Marathon Releases September 23, 2025

3 maps at launch is actually magnificent for an extraction shooter. Been playing Hunt for almost 7 years now and we only have FOUR maps.
There's a 4th map coming to Marathon after launch (no timeframe yet) supposedly to be something end-game related, if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully they share a roadmap before release.

I think there's reason for some concern regarding the game but I also think that once people try the alpha and a possibly an open beta a lot of that will be gone. Gameplay looks fun as shit to be honest.
I was expecting a little more, like a social hub of some sort kinda like in The Cycle and Destiny, where you could possibly interact with vendors and others players. More customization options for our characters, etc.
Going to a menu and then map and then back again to the main menu just seems kinda meh to me. There was an interview from Dr Lupo with one of the devs and he kinda said they're looking into those things but nothing to confirm yet.

I was also hoping the maps where a little bigger and allowed for more exploration, finding secrects and that sort of thing, instead of always fighting but they could possibly tweak the number of teams in the map (but that's just a personal preference) And maybe the 4th one is exactly that, who knows... the thing is if they get the basics right from the beginning they'll have a good framework for future updates and can do whatever they want and the community asks for.

Regarding the state of the game at release, well it's bungie, if we look how they handled Destiny they never got it right at first. Destiny 1 release was kinda of a shit show and the game only got real good when TTK released.
Destiny 2 from what I recall had a better launch but it still had problems that got fixed later, so yeah I expect no diferent here. I honestly think it might be sony pushing them to release the game this year, because it sure wouldn't hurt them to give the game a couple more months in the oven.

Anyway still excited to give it a try in a couple of months but my hype for it went down a bit.

Imagine making an extraction shooter without proximity voicechat 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀💀💀
Yeah this is a big downside for me as well.

Love to troll a bit on voice. Often times it bites me in the ass anyway as I think I'm hotshit but then still get owned but calling someone out while they run away from you will never get old.

What I'd like o know, is that they mentioned that new maps can be unlocked. I wonder how that works?

Same as how it's been mentioned that maps can completely change over the course of a season based on community efforts.

Curious to learn more about this.
They will share more in summer as they said. Probably there will be a lot of secrets to solve and figure out too

Keep it engaging and people will stay.

I remember when Bungie scrapped the entire narrative of destiny and then rushed, re used assets to throw something together for launch. That worked out really well and I completely trust them to deliver an incredible narrative 5 months before launch.

The more I look into this game it looks like a complete dumpster fire.

Bungie fired the writer a month before Destiny's original releasedate and had to delay the launch by a year.
Hence why there was "no time to explain" the story.

Destiny was a dumpster fire at launch as well because of it and it took until The Taken King, the 3rd expansion a year later, before the fanbase was overall happy with the game.

And then they repeated the same with Destiny 2, where they completely rebooted the game's development a year before release.

People enjoyed the games regardless, mostly because of the gunplay and gameplay loop.

Voice chat with people who aren't in your team must be removed in all PvP games to reduce trolls and toxicity.
they also mentioned that they want to build this game with the community 🚩 (code for: this shit is ways off) while asking a premium price? 🚩🚩
Bungie didn't say that it will have a premium price. They said that it's going to be a premium game (which means it's a paid game, not a F2P/freemium game) but that isn't going to be a full priced game. Meaning, it may cost $40.

The thing about building the game with the community means that -as it was obvious and we already knew- it's going to be a GaaS title, meaning they'll going to expand it and change/tweak it over time, taking community feedback and suggestions as part of the data they'll consider to keep evolving the game in the future.

Those people that cry about trolls would have never survived the lobbies of old

Nah, we don't cry. We simply are normal people who want retarded screaming rat kids and retarded losers who scream at extrangers to be extinct, or at least to be muted from our games. Precisely because we're tired of them.

Who says Bungie thinks Marathon will be a guaranteed success?
Afaik there is no indication that points to this.

This part is one big assumption.
Success is never guaranteed, but looking at the big success they had with all their previous games, and the early numbers of Marathon are pretty huge and prove the game caused a big interest:

Huge viewship both that the initial Marathon reveal (20M views in a few days) and last weekend gameplay reveal got (got a peak of over half a million concurrent viewers watching it live only counting Twitch), or their Discord going to over 230K users this weekend.

Everything can happen, specially releasing it a month or two before GTA6, but the most likely case is that it's going to be another huge GaaS success for Sony, are Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo 7 or MLB.

But yes, nobody at Bungie or Sony said it's going to be a guaranteed success even if they may be pretty confident on it. Even the most successful devs never give stuff for granted, know that any game can tank, even due to stuff they can't control.

the artworks looks like too edgy mirror's edge, aka all round downgraded attempt.

I am not sure how sony bungie believe they can sell this game at this price point?

Are they really this dumb? Or somebody decided to rage release it and stick it up to their accounts department?

Death Chat in Warzone was awesome.

Proximity chat could also be great when done correctly. Like being able to hear other teams with positional audio as they talk to each other far away. And of course shit talking as you steal their stuff.

Surprised it's left out of this game in particular.

Did I miss the bit where they announced the price of the game?

I stand by what I said, tears have been flowing too much and games like this coddle the kids that can't handle harsh words

Its sad its left out

I don't know how many times I have heard people approaching my concealed location because they were talking to each other

But people get offended too easily in todays society

Did you say crap to people when you struck them out? Or did anyone ever drop a burn on you when they got a hit or home run off of you?

Also I don't care about trash talk in games, if you don't like it mute it. But if you want to have it, it can be fun. Most people online though are not clever with their trash talk.

People have no idea how much shit was said on the field during games especially between fans and those of us sitting out in the bullpens for hours with not a lot to do

Now most players are overly friendly to each other as so many work out together in the offseason

And did I personally talk trash or have trash talked back to me?

Since I was a relief pitcher and USUALLY only came in for one maybe two hitters the best trash talkers did it during my warmup tosses or while they were rounding the bases as I padded some of the greatest HR hitters of all time stats

Ya know, you can mute voice chat.

My brother's wife had the same issue in rocket league.

Instead of accepting that voice chat can be toxic or instead of not using voice chat, some want voice chat to change.

As we can see by this reaction, voice chat never changes. Instead they are just muting it for you now. When everything must be for everybody or nobody, nobody will have anything. Public voice chat is simply not for everyone.

Very simple fix for everyone, toggle it on or off

Then just mute out of team chat?
Its not like its something games havent done before.

  • Mute all.
  • Mute out of team.
  • Mute out of party.

This shit is ancient.
Simply NOT having the option at all is backwards thinking.

The immediate expectation is that its always gonna be trash talk in prox chat.
But sometimes, id argue many times its legit tactical talk or just fun interactions with people.
Ive had matches where I literally just eaves drop on another team for a while and realize its probably like their first day playing.

In a game where you can meet many different teams prox chat doesnt have to be antagonistic, especially when from everything ive seen it is very possible to be woefully underpowered vs other players, you could make impromptu alliances to get loot from stronger players by banding together as weak players.

No proximity chat in a game like this make me think that bungie doesn't know the potential audience for these games AT ALL.

I don't like the genre and the only times i thought about trying sea of thieves or tarkow is when i saw funny proximity chat shorts on yt.

Can't they just have a mute single people function? Did all the talents and veterans left bungie?

It supposed to be full priced game with 3 maps and a janked SP story mode

No it's not. Got a source on your bullshit apart from your arse?

Its rumoured to be a $40 price point, no single player and 3 maps with one more coming soon after launch.

I wish Bungie would have just put the price out there at reveal to avoid so much of the conversation revolving around it

Pretty sure it'll be $40 for the barebones release then more for the Deluxe with season one BP and skins etc.

Likely not finalised the content in the bullshit editions hence why we don't have a price just yet.

Interesting that he says there is only a 60% chance of running into other teams, that would suggest the maps are a bit bigger than I thought.
Now that's pretty cool. Sounds like there will be a bit more environmental stuff and pve. The videos I saw made it look like constant pvp.. If the maps are very big and there are other items this could be interesting. I may need to take another look.

I think the biggest problem with the game is if Marathon's neon sci fi setting can get the masses playing it.

It seems the biggest extraction shooters have a darker grittier style to them. Marathon is like one part Mirrors Edge, one part Xdefiant, one part Gen Zers wearing sci fi costumes. Will this resonate with enough gamers who like the art style in an extraction shooter.

Not every shooter fan even likes playing extraction game loops too. So this game doesn't seem to have back up modes like TDM or objective modes.

So unless Bungie thinks there's a big untapped market for smaller map extraction games in bright coloured sci fi settings, I dont think this game will do well, especially if compared to Destiny games.

... is getting me trans vibes. the body proportions are also very weird. Is not Concord leves of gross but is definitively in the same category.

They are all synthetic so.....it could very well be a dudes consciousness in a female looking runner.

Watch the short movie to get an idea of what the story they arent going to give us is.
