LTTP: Megaman Battle Network Multiplayer

I’ve been a huge fan of the Battle Network series for years now (BN2 was the best). It's a mediocre RPG at best, but where it really shines is with its combat system. IMO, the Battle Network series has one of the most unique battle systems.

However, I’ve only played the multiplayer a few times. I rarely play the multiplayer, but when I do battle a friend, I'm blown away with how incredible the experience is. This weekend I picked up the game for the first time in a while and challenged my friend who picked it up fairly easily. We ended up playing some really amazing competitive matches, and it left me wanting more of this game.

So GAF, anyone else absolutely love this game's multiplayer? I am absolutely dying to see this series become an online or console experience, but I don't see this series ever coming back to life. A console release with local multiplayer would be amazing. It would give Super Smash Brothers a good run for its money as a local multiplayer console game. Its too bad this series was burned out so quickly and left for dead by Capcom.

I was so hooked on BN MP! Loved Battle Network 4!
Oh and if you want more, there is Megaman Starforce (Black Ace, the third one was the best, IMO) which plays really close to it!
edit: nice picture edit, relates more to the topic : D

I'm checking out Starforce now. I'm just bummed this series never made it to consoles. It would be perfect for XBLA/PSN. This game with local multiplayer on a TV screen would be amazing.

Yeaaaah boi.

The whole series multiplayer was second to only SSBM in my household!

As far as single player goes, 2 is a personal favorite of mine but if you're in it for the multiplayer, then 3 is easily the best of them all. Mod codes and the Navi Customizer give the Netbattles in 3 serious staying power.

edit: A console release would totally mess up the flow of Netbattles. Using the same screen to choose chips is silly--worse than screen peeking even.

Thank YOUUUUUU!!! Finally, someone sees it my way. The only BN I haven't played is BN 5, and I had no desire to get it. At all.

Man, I still like the earlier BN's, because instead of the whole, "haha, look at you change into a giant gutsman, weak' there were actually different variations of megaman, and the buster charge even changed. Loved that!

Man, I miss BN so much. Damn you Capcom; I'll see you in hell!

omg battle network 3 >2 > 5 > 6 > 4. Never played the first. I loved playing with my twin brother (criterondog, he's a gaffer).

Yeah, you're right. I didn't even think about this.
I've got to get my friends hooked on this game. A battle network game for the 3DS would be awesome too.

lol seems like he found the thread already

I am so tempted to replay Battle Network 4 right now.
Any idea how to get rid of dark megaman? I already have soul cleanse...
And I totally forgot how hard the final boss was. :(

Battle Network 3 felt like the absolute highlight of the series mechanically. The best chips, the most robust NaviCust, the most Styles, and of course the ridiculous level of post game content.

At first I was a little annoyed they never brought over the BN1 rerelease for the DS, and then I heard they hadn't even bothered to add online multiplayer, and then I no longer gave a shit.

Admittingly I never played the multiplayer, but seeing some of the stuff you can do in this game, wouldn't it be broken as fuck? Like literally who can use their chips the fastest kind of broken?

MMBN did have an amazing multiplayer mode. In Japan they held tournaments every year for awhile. Even MMBN1 had fun multi even though that one wasn't that great. Battle Network 3 is when they started ramping it up with the StyleChange system from the previous one and then adding NaviCustomization. I personally liked the Soul/Cross/whatever more just because of the visual element. And it was easier to pick a form you liked so you could build multiple folders for them. But playing through EXE4 three times for that was annoying as hell.

Capcom needs to re-release them for the 3DS or something. I'd prefer remakes, but after looking at Operate Shooting Star that would be doubtful.

Capcom proved to me however that they didn't understand the system at all when they moved StarForce to first person and restricted you to a single column. I played about four hours of the first game before I put it down.

I miss the Battle Network series. What a shame it ended with 6 and Starforce just took it all down hill. The battle system was pretty boring in Starforce but was really really fun in BN. Even Network Transmission was really fun to play. Man I miss those days. My nephew and I would play BN 2 like crazy and we even unlocked all the special chips dropped when playing linking up.

Yeah, I was going to show him the thread, and he was like "Yeah, was it bumped?"
I really wish they would make a BN7, with online play.

This game had MP? Only played the first. Did that one have it? Damn, this game seems like it would be a great MP game. Might pick up two copies of a sequel just to enjoy the series again and have a go at it with my fiance since they're so cheap now.

Man, I put so much time into BN multiplayer, it was so fun.

Not necesarily, because there is a bit of strategy involving placement (most useful chips are the type that fire straight down a row), and 'locking' your opponent for a high-damage combo can be difficult. Also, any chip that 'freezes time' to work (most powerful chips do) can be countered with any of yours (in BN4 and on). Because of this, most ingame strategies involving fast sequential chip usage won't work in PvP.

Really wish there was a Battle Network game in English that had Online Multiplayer.
This is my only wish in life.

Although, I do wonder what would be done about lag, because this game does rely on pretty tight timing for battles...

They watered down the battle system for Star Force because they wanted to get rid of the complexity of EXE to get new players in or something. It was bad. But Star Force 3 was actually pretty good. Too bad that 2 was so terrible that it dragged down the series with it.

Naw, there are several things that prevent that. Each chip has a letter code attached to it and you can only use the same code per turn. So you can have a Cannon with an A, B, or C code, but your other chips might only come in J,K, or L. Alternatively there are * code chips that work in combination with any chip, but those are rare for the most part. But even then spamming would really work. If you miss with all those chips and you used them in the beginning then you are left with the 45 seconds or so of waiting until the timer lets you go back to choosing chips. Also, there are defensive chips that make you immune to damage for awhile.

Yeah I don't think this game wouldn't work well online. Lag would be too influential over gameplay.

The sixth is compatible with wireless Game boy adapters. I might have to pick those up and get my friends into this game

My friend is currently playing Team Protoman (BN 5). He got stuck at the part where you hit the guardians with the stick, 100 times. He finally got past it. I now want to play mp.

MMBN3 MP was a highlight of my middle-school years. So addicting. I can't believe Capcom is sitting on it like they are.

With Legends 3 canceled, and the battle network team left with nothing to do Capcom may make them make another one. You never know.

It could be another pseudo-port like OSS, though.

Yeah, that's where I got stuck. Quit and never looked back. I might replay one of the earlier entries, though, now that y'all have reminded me how great they were...

The battle network team left? :(

New BN for Vita/3DS? Colour me interested. Never tried the MP though, because I didn't have any friends with GBAs back in the day.

Yeah, me and my best friend in middle school had a blast link-battling in BN3

Same here, except it was 2.

(Good way to chase off girls btw)

I remember the game being full of overpowered combinations though. I wouldn't call it a great multiplayer game aside from its cool concepts.
