Media Create Sales: Week 23, 2015 (Jun 1 - Jun 7)

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I think for the reasons others have stated this tells us less about XCX than it does about the Witcher 3. While the Witcher 3 was almost certainly more expensive to make, it was equally certainly cheaper to localize for the Japanese market than XCX was to make. If even in the RPG genre, major games are struggling to break 100K-120K, and Tales is topping out around 350K, might it not make more sense for Sony to adopt a localization rather than funding strategy for the PS4 and future consoles in Japan if the current bid to revive the Japanese market fails? Afterall, games like the Witcher 3 will be made in the Western market, and with Microsoft dead in Japan, and Nintendo with no 3rd party support, Sony will have a de facto monopoly on Western games going forward.

I could easily see a scenario where Sony concludes that if the Playstation 4(and 5) are likely to settle around Vita numbers anyway(4 million or so) and funded JRPGs at 200K, it would simply make more sense just to dump Western software on them, throw promotion resources at it, and hope that can boost the Witcher 4 from 150K to 250K or so.

For all the Nintendo v. Sony talk, and the Xenoblade X v. Witcher comparisons, the Playstation 4 and WiiU are really no longer in direct competition. They have very different software libraries, likely appeal to different audiences, play a different role in global strategies, and the efforts to branch outside their comfort areas have been mixed at best(Bayonetta 2, XBC). The success or failure of the Playstation 4 in Japan is of minimal importance to Sony, Nintendo or the Playstation Brand. It will determine whether console JRPGs, and the Japanese 3rd party console development industry survives however. I think the evidence from the Vita/3DS race is that a failure of the Playstation 4 will not result in those games going to Nintendo, but rather not existing at all.

Most of the most traditional ones will exist also on their Nintendo's next handheld, which probably means that they'll be on the home console too, going by plans of creating an environment of devices! Nintendo wins :p /halfjoke

Best selling Metroid and F-Zero games did 2.75m and 2.85m respectively, so not quite.

well, it's not that much of a difference.

also, those games did those numbers on much more sucessful consoles. Splatoon doing the same level of numbers on Wii U is already a victory.

It really shows the decline of the Japanese gaming industry, especially for home consoles, when a platform is up to 21k from 17k and it's a good result.
Still, good numbers for Splatoon.

Wow, Splatoon might be the most important Nintendo game of this generation. Not important as in "selling a kajillion units" because it obviously won't pass Smash or Mario Kart in sales. But important because its success so far might actually wake up Nintendo and re-think their IPs and the way they market them. Nintendo is a nervous sort of company, so some success in a new area might make them branch out a little more.

Should be interesting to see if the title can be evergreen or if it's reached saturation already.

I agree with this, and because of the type of game it is, it has great potential to sell well over time as the word spreads. Call of Duty didn´t become a huge franchise before it had a couple of iterations, and it will be interesting to see how sequels to Splatoon do, especially if they enjoy a bigger userbase. In any case this is a success story for nintendo with the new ¨garage¨development startegy and smaller but more focused approach to Wii U development (wich in ways showed signs of success with Toad Treasure Trackers late last year).

I kinda compared it to Pikmin a few weeks ago. I think 500k+ is a possibility for Splatoon.

http://garaph.info/softwareindividual.php//gid/664

Pikmin after two weeks on sale: 127,760
Splatoon after two weeks on sale: 238,374 (not including digital)
500k might be possible, indeed.

LTD 300k? Considering digital we should already be way beyond that number.
I cant really imagine that it has sold that much through the eShop. Famitsu has Splatoon at 238k, and that includes download card. That would mean that 70k-80k+ copies would have been sold through the eShop directly. Unless you mean to include the copies that have been sold at retail in the past 3 days as well. Should be over 300k within the next week though.

It is certainly possible that it sold better than usual due to shortages. IIRC Eshop sales are traditionally 10% of retail sales, so 25-30k is where we should put it at, give or take.

Depends on the audience target. Games like Xenoblade have failed to find an audience on any Nintendo platform, whether the 3DS or the WiiU. I doubt that will tempt 3rd parties with similar products to move, if Nintendo themselves can't sell those products.

And the wider global market presents a serious challenge for Nintendo in this respect. Their lack of 3rd party support means that not only are they alienated from the core PC/Xbox/PS4 franchises of gaming(Assassins Creed/Witcher/ElderScrolls/Fallout/GTA/Etc) but from the audience that likes those sorts of games.

I think the problem Nintendo faces in the West is that the kids market really isn't that separate. Kids might enjoy Splatoon, but they didn't grow up with Mario which is no longer iconic for them as it was for those 15 years older, and they want to play Skyrim, Call of Duty etc, and will be quite annoyed to be presented with a Nintendo console regardless of the quality of software.

This is not a problem for very Japanese software, but for franchises like Metal Gear(if it survives) or Final Fantasy, it presents a real quandary going forward because they will face the same challenge Nintendo has with Xenoblade X/Bayonetta namely attempting to create an audience for their products.

The approach they seem to be taking is spreading their software across as many platforms as possible PC/PS4/Xbox to mitigate this. Whether the NX gets those sorts of games will, I suspect, have less to do with the Japanese market itself than with how closely the NX architecture resembles that of a modern PC. If it takes the same "generic" approach Sony took this generation, then PC/PS4/Xbox could easily become PC/PS4/Xbox/WiU and the added cost of ports would be low enough to justify risking an uncertain market. If however Nintendo gets crafty, and goes for either unique architecture or a unique interface again, they may find themselves having been too smart for their own good. They may get Dragon Quest, but probably not Final Fantasy, or even Kingdom Hearts.

We know that it has at least sold 43k digital in its first 6 days. If the Digital attach rate held as well as its physical sales 20k ish wouldn't be too unbelievable for the next week.I should think. It depends on the sell through of that second shipment I suppose.

Right now I don't see Splatoon exceeding 500k by much, if at all.

We know that it has at least sold 43k digital in its first 6 days.

We don't know that though, and it's likely famitsu will show otherwise when digital sales are released a couple of months from now.

Splatoon hasn't done 2.5m yet though.

It's possible, but I'm not sure Europe is lifting it's weight there so far going by PAL.
It'd need to do near 1 million in NA like this which is a stretch

10% i can see, but as you mention, that is 25k-30k. "Way over 300k" would be 70k-80k+ :)

Surprising week for Wii U. I didn't think Splatoon would have such a following, especially in Japan. I'll be curious to see what happens next week.

If only Mario Maker weren't three months away, this momentum could have gone places.

... Unless Splatoon has three months of momentum! Quick, what is the mass of a squid and how fast does it move through ink!? What is the general friction of the Japanese retail market? We can solve this conundrum with a little bit of math!

Yoshi to the rescue lol.

I was talking with my friend about this, and, sadly... no. :p WiiU is its own worst enemy, and its software's own worst enemy, lol.

She hasn't even seen much advertising for YWW yet (unless she's just not noticed it, and she doesn't watch much TV), and its not far from release for them. It may, though, hit off well with some of the kids that Splatoon has roped in but Nintendo needs to give it more exposure.

Still, good numbers for Splatoon.

The good result isn't that it went up 4k; the good result is that immediately after a spike due to a high-profile release, it didn't go down.

I was joking for the most part, but Yoshi is still more than a month off. The game will be interesting to follow either way though.

So Tropico 5 did over 25k retail+digital, that's pretty unexpected, I never thought it would even chart.

Edit: Btw Hiska, Revelations 2 on PS3 or PS4?

Media Create Sales: Week 22, 2015 (May 25 - May 31)

Wow, that huge Wii U difference between Famitsu and MC.^_^

Week 18 - Wii U: 22,898, PS4 - 19,782
Week 19 - Wii U: 11,137, PS4 - 15,992
Week 20 - Wii U: 6,428, PS4 - 11,489
Week 21 - Wii U: 7,611, PS4 - 12,096
Week 22 - Wii U: 17,713, PS4 - 12,272
Week 23 - Wii U: 21,169, PS4 - 11,763

Seems like with very few releases, the PS4 has been able to hang on to 11-12K. This is also one of the few periods where the Wii U has even able been able to trade blows with the PS4 outside of December, but at least there is somewhat of a battle I guess...

Nintendo definitely has a huge problem with the kids market, but they're not losing it to PlayStation or Xbox. Indeed with a quick comparison of youth and family oriented multiplatform franchises like Skylanders, Lego, Just Dance, etc you'll find they still tend to sell more on Wii U than PS4 or XOne despite the platform's much weaker market position. And Nintendo's own all-ages games vastly outsell anything comparable on Sony or Microsoft's systems, with the lone exception of Minecraft.

The real problem is Nintendo's losing this market directly to Apple and Google. Kids might not be as into Mario as they used to be, but not because they want COD and Skyrim. The harsh reality is they don't want consoles at all, they want tablets and phones. This is a complete seachange and the resulting failure to replenish console fanbases with new audiences will have an eventual knockdown effect for MS and Sony too. It's not just Nintendo's problem longterm.

Given the rumblings we're hearing I think it's much more likely Nintendo's NX architecture(s) will look towards attracting support from iOS/Android than PC/PS/Xbox. Which in terms of Japan is a smart move as that's also where nearly all 3rd parties seem headed anyway.

What's up with the ps4? The sony faithful told us that once bloodborne, dqh and ffxv demo dropped it would do respectable (25k) numbers from there on out.
Well the reasonable expectations from various people in this very thread were for about what is pulling off consistently right now... above 10,000 a week.

Basically those games did the job, the base line was raised above 10,000. When the other wave of important releases come around the baseline will be pushed up.

It seems you forgot there were 5,000 - 8000 units/week for the console, maybe because those days seem like a distant memory now XD

That's what basically everything will work form now on in X1, PS4, and Nintendo next consoles.

However, in regards to NX, i wonder if NIntendo would like to test/implement the platform with their existing hardware, well the Wii U at least. Or they don't wish to associated NX with the Wii U in anyway due to the console been perceived as a failure.

Top 5 best selling games on Amazon in 2015 (so far):

#1 Dragon Quest Heroes (PS3)
#2 Majora's Mask 3D (3DS)
#3 Tales of Zestiria (PS3)
#4 Splatoon (Wii U)
#5 Dragon Quest Heroes (PS4)

Before declaring consoles are saved in Japan we should probably wait a couple more weeks, no?
Wii U was out of stock last week, that's why it got a bump this week. Next week it should go back to 15k or so.

From my experience their rollers really aren't that laggy; they're about the same as Europeans for me. Whenever I experience severe lag (and it's not my net exploding) it's virtually always an English name because severe lag is usually caused by shit net and not distance.
It's both, but high ping is most likely the main cause, shooters on PC are unplayable with distant servers/players. Nintendo should just put regional lobbies like in Mario Kart.

I'm happy the game is doing great in Japan of course :p

Spot on with the whole argument. For what it's worth, I'm happy to see a game not made by the old guard (Splatoon) seemingly resonating pretty well with kids. It at least means that Nintendo still does have the knack for making fun games that'll probably be critical down the line, no matter what platform they're developing on.

Interesting....

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Splatoon still hot, I see. Still with the stock shortages?

Yup.

I think one can expect a 20-30% decline next week as the momemtum still seems to be in Splatoon's favor.

Amazon.co.jp - In stock on June 12, 2015

We are all squids.

What's the highest-selling sku in 2015? Majora's Mask, Dragon Quest Heroes or Tales?

Splatoon might be it shortly.

GUST should be worried about the Atelier series sales, the games sell less and less everytime.

For the 3rd/4th release of the same game? I would say that sold better than expected.

Also, the musou train keeps going:

The Heroic Legend of Arslan Warriors, Omega Force’s Warriors adaptation of the anime series, will launch for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan on September 17, Koei Tecmo announced.

DQH ps3
Majora
for 2015 releases, both over 400k

overall first is YW2.5, over 500k iirc
ORAS around there (4-500k)

this is only 2015 releases, around week 19

Famitsu numbers

I'm not taking the 3DS sales to prove my point, is the whole trend, Mereru I believe is the best selling Atelier, the next games sold less and less with every new game, probably the sales are good enough but I don't think it will be good news for GUST if the next Atelier (I guess in PS4) sell less than Shallie.

Right now I don't see Splatoon exceeding 500k by much, if at all.

We don't know that though, and it's likely famitsu will show otherwise when digital sales are released a couple of months from now.

We know that is currently second in LTD digital charts

Wii U Digital Ranking LTD

1. Dragon Quest X: Nemureru Yuusha to Michibiki to Meiyuu Online
2. Splatoon
3. Pokemon Scramble U
4. Mario Kart 8
5. Art Academy SketchedPad
6. Famicon Remix
7. Super Mario World
8. Super Smash Bros for Wii U - (According to Famitsu estimates 43.550 digital not including download codes)
9. Super Mario 3D World
10. Pikmin 3

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/software/ranking.html

43.550 is the very minimum, if Famitsu estimates are accurate.

Bravely Second: End Layer finally crossed 150.000 units, there are still around 40.000 - 50.000 units sitting on shelves, it will take retailers a long while to get rid of all unsold copies.

It is currently available at a heavily discounted price.

How did the reception end up exactly? It couldn't have been great if there's that much sitting around. But I see it sitting at 3 stars on Amazon JP, so it didn't get absolutely eviscerated like some other games (*cough* ToZ *cough*).

Hmmm... I think this series might be shelved or relegated to mobile moving forward.

Here's the thing about online ratings. If a ton of people are going out of their way to spam 1-star ratings for something, you know they at least care strongly about it. They might be upset, but it shows -interest- in the title. Sometimes it's far worse to get a middling reception where those who care think it's okay, and most of the market in general just... doesn't care.
