LTTP: Ace Combat 7, and put Ace Combat 8 directly into my veins now

^This, this right here, made half the game. When it all comes together, the firing of AA missiles, the warning systems, the cracking of a gun, the voice acting* and right at the right moment the OST compels you on to be ever sharper, quicker, more daring, the game creates a series of amazing euphoric moments

*My main con here is I could never get the audio mix right, by default I found it hard to hear the intercom, if I kept the voice volume up and turned music and effects way down it got better in-game but then the cutscene audio was very quiet, i guess it was classified as music or something but there was no way to mix it perfectly.

Another annoyance was the save system, some mission failures for objectives that weren't at first clear or on a timer had the last auto save be annoyingly far back.

I got over it though. The story about space elevators and such is a bit silly but it's enough to create those super compelling emotional moments when everything ties together. This is an older, PS4 game I bought years ago and only just finished on PS5, but I'm still super hyped about it, even with no Dualsense use, no Tempest Audio, no 4K, no HDR, nothing but 8th gen, yet I've come out of it loving my first game I've played in the series and I cannot WAIT for Ace Combat 8 made in UE5 native for the PS5 generation and all its features, it should be very good!

I fucking love this game, I was so surprised how much of it came together to make a game I loved in almost all ways, it's not perfect but just leaves room for improvement with AC8, I played AC7 in 2020 and I've been waiting for the sequel announcement since I put it down.

The voice acting, music and graphics combined with the simple but addictive gameplay is such a beautiful combo. The story was silly but I really enjoyed it in a mid-tier anime way because the cinematography of the CGI shots was so well done, its better than 90% of other games so it elevated it in that way.

Haven't played a game like that since Airforce Delta on the Dreamcast. AC7 is basically a brainless arcade style flight sim, yes?

It's more arcade style than a hardcore combat flight simulator like DCS, I wouldn't say brainless, there's a fair learning curve and technicals to it if you're new to the series which I was but not that bad

In a perfect world, all games would be like Ace Combat. 8-10 hours of pure bliss that you want to replay over and over again because those highs are so insanely intoxicating. A true quality over quantity affair where the developer passion for the series keeps showing itself in every corner. This is one of my most beloved games ever. OP if you want more, I highly recommend the DLC missions and also Ace Combat 4-5-Zero.

I wanted to like it, but I just completely fail at these games. I just end up doing loops around searching for my enemies that are also doing loops around me and we never really find each other.

There's a slight learning curve as I mentioned, but it's not too bad, this was my first one. There's high G turns combining both triggers, and I was usually feathering the brake and thrust for sharper turns without getting to stalling speed. Or sometimes you just have to dash away from a fight and make some distance before you engage because the missiles have turning limits as well.

I'm probably giving it another go at some point, maybe I'll find an online tutorial about not sucking at it.

Would rather have a modern remake of the japanese version of Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere, that thing was in essence a Ace Combat and Future/Mech Anime mash up and it was glorious, shame what they did with the international version though.

It was worth the $6 I paid for it. Parts of it were more frustrating than I was expecting.

There were a few frustrating moments I had to try a few times but I mostly just git gud'ed

A few missions in I realized you really have to pay attention to the briefings that include weather reports even, to guide your selections on missile types and so on. There were a few annoying parts on a very short timer but really not many, not enough to blunt the effect and maybe just enough to hit those points of euphoria.

Glad you liked it OP, it was definitely one of my favorite games of 2019 and I replayed it again for the 3rd time a few months ago.

Didn't mean that in the way it came across, for arcade style games I often refer to them as brainless or mindless switch your brain off games. I was merely enquiring if this was a simplified flight game or more complex flight sim. Same as racers, Forza Motorsport (sim, no thanks) or Ridge Racer (brainless arcade, yes please).

You're not wrong. My desire to git gud has diminished as I have become more ancient, but I persevered with a lot of this one because it did get some adrenaline pumping.

It wasn't an older PS4 game, AC7 came out in early 2019. Its actually baffling Namco didn't do a PS5 remaster in 2020 or so.

Absolutely great game, it looked like a PS2 game in terms of interface and challenge. AC7 might be the most difficult game of them all, even. It was a throwback to the old school AC games. I did feel it kind of went overboard with drones though. The game sold remarkably well, with over 5 million copies. The most succesful game in the franchise by far.

I played the shit out of Ace Combat 2 back in the day. I even got the dual analog controller just for that game (that was before DualShock).

IDK why the hell I haven’t played the others. Might have to start this one tonight!

One of the best games from 8th gen. I bought it on a whim and I was surprised how much I loved it. I cannot wait for AC8 now. I’m glad it seemed to hit for you the same way.

The controls and combat itself were stellar, but the IFF mechanic really soured me on the game since it was such a large part of the game, which ruined the fights. They also could have modernized the mission structure more, which is my main complaint about the older games (more forgivable at the time of their releases). If they iterate well with 8 and at least try to tell a coherent story, it will be awesome. I would love a modern take on the anime style AC4.

With all that said, Daredevil is the best song in the series' soundtrack, except Zero. I can't believe the song almost didn't make it into the game, but am thankful they waited for it to ship.

I still remember that Mission in AC7 where you have to shoot down the missile exiting the atmosphere while trying to make the ACES appear AND shoot them down with the timer ticking...I just don't have the time nor the will to restart checkpoints 1000 times nowadays, it's just hard for being hard and repetitive.

Other than that, it's one of the best games i've played during the XONE/PS4 generation , looked really nice, controls were tight as ever and the music...oh my God the music, brilliant as ever, every track is a certified banger.

8.5/10 for me

It was my first Ace Combat and I had a blast with it. The gameplay, the music, the visuals...it all comes together beautifully
Can't wait for 8 whenever it finally gets announced!

This exact part when the enemy shields go down and the music really kicks in, while being fully immersed in the game with headphones blasting on full volume, is one of the few moments last gen that gave me chills:

I can agree with that, a few mission structures were frustrating and there's only the way the developer wanted you to do something. Sometimes the instructions were unclear or there was just a very short timer and those were a little frustrating.

Overall it didn't blunt the impact of those high moments when it all came together though. Room for improvement in a jaw dropping 8 after a 5+ year hiatus, I hope.

I am also LTTP and just picked this up because of this thread.

This game is sick. The opening cinematic was 🔥. The blue skies gives me classic Sega vibes, and I think I'm getting the hang of the dog-fighting. Fun stuff.

The closest game I've played to this might be the Starfox 64 "all range mode" sections.

I'm using the "Maverick" planes that came with the special edition on Steam. Am I cheating myself out of some progression? Because they seem to have way better stats than the default starter planes.

I don't think there was too much progression through the main campaign, you can enjoy the skins. It's probably not going to be easy if this is your first one like it was for me.

Why would you be sad that Tom Cruise has higher stats than the default planes?
