Is there like a gaming court out there that decided what does and doesn't count as a JRPG?
Yea this always confused me
Is there like a gaming court out there that decided what does and doesn't count as a JRPG?
Nier: Automata is an "Action RPG" according to Square Enix, and Nioh is a "Dark Sengoku Action RPG" according to Koei Temco, therefore they aren't "true JRPGs" according to me!!!Is there like a gaming court out there that decided what does and doesn't count as a JRPG?
well, that's................ debatable, yeah, there is a big chance hat Splatoon 2 is gonna outsold DQXI ps4, but for me, Nah

Fair enough, but still, with a 4 million+ userbase and DQXI being a ps4 big hit, DQXI also has a chance to outsold Splatoon 2, at least until the end of this yearPast data would suggest there is very little question, at all.
The PS4 has struggled to make "big hitters" that even scratch 1mil with FFXV being the only one to crawl its way within sniffing distance of 1 million sales. How much of a percent increase do you see the DQXI title offering over, let's say, 1 million sales? 20%? 50%? 75%?
On WiiU, a disastrous console that stifled its own software sales potential (as the 3DS has made very evident with the late ports), Splatoon sold ~1.5 million LTD (it has no doubt grown well past that number by the end of it, unless I am recalling incorrectly). To reach these numbers, on a much healthier much more software friendly platform (ie. the Switch), the PS4 version of DQXI would have to see a 50% increase over its highest current performing title with (a.) no basis of this in any other software, (b.) no showing of strong "big" selling capabilities, and (c.) with a need for ~30% tie ratio in the face of a 3DS version and subsequent Switch version which threatens to cut off the legs of the series down the road.
I *could* see the PS4 version of DQXI having an initial higher sales performance at and around release, in fact I think this is likely just due to the limited population and hardware availability of the Switch. But LTD in the long run? I think the PS4 version of DQXI will be lucky to not be looking at multiplier values of Splatoon 2's LTD vs its own.
I would say that this is not debatable at all, really. The PS4 just has not proven to be a capable platform for "big" performances in Japan. That's simply a fact of history and precedent, and there's no arguing it. Its a console that simply struggles to move large volume of any given title. You are arguing against this if you think it "debatable".

For Splatoon 2 to not outsell DQXI PS4, we would have to expect DQXI PS4 to overperform and Splatoon 2 to underperform. It's possible but the odds are poor.
It'll be possible if I steal every splatoon 2 truck this coming July.
Dragon Quest VI DS had a bunch of issues that prevented it from selling well, non of which had much to do with its marketing.Didn't Nintendo publish Dragon Quest VI remake for DS in NA and it didn't do too hot either?

but come on, it's dragon quest,I think it could sell over one million on a console with a low usebase like the ps4, who knows what will happen

Splatoon 2 will outsell both the 3DS and PS4 version by the end of the year. Even if you combine their totals I'd expect Splatoon 2 to be by far and away the biggest game of 2017.

Huh that's a lot of units. Puts in the upper echelon of Vita software. Not sure if it was already known/old/anyone cares but Romancing SaGa 2 PS Vita version exceeded 200,000 downloads
Mentioned here: https://www.famitsu.com/news/201705/09132677.html

Makes Scarlet Grace all the worse too.
How many digital units did Scarlet Grace sell?
Not huge enough to guarantee Scarlet Grace 2.☆~☆
How many digital units did Scarlet Grace sell?
Evidently not enough for them to brag about that game's sales instead.

DW9 is a fall/holiday release for this year? They are dropping FE Warriors for Nintendo platforms for this season....so I don't think anyone was expecting another big Musou title around the same time.I suppose there's a KT-Sony partnership for this one then, as highlighted by how the game was first shown in a Sony-sponsored livestream.
I hope people don't start saying that KT was blatantly lying about Switch support in spite of the current evidences (Nights of Azure 2, NA: Taishi), but I can see the usual suspects readying themselves to say it.

Seems like they are really trying with DW9... Maybe they can revive the series a bit and can attract the people who are tired of all the spin-offs.Another?
There are rumors that Atelier Marie/Elie/Lily remakes are coming to the ps4 too
(took it from blackkite lol)

How do you know? Were you at Unite 2017 Tokyo yesterday?

It's also one of the bigger PS4 titles post DQXI - so Sony will push it hard, looking forward to see how it performs.
I wasn't so I missed when they announced it had a 90% digital ratio. I have brought shame upon myself, I'm gonna go commit sudoku.

Well yeah, the Switch just came out. Obviously the PS4 has more JRPGs right now, but that's dishonest to not recognize S-E's support for the Switch already... Same for other publishers already supporting it or planning to (NIS, Atlus, etc).
For sales, are you talking about Japan or globally? Because I don't think we got enough sales updates to do that comparison globally.
Nier, NiOh and Persona 5 all seem to be selling pretty well. I wonder who's buying those games.
If splatoon 2 underperformed I would actually be afraid for the Japanese market
Unless "remake" means PS2 ISO dumps, that sounds way too generous for Koei Tecmo.
I think it will get more jrpgs than the ps4, unless the ps4 somehow beat the switch straight up in Japan in the futureIirc one of the NPD threads had DQB numbers.
Also, I highly doubt the SW will ever get close to the number of JRPGs PS4 is getting, even if we're talking just about SE.
FFType 0 HD
FFXV
KH2.8
Disgaea 5 (overseas sales)
Tales of Zestiria
There have been numerous failures as well: SO5, Tales of Beseria (?), WoFF but most if not all pubs still are confident with the platform for JRPGs.
Were you afraid when Yokai Watch underperformed?
3DS got way more than that over it's lifetime from larger franchises and original games.Iirc one of the NPD threads had DQB numbers.

Oh ok.. I get it. Well I expect FEW to perform quite solid as well - considering how much their spin-offs sell nowadays, it should be one of their better selling titles on two popular systems with n3DS/Switch.Yes we all know DW9 is a big Musou title. They've talked about it before when they announced it. It's supposed to be a big leap to open world. That's their big Musou title for 2017. There isn't any other.![]()
