LTTP: Ace Combat 7, and put Ace Combat 8 directly into my veins now

I don't like the genre much, but it was okay, I guess. Some bits feel actually good (kinda like GT, car pron, and Ride, bike pron, in some way), others feel cheap und un(der)developed (bs story).
VR-mode could have been a massive hit, if it had been done for the entire game and not just some basic separate missions. (PC mods seem to have done it for everything. woo!) My main problem with the genre, that I usually fly 95+% off the time looking at the radar to know where the enemy is and shoot at them when apearing for a moment in your actual sight. In VR I suddenly could follow any target and not move like a dumbass around and around and around...

Is Frontline 59 the one to get on PSN? Is that the original campaign as well, and VR is only optional and not required right?

Why 2.66 stars?

Didn't realise there was a ps5 update for it.

Not sure about the rating though. Can only speak from my own experience but I really like the game. AC is a better game for sure but Wingman holds its own.

Hell yeah. I do need a game to tide me over! I'll probably get it.

The PSVR missions look so good, there's so much potential for fighter sims in VR.

Clearing my backlog and stuck on mission 15. This is probably the best Ace Combat game and i've played the whole series. If you're a fan of this series check out Project Wingman, it's practically the same game but with less story sequences.

I got it as part of a bundle with PSVR1 back in the day. So the VR mode though small made me own and play it. Hope AC8 has VR support too.

It would be cool if every mission optionally supported VR in 8. From what I saw of Project Wingman's VR missions, VR can be a real game changer for fighter sims. Looking around at other jets was a bit difficult with standard controls, but in VR you can just look around, that would be much more immersive.

Oh yeah. It's good. Did the first 3 missions last night. Don't think I'll use the DLC jets for a while. I like the upgrade tree. Muscle memory kicked right back in. Crazy how that goes. I bought a SNES and F-ZERO a while back and the first time I played it: right back to the early 90s like I never left. I was drifting around like a pro. Same experience in this game. Once I got the buttons it was off to the races. Drones didn't stand a chance. I do like the LT+RT quick turn thing. That's really nice.

Holy shit this is going directly into my veins.

In VR it's MUCH easier to track targets when looping and coming back around for another run.

I would love someday if they did an Ace Combat Remastered Collection, bundle like the first 4 or so games together. As long as Shattered Skies is included I’d definitely bite.

I'm really liking this game.

The story is interesting, but could be delivered better. "Trigger" just got pardoned in a between-mission line of briefing dialogue. Could've had way more emotional impact if presented in an actual cutscene or even a third-person walk-around-the-base-on-foot interstitial.

I really like this retrospective, it's long

Would rather have a modern remake of the japanese version of Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere, that thing was in essence a Ace Combat and Future/Mech Anime mash up and it was glorious, shame what they did with the international version though.
Timeline wise, we're getting there

I'm a huge Ace Combat fan, and I have to say 7 was a big disappointment. The controls and combat itself were stellar, but the IFF mechanic really soured me on the game since it was such a large part of the game, which ruined the fights. They also could have modernized the mission structure more, which is my main complaint about the older games (more forgivable at the time of their releases). If they iterate well with 8 and at least try to tell a coherent story, it will be awesome. I would love a modern take on the anime style AC4.

With all that said, Daredevil is the best song in the series' soundtrack, except Zero. I can't believe the song almost didn't make it into the game, but am thankful they waited for it to ship.

AC7 is a return to form after the failure of Ace Combat Assault Horizon. Maybe the next game is gonna be better. All the current trope of Ace Combat are from AC2.

The main characters of AC are never shown in-game (except Assault Horizon). Personally, I think they tried too hard for the story. They tried mixing the style of 4 (focusing on the enemy ace) with 5 (focusing on the MC squadron).

"Not to capture the reality of aerial combat, but to understand the fantasy of it"

Yup, perfectly put.

Is there a good story summary of all entries before 7?

One of the worst and most boring games i have ever played.
This was my first Ace Combat game and probably the last, i heard for so long about this series and i was pretty excited to try it.
Just after few missions i started to get frustrated at how boring and repetitive the game felt, all i did was fly this plane and shot some dots that appear on screen, i figured that next mission may be different but no i eventually had the same things and the story is stupid, I don't understand why they didn't just use the real world instead of a fake one, nothing is fleshed out and the storytelling was terrible i didn't care for anything happening.
I didn't even finish the game lol, after many missions i lost hope that its going to get good and i uninstalled it, wasted some money but now i know to avoid this series, can't believe it gets praise, this is about as barebones as it gets, maybe i should've tried another entry to the series but i watched some on Youtube and they look similar, i guess its not for me, but i also fail to see what makes it good.

Not every game works for everyone, it's fine. I was a little frustrated at the start but the effect was really working by the end.

Red dots appearing on screen and shooting them is going to be a hallmark of any combat sim lol, simulating radar lock and long range missiles. These ones are actually shorter range than realistic, on DCS you can lock things well before seeing them.

I’m guessing you don’t like any flight games then lol. When you’re target is 1,000 meters away from you it’s going to look small hahahaahahaha

Also not sure what you were expecting, can you expand on that?

I liked flying planes in GTA V, but yeah it was the first flying ace fighter game i played, its arcadey.
I expected it to be good but i found it not good, don't know what to expand on, i just found the game repetitive and boring after few hours, its gameplay didn't interest me anymore, i didn't care for the story because of these fictional places that try to look as real as the real world and the missions were too similar, but i mean maybe thats how these games have always been, i guess i just don't get how can people find them good, i understand the formula they are going for here, but based on its ratings and reputation i expected something way better.

Ace Combat Assault Horizon may be more your alley. The setting is real world and there's helicopter mission and AC-130 mission.

I'm liking this game even more than I did in the beginning. I'm on Mission 16 of (I think) 20.

As a newcomer, I feel like this game is like listening to a new genre of music, and, initially, the songs all sound the same. But as time goes on, you start recognizing and possibly appreciating the nuances.

The missions seemed same-y at first, but there's variety there if you look for it (stealth missions, needing to visually distinguish allies/enemies before attacking, ace encounters, escort missions, battles where the weather limits your visibility).

All on top of a gameplay loop that feels great. Almost like Tony Hawk flow-state stuff.

I'm glad to have some more Ace Combat style new missions to play in this. There was a slightly different learning curve and I turned on auto levelling to be more similar to Ace Combat after drifting into the ocean a few times lol. I do actually quite miss the mechanic of high G turns.

The audio chatter sounds a bit like someone got a few of their friends to do it in a basement lol, I guess it's a bit charming. Sometimes it' doesn't match what's going on on the screen like someone will say they're losing oil when they already blew up a minute ago, but it's impressive for a fan effort. AC is AC for a reason I guess!
