LTTP: Bowser's Inside Story

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
With all the hubbub of Q4 releases and tons of news swirling around regarding Wii U, I thought it would be nice to go back to a game I never got a chance to play rather than buying new junk.

Being that Super Mario RPG was the first RPG I ever played, followed by Earth Bound, I have a soft spot for RPGs with a sense of humor, but they are few and far between. This game has that feeling in spades, to the point that after mostly playing "super-challenging" games lately like Spelunky, XCOM, and Super Meat Boy, it was refreshing to play something more low-key and story focused.

Pros:

+Being able to punch, jump, and interact with the environment in various ways. I really wish more RPGs would explore this sort of thing.
+Writing that is often funny, and otherwise very competent. Refreshing for the genre.
+Battles that are uniquely interesting and very direct. The bosses especially are great fun so far.
+Intuitive switching between bowser and the mario bros. This is really hard to explain, but this part is really enjoyable and a fabulous pacing device.
+Streamlined RPG elements where it counts. In my old age, I've lost my appetite for grinding and other time-wasting mechanics. So far, this game never feels grindy.
+Graphics - they seem basic at first glance but the animations have a ton of charm. I am jealous of whoever got to do these for a living :)

With everything being so action-oriented and streamlined in just the right places, it almost feels like an evolution of the genre to something more fresh and modern. It's funny, but to me Nintendo has made one of the most progressive games in the genre.

Cons:

+Constant intrusive dialog from the star dude.
+Way-too frequent tutorials. Its way to easy to mistakenly accept them when you don't intend to, because you are clicking through the annoying dialog from the star dude.

Overall this is a fantastic game and I recommend it just as heartily as any new release I've played this year, the only downside is that this hasn't reached budget-territory simply because it's a Nintendo release.

It's been my first mario RPG and i liked it a lot. Nor particularly difficult, but a lot of fun. Especially the bosses

Enjoy it, for this game is awesome! Can't wait for Alphadream's next Mario RPG, though I know I'll be enjoying Sticker Star too!

always enjoyed these more than the paper mario ones (still fantastic).

hopefully paper mario on 3ds does not mean this series is finished.

This is the only Mario & Luigi I have not beat :/ Loved the first two to death!
edit: I got stuck playing as Bowswer about 13-15 hours in..

Best mario rpg ever.

YEAH, IT'S BETTER THAN TTYD.

In terms of pacing, I agree. TTYD had great aesthetics, but there were too many valleys of boredom between interesting parts. Bowser's Inside Story is like... How to Pace an RPG: The Game.

On this subject, which other mario rpgs you suggest? Should i wait for sticker star or there some i absolutely have to play?

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is great.

Paper Mario Thousand Year Door is incredible as well.

Super Mario RPG is fantastic.

Quite a few to choose from.

I've not played that one. Rebought a DS so will play it soon.

Edit: They're genuinely some of the funniest games I've had the pleasure of playing.

I thought it was a great game and agree with your points. However, I didn't care for the gimmicky use of the microphone and the game was pretty easy outside a few boss battles. In addition, the "Inside" sections weren't as fun as I thought they'd be and the music was mostly forgettable. Also, I wish the game were tad bit longer, but at least that made it easy to get back into doing another play through. I love the little clever things like knocking out an alligator's teeth during combat so it won't be able to use that attack anymore. Another example is in the animations like when Mario or Luigi get knocked out and the other brother leaps in to assist him.

Brilliant, BRILLIANT game. My favourite of the Mario and Luigi series for sure and one of the best games on DS.

I think it's the very best Mario RPG, personally. My top three would be it, then Thousand Year Door, then the original M&L.

I do hope that another M&L will pop up on the 3DS in addition to Paper Mario.

You can't go wrong with any of them. Super Paper Mario and Partners in time are considered to be the "low points" in the series, and those are still great games.

The Thousand Year Door is considered the "best" and I can't really argue with that, it still holds up great even today, and it's easy enough to play on Wii with the BC. Superstar Saga is were Fawful got his glorious start and has one of my favorite boss themes ever. And I think the N64 one is on the Wii store for 10 bucks.

Best:
Superstar Saga
Thousand-Year Door
Bowser's Inside Story

Okay:
Paper Mario
Super Paper Mario

Not great:
Super Mario RPG
Partners in Time

Final Boss Music in this game is amazing. I don't know where I'd rank this with other Mario RPGs, I just know it's better than Super Mario RPG. I'll never understand the love for that game when Thousand Year Door and Superstar Saga exists.

Game of whichever year it came out. Bowser was an amazing protagonist. Might not be as good as TTYD, but I also haven't replayed it yet.

Don't listen to the haters. It's really, really good. My only complaint with the game is the cheap overkill for a final boss. And the bros. moves are my favorites. I wish I still had my copy.

This is like the only part that I thought was good... well, bad... but intentionally. It made me laugh anyway. I figured they were just making fun of stereotypical JRPG last boss battles.

Of the Mario and Luigi games, I only played the first one, and it felt much too action-y to me, I prefer the more RPG-focused style of Mario RPG and the Paper Mario games. I keep hearing how amazing this one is though, but, is it more on the RPG side of things, or still rather action-y?

I tried to go back after playing 16+ hours and had no idea where I was.

Have to start over again cause god damn did I love what I played so far.

I have played it just recently and finished the main story without too much grinding.

It's much easier han Brothers in time, yet way more fun to play overall; the level design is awesome, and the gameplay is more diversified, speaking of which the Giant Bowser boss fights remind me of Mystical ninja for N64.
As for the writing the story is full of very funny comical moments, Bowser has much potential indeed and I hope he'll come back again as a main character in the future.

I've not played super paper mario, will be sure to pick them up in the near future.

Thousand year door has some of my favourite gaming music ever.

This one is much easier than BIT, boss battles are nowhere near as tough.
To be more specific, Mario&Luigi/Bowser's special attacks are much easier and effective than the ones in Brothers in time, and it's also much easier to dodge enemies' attacks, so that makes it way more enjoyable imo.

Howl's Moving Castle the game. Think about it.
And RPG battles in which the baddies employ mix-ups = BEST RPG baddies.

No one should take your opinion to have any weight ever again.

I know it's coming whenever I say it but I feel I can justify my opinions.

A: It doesn't feel like a Mario game. The Toad village and such envoke feelings of fantasy RPGs, not Mario, and all of the non-Mario characters don't fit the universe and are poorly designed imo. The whole ending is especially very non-Mario.

B: The isometric platforming is awful.

C: It's really ugly

D: The battle system is actually really damn good. This is the one positive I'll give it.

Did this game just get a really limited release in Australia or something? Never been able to find it, so it's the only Mario RPG I haven't played.

I don't know if my expectations were too high after reading reviews and impressions, but this is actually my least favorite Mario RPG. I thought the whole part of the game where you play as Mario and Luigi inside Bowser was boring, visually and in terms of challenge.

Great game. The Mario and Luigi RPG games have some of my favourite battle systems. I was really apprehensive about playing as Bowser but his segments on the whole were more engaging and varied than Mario and Luigi's.

I'll give you B and C. The platforming is pretty blah, and the graphics do not hold up, much like all 3D from that period.

I think at that time it was exactly what I imagined the kingdom would be like though, it's only SINCE then that they've gone in another direction.

Even the worst Mario and Luigi game is better than SMRPG, which is still in itself a damn good game.

Play them all.

Yeah, part of this might be because I didn't play the game unti the GameCube era. It was still the first Mario RPG I played (I actually marathoned SMRPG through TTYD all in a row), but I didn't play it when it first came out.

I suppose that could make a world of difference. At the time, the Mushroom Kingdom hadn't been all that developed, and though not totally in line with what we had, it didn't feel that out of place.

So good. Damnit.
