Logitech investigating feasibility of a subscription based 'forever' mouse (possibly keyboards too)

Hmm so how u avoid planed obsolescence is getting a onboard memory mouse or if people are making open software for it and hope they dont design internals to fail, other than switches. Bam forever. Hooked on this mx518 shape so hoping lgs doesnt stop working because of stupid windose feature updates, but guess it could still be usable with onboard.

I bought a Razer gaming keyboard that *requires* cloud login upon every reboot if you want the advertised programmable functions to work. Was the last product I will ever buy from them. Logitech needs to tread lightly with this crap.

So if you cancel your subscription the mouse stops working, or what? I don't really understand this. From just the headline I thought it might be that you pay a subscription to continuously get new mice when the last one goes bad, but doesn't seem like it?

Makes sense. I’m still using the Logitech mouse and keyboard I bought for my classroom computer 20 years ago and plan on using it until a I retire in 15 years. Logitech only got one purchase out of me instead of a monthly fee. Gotta keep the money coming in somehow.

I don't even mind paying for subscriptions where it makes sense - the software is constantly changing and being updated with new features and has useful cloud based functionality, or content is constantly being added - but a mouse has none of these.

This sounds like you are buying "lifetime" insurance for something that doesn't need it, like buying something in a game shop and they try forcing their "breakdown cover" on you for a fucking DS stylus.
And what if it breaks or needs repairs? Who is gonna wait weeks and weeks for it to come back? You kinda need a mouse on PC. Years ago I remember being able to rent consoles from a video store, which was grand. Making a mouse a subscription model? Did EA buy Logitech?

I paid £58 for my mouse on sale about 2 years ago and while the mouse is fine, I felt gross as fuck paying that nevermind $200. Hardware shouldn't be a subscription in this space, it's bad enough trying to feel comfortable having a digital library as we get fuck all protection on our purchases, nevermind having a mouse on lease ffs.

Any PC mouse gets all dirty and disgusting in like 5 - 10 years of prolonged daily use. Rubbing it with alcohol often makes things worse. Those people are well aware of this, so when they talk about "forever" they just mean they're going to suck you dry, and then you'll have to buy their new product anyway.

My MX Keys sucks compared to my K800 illuminated keyboard. The MX Keys backlighting keeps pulsing, and probably killing the battery.

Sell replacement parts for your mice and start with the mouse wheel because it's always the first thing to go.

There'll be a subscription on my toilet seat soon enough. Jesus, this recurring revenue push for every damn thing is getting tiresome.
Late stage capitalism is scary, especially when you know there are some nutjobs who actually think communism is a good alternative. We're heading for bad times, gonna get worse before it gets better.

Better to have a trade in model and refurb sale both to encourage return users and material recycle.

Like the phone market. But no need to release 20 phones every quarter.

Seriously screw tech companies. I'm going to unironically touch and lay in grass despite being allergic to it (I'm seriously allergic to types of grass) I'm glad I got more into drawing again. The future of AI and subscriptions on every facet of life is depressing. In moderation these things aren't too bad, but the tech companies aren't even hiding how greedy are being.

The future is going to be a perfect utopia:
- Electric Kettle Subscription
- Fridge subscription
- Oven subscription
- PC Mouse Subscription
..........

A Utopia for large multinationals.
Cars are already going that way.

A sub for remote start (even though your keyfob has the button)
A sub for heated seats (but your dashboard has the button)
A sub for premium sound (the subwoofer is there, just turned off)
etc etc

what a year dear god, fuck intel, fuck asus, fuck logitech, all these big names going on suicide runs lmao.

It really feels like collectively, the public is increasingly becoming fed up with the excesses and the ludicrous bullshit of corporations to nickle and dime the customer with questionably, scam-adjacent bullshit.

And I fucking love it.

As a fully grown adult, I don't blame capitalism with juvenile demands to have a weekly allowance for light chores from society at large. But I do sure as fuck blame infinite-growth corporatism with their constant vulture pecking and their deaf, dumb, and blind initiatives.

Let the masses turn on these fucks.

I don’t think it’s going to be a 2030 conspiracy that turns the world like this but the big businesses.

If they can make it that we pay to buy then Pay to continue to use something they will damn well sure try and do it.

I can see this coming a mile off
You can opt out but I bet the FOMO will be a big big selling point, that an enforced obsolescence of older products.
What exactly do you think the WEF is? It isn’t a conspiracy theory, it is their plan. More or less every large corp and government wants to turn the world essentially into a Black Mirror episode. And they aren’t even hiding it.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
I hope there is a subscription tier supported by ads so your mouse moves on its own to draw pics in MS Paint of stuff to buy.

EDIT: Their / THERE - bastard iPad autocorrect.

May I have a cookie?
Currently using a Logitech M-S48A ball mouse from 1998.
It's older than a lot of Gaffers.
Works perfectly.

I expect it to last the rest of my lifetime.
With a PS/2 to USB adapter? Nice! My issue with ball mice is the dust that gets inside.

Get this. Slightly related.

Toyota has a patent that will let them charge you a monthly fee to keep using your keyfob after your car reaches 10 years old.

Luxury carmakers have patents that will let them turn on or off your heated/cooled seats and certain other luxury features if you don’t pay a subscription fee.

None of these are in use yet, but the patents exist.

Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber recently discussed the possibility of one day selling a mouse that customers can use "forever." The executive said such a mouse isn't "necessarily super far away" and will rely on software updates, likely delivered through a subscription model.

Faber, who Logitech appointed as CEO in October, said that members of a "Logitech innovation center" showed her "a forever mouse" and compared it to a nice but not "super expensive" watch. She said:

Speaking with Faber, Decoder host and Verge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel suggested that a "forever mouse" could cost $200. While that would be expensive compared to the typical mouse, such a product wouldn't be the first software-heavy, three-figure-price computer mouse. Still, a price tag of around $200 would limit the audience to professionals or enthusiasts.

To be clear, Logitech hasn't announced concrete plans to release such a product. But Faber seemed optimistic about the idea of a mouse that people never need to replace.

The fact that they're even entertaining the idea is laughable.

If it's made out of the highest quality parts, and designed with superb engineering, and comes with a lifetime warranty, I can see paying $200+ for a mouse and keyboard. But fuck subscriptions.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
This wasn't the reason I moved away from Logitech for any sort of PC peripherals, but I guess it tells me I was right to do so.

Like some of software, you buy hardware, then to use it well and have some features activated, you will need to login, subs to factory, then getting it worked. The worst case is if hardware wont work if you havent pay the subs...

Many people knew about where this lead. Capitalist is the worst for somrthing like this

Will this be some type of collaborative Tier with GamePass?

You know, for those RTS' and RPG's that don't play well with a controller? /s
