Reposting some of my comments in the previous thread here to continue the discussion:

I wouldn't say Re:Coded "bombed", but so far the debut definitely underperformed. This was expected though, because retailers were already hinting that the game wasn't getting much traction in pre-orders, and it didn't seem like there was a ton of interest as normal.

It should be noted that this is a remake of the cellphone game, which most KH fans in Japan would have already played if they cared about it back when it was released over a year ago. The DS remake was created mainly for the western audience who were unable to play the mobile version.

The marketing for this in Japan was also a lot lower than usual for a KH game, and it was announced at E3 in a very quiet manner, and released in Japan just a few months after that.

Macross Frontier shows that if you bundle a demo or a throwaway interactive experience into a blu-ray movie which would have sold pretty well on its own, you can increase the sales even more. It also indicates that the otaku fanbase in Japan are well informed enough that it doesn't matter whether you sell the movie in video stores or game stores - they'll know where to buy it.

And to Spiegel's point about > 55% of LTD, that's true, but with such low opening sales, I think it won't have an issue selling out an initial shipment of 200-250k. Maybe it won't, but it should get close at least.

Basically I googled "Red Dead Redemption Japan" and "Red Dead Redemption Take Two Japan" and there's a whole lot of noise and old articles and not a lot of signal. I was aware that Capcom published their older games and I was just looking for clarification.

Pokemon may not have a deep story, but the game mechanic is waaaaay deeper than most RPGs out there. It evolves a lot of strategy and moves that make it feels like a fighting or strategy game than an RPG.

Fucking ridiculous. Previous best selling Macross was:
PSX Macross: Digital Mission VF-X - 100.978 (LTD: 255.185)
Back in 1997! Its also not just above PSP games debuts, but also nearly both their LTDs (161k and 149k). Not bad for a macross demo with extra movie

03. / 00. [NDS] Kingdom Hearts Re:coded (Square Enix) - 95.505 / NEW
I think we were anticipating it but SE still probably aimed too high, although understandable given 358/2 did so good back then. Wouldn't surprise if it hits bargain bins soon if they really shipped 250k.

04. / 00. [PS3] Red Dead Redemption (Take-Two Interactive) - 70.599 / NEW

So damn nice. Reminder:

Little by little its getting more usual to see western big guns doing respectable numbers on the PS3/360. Found its niche I'd say.

Not that good, its about the same debut as Class of Heroes 2 on PSP only but I think Acquire was expecting a bit more going multiplatform.

Best start for a F1 game since:
[PS1] Formula 1 '99 (SCE) - 39.578 / 88.878
So better than all those on PS2, PSP, PS3 from SCE or EA


Hardware-wise, PS3 so-so with such hot software sales lately. Oh well.
