There's no precident for a success like Brain Training though ... thus the "rules" that might apply to a regular game franchise, do not neccessarily apply to it.

Looking at the sales numbers, obviously newer versions of the games haven't hurt the older versions at all.

Why would you group English Training with Brain Training. If the game was called by its proper Japanese title you wouldnt think twice about grouping them so closely except that they are nongames.

Holy Crap! Is that right?! Its the first Capcom game to break a mil since the first Onimusha. The series has been on the downward slide ever since, I don't think Oni3 even broke 500 K. What's going on here!?

I thought the games got progressively better, too. I still need to play Shin Onimusha, but it's looking excellent as well.

To me Brain Training is a legit game moreso than Animal Crossing.

There's an express purpose in Brain Training, puzzles/tasks to solve, and basically the equivalent of a "high score" ranking system to beat ... that's a game fellas.

Brain Training has more in common with Wario Ware than Nintendogs or Animal Crossing.

I consider Nintendogs a game because of the frisbee competition.

All three Brain Training are very much so games. In fact they both pretty much follow the Wario Ware formula only with words and numbers in stead of shapes.

DS Dictionary and English Training are completely different types of software from the above.

The kindergarden brain game is a knockoff from a third party. Believe me, there are plenty coming.

Well the Brain Training games has a goal, to beat your previous score. I'd compare it to tetris or asteroids. Most of the earliest video games didn't have any goal beyond beating your previous score. Even nintendogs has a points system that allows you to unlock other items and dogs... This makes being a good trainer your goal. Just because some of these games have an educational slant, that doesn't take away the fact that they are games. They are quiz GAMES. By most of GAF standards, all of videogamedom is based on a bunch of nongames. Nice to see Nintendo bringing video games back to their roots!

Of course I'd say english training and the touch dictionary aren't actually games but are specifically learning tools. I don't know if either really keeps score. Also, I don't think English training is part of the Brain Training series.

I never really understand wtf Capcom is doing with their franchises.

The Megaman games they put on the PSP would've been better off on the DS, while Resident Evil (Bio Hazard) would've probably done better on the PSP (or not ... but it is like the 50000th time they re-release this thing).

Band Bros. Revolution you mean? Both Band Bros and 2 Train Your Brain / English Training come from the same division at EAD. By the way, the director of English Training is Noriko Kitamura, she is the co-director of Band Bros. and thus put her character creation

If Nintendo wants a great launch in Japan, all they need is a Brain Training game for Rev @ launch.

Posssibly though I think Nintendo learned a lesson with Brian Training ... adults who don't like gaming don't want cartoony or video-game-ish characters shoe-horned into the games they might consider, so they'll probably have to drop the "Band Bros." moniker and go for something a bit more "upscale".

Maybe they could use a famous conductor or musician in Japan to help sell such a game, just as Brain Training used a famous professor.

Baseball (with Ichiro) and Golf Training could also be natural fits on the Revolution. I wouldn't be surprised if both of those are in development.

Touch golf flopped on DS though. As did electroplankton. Its not always a guaranteed smash.

The game is not really cartoony. It is definitely right for the pop-teen audience it is aiming for. There is just a big difference from a music game, to the phenomenon that the Brain franchises has gathered. To be honest, Train Your Brain started off slow.. it's the price and timing that made it a craze. It was cheap, there was no big game overshadowing it, and it built a lot of hype.

Besides, you are going off on a tangent and mentioning Nintendo do 400 Train games now. I think Nintendo's already in danger of saturating the market, if anything Animal Crossing and Nintendogs are more successful world wide at this moment. Which means instead of 3400 Train games, Nintendo will continue looking for more franchises like Stage Debut and perhaps Cooking with Chef Iwata.

I don't know if Brain Training would do as well on the Revolution.

I think the portability of the game is probably a big reason for its success in addition to being able to write directly on the screen.

However, Nintendo is clearly on to something here, and will likely build upon it.

Yeah, but it depends on what the focus of the game is. If they want an older audience, having no cartoon characters and using a famous Japanese composer would give the product much more class.

Stage Debut is a game I think could probably work well if they had a lot of Japanese pop idols in it.

You know what I was thinking for Stage Debut. Put it on Wifi, let people make tv shows and music videos like they showed at E3, but with Wifi allow them to upload the videos so others can watch and vote on the idea.

Almost like an interactive American Idol.

That would be a really good idea actually, but Nintendo would have to be filter out the videos that would be allowed online. No doubt some idiots would try and upload porn and what not.

The Japanese trackers usually combine multiple SKUs, and Famitsu goes the extra mile to combine the three nintendogs versions and various double Pokemon editions (not with Mysterious Dungeon, though, since they're on different platforms). They even combine console bundles with separate software sold.

Hardware numbers aren't going to be as interesting now until DS lite is released. It was fun to watch DS soar over Xmas just to read all the reactions from people. With DS lite coming out in a month it probably means Nintendo is holding back restocking the old DS on a major level.
