LUNAR Remastered Collection launches April 18 (available both physically and digitally)

Sega CD. The second game got a something of an enhanced re-release on the PS1 IIRC.

This remaster collection is the first two games.
Both games were released by Working Designs for PS1. They had excellent physical editions too.

Edit: And yeah, going to get physical as well. If Amazon sells out, Play-Asia or Videogamesplus are likely to have a copy I would think.

Probably gonna pick this up day 1 if the reviews are good.

JRPG fans have been eating really good this gen (and last).

Is there anything special about these games or is it just your standard JRPG?
It has "light bugs" that that the devs were super proud of and are certainly in no way just a glorified fire fly. The game was also instrumental in proving that you can't tell stories without a CD.

Day fucking one on Switch
Absolutely. One of the finest JRPGs considering we never got Far East of Eden. I always preferred this over Arc the Lad. Working Designs best work if you ask me. Most JRPG enthusiasts probably owned or own both boxed PS1 versions. I use to have both in mint condition. Hopefully this port is good. I got to beta test the iOS version of SSSTouch. That was great except crashes were brutal at the time.

Damn, talk about a blast.

This game was pure touch on your feelings. Gorgeous, beautiful, superb animated cutscenes, and an story to make you 🥺

I still have my NTSC Lunar: Silver Star Story -Complete- posh release. 🥹

For Lunar 1 they expanded the story and added some new villains, I really liked that part.

What I didn’t like were some of the other changes. Aside from the music, they got rid of random encounters. Sounds good but in practice it sucked because they were almost impossible to avoid. They’d all make a beeline for you and you’d end up having to clear every room whether you wanted to or not. It also IIRC had some super aggressive EXP scaling that basically guaranteed you’re always at whatever level they decided you should be at for that point in the game.
You can get patches to unWorking Design the games. Highly recommend it! 😅

For the Sega CD versions? Or the remakes?

I know WD cranked up the difficulty and lowered the XP for the US versions, and made it so you have to pay to save your game in Lunar 2 lol. Did they monkey with the remakes too?

for both and they also fixed the bullshit difficulty in the PSX versions

I forget if fan patches/rom hacks are okay to link on here (as long as it’s just the patch/hack and not a rom of the game itself obviously)

I want to get this but only if it contains the Working Designs translation. As far as I know, it doesn't. It's mostly because I grew up on WD games and I love the translations. It saddens me that there is a vocal segment of gamers who act like Vic ruined these games. Vic Ireland is a legend and pretty much sacrificed his long-term prospects as a publisher by sticking with the Saturn and burning bridges with PSX over their hesitance to publish JRPGs on the platform.

I wish the game well though, Lunar is great.

Yep, they messed with the remakes as well, lol. And I was indeed talking about PSX versions.

Hard pass without the working designs translation. Just won’t be the same without it. Shame they didn’t take up Vic on his offer to give it to them for next to nothing.

Did amazon ever post the physical copies? It said first available 1/16/2025, and yet I never saw it listed that day, or any day since or before. Been unavailable every time I look.

This the only info we have so far from GungHo about the Amazon listing, and from the sound of it, there won't be pre-orders and will just go up for order on April 18.

Lunar has always had the reputation of being a “Top 20” all time JRPG.

I never played the Sega CD game, but even prior to internet as a kid, I remember Lunar Sega CD being held in very high regard.

We will see if the port/remaster is good. Will they add QoL features? I hope they do.

Nintendo Switch is really likely the greatest JRPG machine of all time, rivaling the PS1.

Yea I've never seen it take so long for Amazon to unlock their product page for preorder.

Perhaps they just posted it up way too early. The pages exist, just not available to place any orders yet.

I will be glad to see a new translation and (hopefully) reduced grind/difficulty from the PS1 game. Some of those pop culture jokes were a little cringe.

I hope the new voice actors are good. This is a top 5 JRPG of all time for me. It's just got so much damn charm, whether it's the simple hero story or wholesome characters or charming music.

Gotta say I like the old cover art much better though-

I never played Lunar 2 to completion so I’ll pick it up for that. All I own is the psp version of 1 that I disliked.

I've owned Lunar SSSC on PSX, the original release with map etc. And later I bought the fan disc edition for cheap, which was a bare bones jewel case version. Lunar 2 I guess I only played via CD-R as I did beat it on PSX, but I don't remember owning the original.

I also had both games on Saturn, which were JP only and superior in terms of balance (you never have to grind). I dabbled with the SCD version of 2 for a while too via emulator. It played a bit different, I think there was no run button or something.

Lunar 1 and 2 are really good games. On PSX they were quite tough at the beginning, but eventually you'll cruise through and use the best attacks over and over. The problem was that at first you needed to grind levels to win. On saturn this isn't the case. Its the better version for sure but WD did do a good job, and fought for these games to be localized back in the day. I just don't know whey they felt to make it more stingy with level ups and money.

How did I miss this news. This is awesome. I would love to see Arc the Lad(1-3) and Growlanser get some love like Lunar and Suikoden.

Still have the special edition ps1 games, and will never give them up.

DecentJRPG combat, but the story is nuce, and some charming localization work.

WD thought they were making the games worth more by making them harder and more tedious, I think. They did this stuff for pretty much all of their localizations.
