Regarding MH and DQ on PS systems, this is what I think.
Rumor has it that the contract between Capcom and Nintendo prohibits and MH on non Nintendo franchise for 3 years. So MH won't come to PS before Dec 2014, at the earliest, and even then I think it's unlikely to come for Vita given the popularity of the franchise on 3DS now. It could come to PS4 given that the WiiU is not selling well. However, I think even that is unlikely given that no original MH game has come to PS consoles since the PS2.
Regarding DQ, if SE had any plans to put DQVIIIR or DQXI on PS platforms again, they would have announced a port of DQX to PS3/4/V when they announced the PC port. They would also have announced some sort of DQM or other kinds of spin offs so as to be clear to their audience that DQ is now on PS consoles.
I think anyone expecting either one of these franchises on PS is just setting themselves up for disappointment. I would be extremely shocked if we see any of those franchises on a PS console anytime soon.
"Western games don't sell in Japan because they're xenophobic."
Ha!
Great to see TLOU doing so well.
Western games don't sell in Japan. TLOU is doing well in JP for a western game.
However, I do not think the reason for western games not doing well there is because they're xenophobic. McDonalds, Apple, Windows, american movies and music are all popular there AFAIK, so it has to be another reason.
There is no reason TLOU shouldn't appeal to the JP audience given the popularity of RE there, but besides RE, how well do other similar games sell there? SH never sold over 200K IIRC, Siren sold ~100K, and so forth.
I actually think the reason "western games don't sell" is because JP folks might be comfortable with their main franchises, more so than we are with ours, and are very resistant to change. Would TLOU sell more if it was made by Capcom? Probably, but possibly not that much more, maybe 300K LTD? Would it sell more if it was made by Capcom and named Resident Evil 7? Definitely, it would sell 700k first week.
I think JP folks are more resistant to new franchises and changes than western gamers are. In the west sales are obviously bigger than JP in most cases due to size alone, but even when you look at percentages compared to genre leaders, you see that western games have a more "open mind" to new franchises in their favorite genres.
I just think in this day and age it's extremely tough to have a 500K+ selling new IP in Japan and damn near impossible to have a 1m+ one. Maybe the 3DS will get to beast mode a la DS and it'll be easier for new IPs to reach those numbers there.
