor asked me to mail in my key to the building. I asked if I was getting a new one, and she said yes, very soon. I got the bad news a few days later from the receptionist. No new key, no more work, thanks for a few years of total subservience.

It's good that these folks at least don't seem to have been lied to.

It seems that Sony are lightly trimming the fat off their work force rather than cutting into bone and effecting their output/production. I feel bad for anyone being fired, but at least they are in a area heavy with similar opportunites for employment... I suppose. Silver linings and all that.

I think the moment Sony starts trimming people from active studios and actively shuttering deals they already have in place with second party studios (Factor 5 etc) then the alarm bells can be sounded. But now they I'm sure it's just a case of 'stream lining', or some other coporate double talk.

But I'm interested to see just how much influence Sony Korea will have in the furture. They seem to have been very quiet at the moment, probably handling some outsourced tech work. But in the future, could we see Sony start to ramp up the amount of outsourcing of their own first (and perhaps even second) party output to Korea?

Maybe a stretch seeing as how Sony Foster City (are 989 Studios even still open?) wasn't a major development studio, but maybe, with growing costs it might make sense.

Geez...Reminds me of Joe vs. The Volcano.

Is Sony trying to guilt trip us into buying a PlayStation 3?

I wouldn't put it past their PR department
I was made redundant once, took it pretty well- just stole a ton of stuff and put it on eBay.

Most of the mistakes in the Japanese offices where done by Kutaragi himself, for example "Let's do a bigger Cell because having 8 SPUs sounds better than having 6".

That truly sucks. They shouldve at least given them a 2 weeks notice out of consideration, not all people have jobs waiting for them when they come out of the house.

Blame Sony and putting BD in the PS3...

Tis the reason for all PS3 failing!

Blu-Ray has nothing to do with it silly. :lol

(EDIT: made my outburst a little more diplomatic :))
If find it sad that some people here use "I feel sad for those fired" as an excuse for flapping around their own personal agendas.
It's quite obvious that these people do not care about those who lost their jobs and yet they call your self gamers.
:S

SONY has been cutting staff in all divisions to increase profits and it's not just a SCE phenomena.

Living costs in the Bay Area are pretty high too... it's too bad.

They're absolutely insane, and Foster City is in the worst of it. At least Hayward, across the bridge, is less expensive than the peninsula FC sits on.

And this is why they usually want people out of the office asap with no chance to grab personal (and company) possessions unless supervised :P

Fact is that SONY has been cutting staff in all divisions to increase profits and it's not just a SCE phenomena.

Exactly. If you followed Sony (the actual company) you would very well know that theyve cutting jobs left and right since last year.

Its sad that some posters use this to push their agenda, but thats GAF for ya!

It's actually quite interesting to see how differently SCEE and SCEA handled this, perhaps SCEA went with experienced gained from SCEE or maybe it's just cultural difference.

'personal agenda' is a much better way of putting it than I did, more diplomatic. :)

Lots of developers went in Europe, mostly from Sony Liverpool.

I reckon we will see redundancies in Japan in the coming months, they did mention that they were restructuring worldwide, and that Europe was just the start.

Sony is in seriously deep shit.

You all know me as a fairly obvious Sony loyalist - and I still love my PS3. Damn thing's fun, even if the pickings are slim. My PSP goes everywhere I go. I love it. I say this because I don't want you to think this is fanboy rhetoric. I just want you to know what's going on.

Anyway, here's the situation...

PS3 hasn't been selling so hot. It's a fact that no one can reasonably contest. The system is sold at a monumental loss (several hundred dollars each, in fact) with the plan to make up the difference in software sales and royalties. Looking at the current situation (just go visit a Gamestop and check out the PS3 section), you can see the trouble with that in the short term.

Now one might say the long term plan is sound. Lose lots of money now, make it up later. Well there's another problem - many of the really huge 2007 titles are now 2008 titles. Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid, etc - and many of the killer-app exclusives (Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry) are no longer exclusives. You can say Sony planned for that too. The best titles for any system, after all, are the first party titles. God of War 2 is one of SCEs biggest successes... and while games like Ratchet and LAIR have their own online followings, they are nevertheless niche titles... not GTA/GoW/Halo level blockbusters. Even Uncharted, which is amazing btw, is slipping under the radar.

Ok, now that you know all that... how are the short term losses looking now? Well, they're bloody astronomical. The short term losses are far beyond what anyone expected. The predictions of this situation were felt a few months ago when the entire company was placed on a hiring freeze. That is, no new employees can be hired no matter the losses. This is a pretty standard thing in big business when it looks like FYE goals are going to come up short. It happens every few years - especially when new hardware is launched... so there wasn't too much cause for concern.

But today was a massacre. SCE has laid off an undisclosed number of employees world wide. It's been a trickle here and there, but today the axe came down - suddenly, and without any warning. You can be assured a press release will be inbound sometime tomorrow with the usual buzzwords "Downsizing", "Stronger position going forward", etc... but what this means for anyone following the so-called "Console Wars" is that Sony is in seriously deep financial shit. They're a major company, they can take it, and they may yet weather this... but this should come as a staggering blow to consumer confidence. Sony is trying to cut their losses - and should those losses continue - what else might they cut?

This will be my last post as an industry insider.

When will this **** stop! *Walks away from computer and sobs*

GAMERS.COM NEVAR FORGET.

(I was laid off from there back in 2001)

Anyway, this is bummer news indeed. Hope my buddy survived the cuts. I think he did since my friends list said he was playing Forza 2 earlier this evening. :lol
The ultimate way is to find out is to send an e-mail out to your friend and find out if you get 550'd. This was my way of keeping track of clients/contacts at my old job...

This way of firing off people seems weird, I don´t think in Europe people get fired like that at least is a bankrupt or something like that. Maybe as a individual, it happens, but not that way of taking groups and kicking you out of the office without previous advice.

Sorry to hear about it, best wishes to them.

"In an effort to accurately align the company to meet the changing needs of our consumers and of our industry, Sony Computer Entertainment America has found it necessary to analyze our current business and to restructure the company as necessary to continue our standing as the market leader," SCEA spokesman Dave Karraker told Kotaku this evening, when contacted for comment. " These restructuring efforts are currently underway and do include the streamlining of our operations and other initiatives to further strengthen the business, reduce costs and increase operational efficiency. "

If he has any amount of decency, he shouldn´t sleep well having said such soulless bullshit. One thing is defending the image of your company and other thing is trying to look as a robot without feelings or care about people who has worked for you.

Well, at least I could understand WHY the Sony prophet would be laid off...

He has always mixed insider knowledge with his own personal speculations which has been quite confusing at times;
ex. Oblivion for PS3 having higher res textures than the 360 version due to SONY giving the devs tools to take more advantage of Blu-Ray :)
He, Scrivener, should just have said that Oblivion for PS3 looked better but he had no clue why.

Now here in his goodbye post I yet again find my self in the same dilemma; what is personal speculation and what is hard fact.

If you work in the game industry, odds are you've been laid off at least once. One exception up until now had been at SCEA...
Actually there have been layoffs at SCEA before. One studio laid off nearly a third of it's staff just over five years ago.

Sony Japan's stupidity reminds me of the story of Commodore, as told so well in this book:-

Market leading product (C64/PS2), upgraded to a new machine that's ahead of it's time (Amiga/PS3), too expensive and marketed by morons.

I've been through this--I was terminated due to a corporate merger (MGM bought Mandalay Resort Group, where I worked). It sucks, yes, but it's not so terrible IF the severance is decent. I hope Sony did the right thing.

Um wrong - the Amiga was incredibly successful. Not to the same extent as the C-64, but still very popular.

Where Commodore took their eye off the ball was in the development of the CD32 console, instead of concentrating on pushing the Amiga forward to compete with the burgeoning PC market. It was obvious to everyone but management where resources should have been allocated, but those console dollars were too bloody tempting. By then it was too late.

The rampant piracy didn't help the Amiga market either, but that's another tangent.

Sad day indeed. Condolences to any Gaffer's affected by this.

If any Gaffer's affected by this would be interested in a position in the OC, send me a PM. I might be able to help.

wow that sucks. hope all those folks find decent jobs soon and hopefully get a nice vacation with the severance pay first.

I got laid off twice and it truly sucks. I've dodged a couple since then. There's usually a pattern so I now act quickly when I see hints that something bad is around the corner.

Condolences to all affected :(
