Recently purchased a Samsung smart tv and it had the Xbox app built in, so I linked my series x controller, I upgraded to game pass ultimate and boom I’m playing game saves I had, battling online etc. right, I’m enlightened now.

And this is different than “onlive” back in the day which didn’t work out, worried about lag.

Could Sony bring their games to tvs?

You can load games real quick. Also this proves you don’t need a physical console.

the real Problem is that XCloud is running the Series S versions of most games, and streams can be prone to artifacts etc. they need to work on getting the quality to where GeForce Now is.

This also doesn’t prove you don’t need a console, since none of the consoles allow you stream all your games, or all released games.

Let Sony out of your head. Sony is not in a desperate "losing" position to bring their games everywhere.

Cool you found a use for this dying brand on your Samsung TV lol

I play the cloud on my Xbox Series X for games that I don’t own and hard drive space is at a premium. It runs really well with no lag. Occasionally I get a reminder that I’m using the cloud, but otherwise I wouldn’t even know it. On my Steam Deck, I sometimes get a little lag, but that’s improved a lot over the past year. I could easily see myself holding off on next gen for a little while and streaming exclusively next gen titles on my Series X.

A me problem is that I often get up and wander away for various reasons, so the fact that if no motion is detected you will be booted out hurts. It would be great if every game had a save anywhere feature, otherwise you have to be more strategic about your game sessions. I get that the cloud ticker is running and you're killing your data if you just let it run, so it's a dilemma.

Same. I have an S upstairs and an X downstairs. I don't always download the game on both. Played a few hours of Persona 3 on cloud and I really didn't even see a difference. It does help when it's not a high speed action game.

I wouldn't want only cloud, but it's a nice additional feature to occasionally tap into.

I know, it’s amazing! I’m in another country for work playing forza horizon 5 and indiana on a smart tv on the hotel’s room or on my phone with backbone. Love the fact that the lag is minimum nowadays

Strangely Sony did this years ago but ended the stand alone app & moved it to PlayStation Plus Premium but now you can only do this on PS4 , PS5 & Portal

But yes this is the future Luna also works pretty good & of course G-Force Now .

When kids find out they can just hook up a controller to a TV or Fire stick & play Fortnite it's going to spread like a wildfire.

What a weird response. Are you 12?

As O onQ123 says, Sony even started this years ago with PS Now, though it was eventually discontinued.

An eventual expansion to streaming on Smart TVs etc was in the Insomniac leak, by the way

Kids will not flock to a big screen TV that Dad is watching sports with.
Kids will be flocking to a portable handheld gaming device.

I play via xcloud when I am out and about using my phone and Razer kishi, got 5g everywhere where I live and plan without limits so experience is usually good. Also, sometimes before I install game on my series x I do play them via xcloud, if I like the game I might install it or continue playing it via xcloud. Saves sync so you just continue your session from any device.

Sony kinda turned their backs on video game streaming, onlive kinda started it off for the video game historians.

Was really impressed with Xbox streaming, you need a subscription still.

I always loved game streaming, even if it's seen as a heresy in most of online gaming forums. That's why I bought most of the Switch cloud games, using PS+ streaming as much as I can, have a (free) GeForce Now account, used to have a Stadia account, and tried xCloud's beta

Yeah the quality is quite shitty... 1080p, no HDR, input lag, artifacts everywhere... Everytime I tried it I was really motivated like "ok let's do this, anyway right now I don't have another way to play Indy" but after 5 minutes I drop the controller... It is "playable" (barely) but not at all enjoyable.

Hopefully Sony isnt as smug as you are about their current status because i fear this kind of stagnation may burn them in the long term if their forward thinking is as limited as some of its hardcore loyalists. Xbox as a brand does need to recover (and it very well may not) but generally speaking i do believe a platform agnostic approach will eventually be embraced and it may not necessarily be the Xbox brand to pioneer it but i still believe that day is coming.

With that being said Microsoft is a very large company (almost 3 trillion compared to Sony’s 136 billion last i checked ) and is now the rights holder to a lot of big franchises and without question may be the industry’s biggest publisher either now or soon enough. So flexing some of their financial might and willingness to weather some failures has proven to be something they’re willing to do.

So make no mistake if a platform agnostic future is embraced and i believe it will be because regardless of Sony’s hardware sales PC/mobile are now the leading platforms in terms of player count and most young kids dont have brand loyalty like we do towards the big 3 manufacturers so expect other companies like Apple , Tencent , Amazon to get involved in streaming storefronts and things may rapidly change for a more traditional company like Sony. Lets hope theyre prepared for such changes.

Yes, the quality is getting better, and for most people with great internet and hardwired who are close to a server, it is more than good enough. I do believe that streaming is the future, but I can’t see it becoming the standard within the next 10 years, possibly longer. The tech and infrastructure is just not there.

What a run for Playstation, nothing lasts forever, and Im saying that while Playstation in its prime and peak with PS5 finally putting the last nail of Xbox coffin. Heading towards a platform agnostic future doesn't take anything away from Sony's achievement in this space. How many electronics brand claim they created something that lasted them 40 years successfully?! A few if any. Iphones won't last forever, Playstation won't last forever, Nvidia won't last forever...etc

Market Valuations means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things (stock # * Price(perceived value))
Hasn't Tesla, Nvidia recently lost 1Trillion out of their value? That's not assets or even IPs its perceived value by people.

If Sony is this cheap MS should have tried their hand instead of wasting $80B on Activision, but you know exactly thats impossible to happen since Sony is way beyond MS ability to buy.

Sony are prepared for the future, they are the only ones trying with VR, making big advancement in cloud (Portal).. trying their best with collaborations with AMD in GPU tech, always trying to efficiently innovate in gaming applications (PS5 SSD) , DualSense...etc
Having said all that, I will iterate that nothing last forever, If Playstation manage to be with us in 2040 in one form or another that will be one hell of an achievement giving how "consistently" successful Playstation "console" were since 1994.

Edit: not sure if I properly quoted you in this post I indigoSociety

i appreciate the respectful exchange and i dont necessarily disagree with anything you said but my initial reply was responding to you sort of shaming a guy for saying he enjoyed the experience of the built in xbox app on his samsung tv and how he liked the cloud experience and cross save feature and hoped Playstation would do the same.

Instead you spun it into a console war narrative about how its a dying brand and smugly said not verbatim but good for you man you found a cool thing about a dying brand and how playstation doesn’t have to do that because of their position when the OP was not insinuating anything of the sort other than he’d like a ps app on his tv.

So what im saying is yes in some regard you might be right that playstation doesnt necessarily have to show up anywhere besides ps5 and steam at the moment but im saying that might not be the best strategy long term and may be narrow thinking. Theres a reason theyre popping up on steam. They know theyre leaving money on the table they cant afford to leave if they dont. Not saying Xbox has the right thinking or its the brand to do so im just saying Sony not making their games available in more places may not be the best vision long term because i believe the tribalism people our age have towards these brands doesn’t exist as much in younger generations.

I personally own all platforms including the Ps5 Pro so its not skin off my back but i believe forward thinking is always necessary. And as far as market evaluation/projection yes it may not be the end all be all but its meaningful given the gap between companies. Them being the Windows company may also give them an edge in executing on a hybrid and unifying both platforms. Brand of xbox has taken a hit but the company itself has the power if the execution is done right to make a product unique enough to differentiate itself. But thats a lot of if’s for certain. And PS Portal is awesome i love mine. Super impressed with it. But im moreso referring to meeting players where theyre at which obviously they seem less open to given their position as you said.
