LTTP: Episode IX - what a pile of shit

He should have gotten the entire sequel. At least, it would have been a decent story. Each one felt an entire universe itself combined in to one.

Exactly. I wasn't even one of the "Disney owning Star Wars is bad by default," people initially (has since changed, lmao), but just from a writing, cohesiveness, continuity, borderline autistic OCD attention to detail front - the sequel trilogy is a hot mess. Forget worrying about Disney Star Wars fitting into Lucas Star Wars in a believable way, Disney can't even get Disney Star Wars to fit into ITSELF in a believable way.

7 - 8 - 9 all together feels vaguely similar to something like the original Devil May Cry PS2 trilogy. A middle chapter with such starkly contrasting styles and character takes from primarily the same people that it murders the pace of everything until part 3 where the studio was like "holy shit, we need money, put an Asian girl With big boobies and a rocket Launcher in there and make him fight demons on a motorcycle with a pizza in his hands!"

Earnest part 1.
Rabies fever dream wtf part 2.
Ohfuckbutton smashed fanservice part 3.

Only difference is DMC3 was awesome.

But yeah, you can't take the captain of a man of war and switch him out for a helicopter pilot for the middle of the journey and expect the docking to be pleasant.

Its their own fault. They knew what R Johnson was going to do with Episode 8 to completely fuck up any sort of momentum they had with Episode 7, which to me, i found 7 was good and attempted to set some direction for the next 2 movies. Mark Hamil today being an utter piece of shit aside, RJ did the character dirty for 8, and killed so much of what the last 2 films could've been.

They are for kids. you guys are pushing 40. you have kids of your own and you are discussing these made for kids movies like they are the godfather sequels.

Lets face it. you all have aged out.
Then where are the new Star Wars fans? Not counting the mentally challenged and media outlets simping for the Disney money no one liked it. Toy sales tanked. Poor Solo movie tsnked (which i heard was ok). The Acolyte bombed so hard they cancelled it.

The new kids don't want to watch Star Wars and the old ones started letting it go. Hell, even after a good start with the Mandalorian they had to meddle and we got the crappy season 3.
Only thing that i still want to watch (and literally pray they won't somehow try to fuck it up) is season 2 of Andor.

No brand lives forever. kids nowadays play fortnite, minecraft and roblox. Not the games we grew up playing in the 90s. they are not into star wars because its not hip or cool. they watch other trash their friends are watching. inside out 2 just made a billion and a half dollars and its not a movie you and i would ever even think about watching. different generations have different taste. rise of skywalker made over a billion dollars after the "worst fucking" sequel of all time came out. so clearly not everyone thought the trilogy sucked and im sure plenty of kids saw it as well.

Yeah, I agree with all of that entirely. It was a house of extremely well positioned cards, on a time limit (OT actors were/are getting older or have passed) and they completely bellyflopped on top of it. Harrison Ford has likely washed his hands of the franchise forever, Hamil is indeed an exclusionary jackass, and Carrie Fisher has passed away. That was the moment for lightning in a bottle and instead they took turns farting in the bottle and huffing it. We will never have the opportunity to see the original OT characters together again for a last hurrah and the fucking magical kingdom of Disney is the one responsible for pissing all over a dream scenario.

I don't think there's anyone who hasn't imagined Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, 3P0 and R2 in their older age, wandering a dimly lit corridor with their blasters out, quipping about the OT events and whatever else. We all expected it, too. Glad we have Rian, the Subversion Mage. Johnson the Jackass.

Fuck. I'm not even a super fan, I watched the Skywalker Saga movies, 4-6 growing up, 1-3 in my teen years, and 7-9 in real time, and I've played Shadows of the Empire on the N64. Despite that, I still get totally pissed off when I talk about this, lmao.

Uh yeah I didn't watch this movie for forever either. My sister asked about watching it, but I insisted I didn't want to put myself through it. I felt like the tables had fully turned where the person I grew up arguing with for control of the TV to watch stuff like Star Wars, was nagging me to watch Star Wars. Finally we were stuck alone for a few hours and she brought it up again...so I watched it on Disney+ with small TV. The next day after she apparently processed everything that happened, she looked at me and said

"Yeah you were right. That was pretty fucking horrible."

Now that being said. As little interest as I had in seeing it because I was sure it was bad, I was still shocked at how bad it actually was. I actually had disbelief at the final scene with Palpatine. I walked in knowing it wouldn't be ROTJ ending mkII but I guess I was expecting more than the final encounter to be like a game cutscene and that's it.

Rian Johnson is probably the reason why I no longer give a shit about Star Wars the way I use to. Episode 8 had the worst writing in the entire franchise, let me remind you of one of the most cringe worthy forced narrative arcs concocted in Rians mind:

xyWlCdb.gif

TF is this shit? lmao.

I never would have thought of or remembered this ever again but thanks for keeping me sharp on Star Wars lore, appreciate it man :messenger_neutral:

In 20 years time, when the sequel sequel trilogy is released, will we look back fondly on this trilogy like we do with the prequels? No.

This movie was a train wreck of various producers panicking and trying to fix Rian Johnson's colossal shit burger of a movie in real time. Why in Christ's name they ever let The Last Jedi go to theaters without massive reshoots is one of the most baffling decisions in all of Hollywood's history. That movie was absolute garbage from the very first minutes.

Space bombers? An entire Star Wars movie that was basically a slow motion space race? One of the greatest heroes of cinematic history given the tired old hermit treatment - and not even a good version of it at that?

Fuck I hate that movie.

Nah. Something doesn't last because something worse came later. It lasts because there was something impactful about it. The ST has nothing to work with as a hook, no matter how bad the next one is.

I liked the last jedi more than this. but it wasnt bad for a popcorn flick. You guys need to listen to what George Lucas said about these movies. They are for kids. you guys are pushing 40. you have kids of your own and you are discussing these made for kids movies like they are the godfather sequels.

Lets face it. you all have aged out. No one plays platformers anymore or 2d action shooters like contra that used to dominate in the early 90s. Our tastes have changed. Star Wars can never be a serious story like game of thrones or breaking bad. its always been a popcorn flick. trying to analyze plot points, mary sue character traits, character motivations in a summer blockbuster is super weird. i loved fast and fast furious, the mummy, con air, face/off, jurrassic park growing up. i never once cared about mary sue-ness of any of the leads. i have aged out of all those kind of movies. i cant remember the last FF movie i watched, or bad boys or jurrassic park movies.

Are the visuals cool? yes. are the action scenes well shot? yes. is there a big battle at the end? yes. just like that its a 7/10. even if the ending feels hollow, who cares, i got my money's worth. Rian directed the shit out of TLJ and even if the ending sucked, it was fun and less contrived than JJ's equally stunning but ultimately hollow movie because it tried to appease to grown ass adults who didnt like some plot points. well, this is what you get. they did a complete 180 and you all hated it anyway. maybe they shouldve continued Rian's story arc and it might have made a bit more sense.

if you guys want real stories then watch dramas with real character motivations, plot twists and good storytelling. Real movies that go straight to streaming nowadays because no one went to watch them in movie theaters.
It’s bullshit to try and make a new entry to a beloved IP, fail at it, then be like “oh well it was always supposed to be for kids anyway”.

Star Wars is like like the classic Disney movies. They’re for all ages. They work on multiple levels. They stick with you. If you want to just watch it as an entertaining popcorn flick, you can. If you want to analyze it at deeper levels, you can. It’s filled with tropes and archetypes that go all the way back to the earliest stories we know of.

They’ve made something that superficially is kind of like the old Star Wars but stripped out anything deeper and replaced it with postmodernism, nihilism, irony, intersectionality, etc. It just doesn’t work. Yeah maybe you can switch your brain off and be entertained for a bit, but it rings hollow.

Just like the new Snow White. Now she’s a strong independent girlboss who doesn’t get saved by the prince, with diverse queer “dwarves” who aren’t dwarves. Are you going to tell people “well fuck you, what do you care? Fairy tales are for kids, you need to grow up”

You forgot the part where Leia mysteriously resurrects in the vacuum of deep space and suddenly gains Force powers out of nowhere and floats herself back to the ship

Also the entire gambling planet subplot that had no point whatsoever

Also the stupid ending which was one of the stupidest endings ever where he thought he could just end it like The Empire Strikes Back and no one would notice

In terms of being "Franchise Murderers" I think Rian Johnson might be the greatest one of all time

I'll never forget the hordes of Internet TLJ Defenders who thought it was the greatest movie of all time because Disney told them it was

The Last Jedi was The Last SW Movie i saw.

It destroyed my love for Star Wars. Never felt the need to see episode IX. Not even for closure.
And you could call me a big SW fan.
I was a huge star wars fan as a child I saw ESB and Return of the Jedi at the movies. I had the figures, the milenium falcon etc alll it took for me was that uninspired shitty soft reboot that was TFA for me to nope out. I didn't even subject myself to the other 2 shitquels.

I disagree. I look back at movies I grew up watching and I dont think I can analyze them like i can the Godfather, Kubrick's movies, Terrance Malik movies, Scorsese movies, or classics like Deer Hunter, Blade Runner etc that came out around the same time summer blockbusters started creating their own genre. It would be an insult to compare Jaws, star wars, Indiana Jones, back to the future to kubrick's works. And I love those movies.

But I dont watch them myself. I must have seen Cindrella, Beauty and the beast, Lion King and Little Mermaid a million times on vhs growing up, but I didnt even feel compelled to watch their live action remakes. I still havent seen them and i had disney+ for years. And aside from Little mermaid and I guess snow white, most of those were faithful adaptations. I just didnt want to relive my childhood and watch basic ass stories written for kids. If george lucas is saying he wrote star wars for kids, im inclined to believe him. Phantom Menace is a kids movie. I struggled to get through it in my teens and skipped the next two. fuck that. I had Matrix and Memento to dissect and analyze at a deeper level.

maybe i shouldnt be telling people what to watch or not watch. i dont even remember saying that but if i did, sorry. i am just saying these movies are not for us anymore. we've aged out. i cant even enjoy action movies like bad boys and fast and furious. ive skipped almost all marvel movies since end game 5 years ago while everyone here watched each and every one of them hoping they would end up being good.

im surprised i still enjoyed a movie about the force and wookies. they must have done something right for me to sit through all three movies. Both Rian and JJ are visual auteurs and their movies looked way better than the trash Marvel was putting out at the time. That alone kept me from tuning out.

Trashbag movie. A cavalry charge across the deck of the Star Destroyer, my god what are we doing people. Ill bet they high-fived at how sick they thought that shot was too.

As bad as this movie was it failed to hurt me though, because Last Jedi had already nuked any emotional nerve-endings I had for Star Wars into total oblivion.

When I saw 9 in the theater and Leia died, a woman in there let out a blood curdling cry of grief. I care about these characters but that was ridiculous. It took her time to gain composure.

I legitimately left the theater feeling completely empty inside after seeing that travesty of a movie.

Sure, it looked good, but it completely tore down everything that made me love the franchise.

I went from a lifelong fan (my grandfather gave me his VHS tapes of the original trilogy as a kid) to complete apathy after that.

Took me a while to process it all, honestly. Still makes me a little sad to think about.

Nah. I still like and rewatch the PT and OT and Rogue One. I also enjoyed most of Mando S1 and S2, Andor, the Clone Wars/Rebels/Bad Batch/Tales of the Jedi etc.

The ST just has shit writing.

I still remember how subdued and quiet my group was when we left the cinema after watching TLJ. We were all so sombre as we made our way to where we usually have lunch.

We had this tradition where we would meet up on Dec 26 of every year to watch that year's blockbuster movie. This tradition that had been going on for probably 10+ years ended after we all watched Rise of Skywalker 😂😓

Wait Episode IX final one right? Its an unfathomable piece of shit. Searching for the scanning device and pretty much everything was a waste of time. Why did Palpatine even wait with the armada he had, and how could he build this in the first place. About TLJ, casino world aside I kind of liked it. Unlike the safe TFA it dared to go down a different path at least. But overall it wasn't great. Rogue is probably the best of the new SW movies.

But the new trilogy did put the prequel trilogy in a new pespective; it manages to make those look decent. I still hate Clones, but Phantom was at least a fun adventure movie that perhaps was a bit too kiddy at times. Sith wasn't that bad either.

It's exactly the same as the last Indy - they turned a beloved character into a senile idiot, fatigued with life. Leia - show how old she is. Luke - show how old fart he is. Han - brooding boomer. It's like Hollywood hates old people despite all the greatest actors are now in their 60s and 70s.

I don't think they hate old people, with Star Wars it was just an executive decision that everyone should start liking new original characters instead of the old ones. It was literally "This is what you like now. Stop liking this other thing. There. Now you will buy the correct toys".

And in Indy is wasn't about being old, it was about being a successful figure. He's a man and white, so they had to deconstruct that.

Let's face it we were already too dead inside to show any emotion. Edit: It's not the death itself (speaking for myself, not the woman). It's the symbolic nature of the death that they have finished wasting their chance with this character.

on Reddit in some discussion about TLJ I was like “Rey masters the Jedi mind trick despite not even knowing it was a thing, Luke’s lightsaber was calling out to her, she’s an expert gunner despite never being on a ship before and Han even asks her to join his crew…. it doesn’t make sense for her to be just some random orphan who’s great at everything. The first 6 episodes show how difficult it is to train in the force and avoid the pitfalls of the dark side. I believe Rey was supposed to be someone important (maybe trained by Luke) but Rian Johnson tossed that out to subvert our expectations”

The response I got: “sounds like you just don’t like it that a woman can have some force powers without a MAN giving it to her”

Yeah this is how insane these dipshits are. Not satisfied with some random orphan girl being an expert at everything she does the first time she does it? Misogyny.

I was honestly shocked. Dipping into the discussion about this movie really showed me how “modern audiences” think. Some people tried soooooo hard to deflect criticism away from TLJ. I think that deep down, they took some satisfaction at seeing “the patriarchy” get torn down and replaced with avatars of their progressive intersectional ideology.

BTW I later got banned from r/movies after the trailer for Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion” I posted “I guarantee the real culprit will be a white person” LMAO. These people are absolutely obsessed with race/gender but you are the racist/sexist one if you so much as mention it.

Of course you are allowed to talk about race if it's in line with the pre-scribed narrative. Anything else-banhammer

This is modern definition of being inclusive.

The actors aren't coming back. Anything new is from a time without them anyway. Nothing is being retconned.

Star Wars can come back. But it will never be what it could have been with the opportunity they blew. It's lost hype and momentum that could have been the backbone against inevitable ups, downs and screw-ups for another generation of Star Wars content. Then they just kept spamming stuff. It's irrevocable brand damage.

The sequel trilogy is an amazing example that great trailers do not equate to good movies.

Better yet, an example of making movies that are messy trash with three or four marketable things filmed and peppered in SPECIFICALLY FOR trailers.

It reminds me of like...a video game composer being told to write the OST with no concept, scripts, outlines, or footage of the game. Or like Uncharted 3, more symmetrically. A title that is obviously hamstrung together so that it makes *some kind* of sense when Drake goes from a burning Mansion in the forest to a ship Graveyard. Like the people behind the scenes are snickering in the back and taking bets with each other over just how absurd and incongruent they can make their setpieces without being reprimanded or chained to a computer in the back for penal crunching. ....haha.

It's just trash. Key cutting factory, right next to a hippie hall of ADHD shill squirrels who will dance to the jangling. The rest of the story and production doesn't matter, because the youtoobers will only remember/gush about the scene where Whoopi Goldberg's Jedi character Force-Farts the Death Star III in half, so that's all WE'LL care about, too. We just want ten second soundbytes of "contemporary ordinary people," losing their shit to lightsaberzzz and Ahsokaaaa and Amandla Stenberg's floppy thighssss.

Star Wars ruins started with TLJ. Ryan Johnson it's the responsible of this entire shit. I don't think anyone takes into account the damage he did. A 40-year legacy and he ruined it forever and ever.

There is no way to save this disaster.

It rages me every time i think about it. Peace, im out.
