I have the feeling that Xenoblade is viewed as a good game, and created a lot of attention around it, because of its quality and its presentation, while The Last Story has not be praised by the public at all, therefore it got negative word-of-mouth and a sequel will not sell well. On the contrary, a hypotetical Xenoblade 2 will be big.
It's easy to see why XB would get more praise since it's such a beautiful game and offers a lot of traditional RPG gameplay with modern ease of use but did TLS really get negative word of mouth? As in being called a bad game?

Looking at Amazon reviews XB got more entries (323) and ranks higher as well, almost having full five stars whereas TLS has "only" 190 reviewers and borders on full four stars. For the preorder bonus packages XB has only 36 reviewers but scores a perfect five stars. TLS on the other hand has 97 reviewers and full four stars. The XB preorder was more expensive though.

On the Nintendo channel XB is the only game to have a platinum ranking right now whereas TLS is only a bronze game (as opposed to gold and silver ranking games like Tales of Graces and Arc Rise Fantasia).*

TLS price collapsed whereas XB retains its high price (reminds me of VFIV versus Tekken IV back then). So basically you're right, more people bought TLS but more people liked XB. But to me it seems that TLS still got a positive reaction it just didn't have the mass appeal of XB.

It's to be expected too, since TLS leans both towards the action and the simulation RPG side which just don't have the same following as traditional RPGs.

*Edit: To put those rankings into perspective: About 26600 people played TLS for approximately 39 hours and on 12.59 days. About 38000 poeple played XB for approximately 77 hours and on 24.4 days. Going by those times most people cleared the respective game. Not all of them necessarily ranked the game though and some rankers might not have published their play time data.

Using mk2 data as evidence (What is mk2?), Last Story's word of mouth is rather sub-par among the Japanese RPG nerds/mk2 users. It only scored an average score of 58/100 with 75 reviews. (To compare it with other Wii games: Xenoblade scores 89/100 with 90 reviews and Pandora's Tower 82/100 with 15 reviews).

Last Story at MK2

It was just an impression, and I'm glad it has some truth behind; I read some impressions here on NeoGAF, and it appeared that The Last Story disappointed more people (maybe because of higher expectations?) than Xenoblade.
Ah, and the ratio first week/LTD is lower for Xenoblade, meaning that people continued to buy the game after the first week (not so typical for a RPG) while Mistwalker game drained its commercial capacity earlier.

I'm uninformed. What's the Inazuma Eleven Wii game? And how many DS games have been released so far?
Wii game: Inazuma Soccer Slam/Mario Strikers edition
Ds games: three main games + an expanded revision a la Pokemon Emerald for the third game. The second and third game also both had 2 skus (again, think Fire Red/Leaf Green)

[WII] Inazuma Eleven Strikers (Level 5) - 82.109
[PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011 (Konami) - 86.543

It's too bad Strikers didn't remain an RPG, or at least include an RPG-ish 1p campaign or something. I think the game could've been much bigger that way.

I think it's for the best. This way, the game can be considered different enough to get a chance for the fans. It was going to be a spinoff either way. Going a totally different way of gameplay will help it's chances for people who want something new.

And i actually wants to see it more than the regular series. I like soccer games. :)

Random information, but combining MC weekly software sales and Famitsu weekly software share.

Millions of units sold in Famitsu's calendar half-year:

Code:
        2011 2010

PSP	7.65 12% 6.81
NDS	4.66	-54%	10.07
PS3	4.27	-12% 4.83
WII	3.37	-40% 5.62
3DS	1.93
360	0.71	-20% 0.89
PS2	0.12	-79% 0.55
OTH	0.02	-20% 0.03

PSP is the only hardware that is up compared to last year, almost making up for PS3 and PS2 losses:

Code:
		 2010 2011

SONY 12.03 -1%	12.19
NINTENDO 9.95	-37%	15.70
MICROSOFT 0.71	-20% 0.89

OVERALL 22.72	-21%	28.80

Since this is mixing trackers, it shouldn't be taken as fact. From 2009-12-28 to 2010-12-26, Famitsu estimated 62.8 million units while MC 66 million, so their estimates for overall software sales can vary considerably.

PSP will be way down later in the year simply because of the MH effect of last year. Unless Type-0 is a god game.

Even if it is a god game, it won't make up for 3.5 million units.

I think the only system that has a chance of ending 2011 ahead of 2010 is the PS3, even though it is down so far.

Also, the whole industry is going to end the year so low. We're already 6 million down and that doesn't even take in account the 8.5 million sold between D/P and MHP3 last year.

I was referring to hardware. There's no way PSP will match last year's software. Even with Type-0, I kind of doubt a tonne of PSP hardware will be moved.

You posted right after me, I thought it was software. =P

I agree on the hardware front, too (not to mention PSV and 3DS will probably steal all the holiday attention).

Last Story at MK2

An average of 58/100 is a bit low but it can also be read as some loved it, some hated it. I'd still not call it negative especially since the examples I gave are less drastic and the Famitsu review was very good even.

BTW, FFXIII got 59/100 at mk2. Do we expect XIII-2 to sell badly for that reason?

I also think since Xenoblade came out over half a year earlier it should have played a certain part in building the crowd that then bought TLS. And you can easily end up being disappointed with TLS if you prefer something like XB.

Myself I bought XB but didn't really play it although my first impression was fantastic. Too many other games on the pile. TLS I had to play and beat. It's actually very good at what it does, providing an accessible mix of action and strategy. I consider it one of the best games on Wii, easily.

Its battle system is similar to the one in FFXIII in that every battle is unique and in TLS' case even meaningful to the story. But whereas FFXIII, like XB, retains the abstract battle logic typical of traditional RPGs TLS puts much emphasis on terrain and positioning. Strategies are much more concrete and transparent and allow for more varied battle situations without overwhelming the player with abstract systems.

What I don't like about XB (but most RPG fans probably love) is the repetition, wealth of enemies and grinding opportunity. TLS always moves on, never repeating a battle, unless you go back to previous dungeons or summon some weak enemies at gathering points.

The thing is Blue Dragon was Mistwalker's first game. Every Mistwalker game up until The Last Story has not been strongly received. By the time TLS came out, there were already people that didn't care if the game was made by Sakaguchi. With Blue Dragon it was the first, so expectations were high.

Btw, I loved The Last Story. Will rebuy if it comes out in the U.S.

Sequels at not very well received games are almost always affected.
I see why an established franchise like FF would be more resistant to bad word of mouth (especially since every installment tends to be quite different anyway). Although I do think the terrible bug in FFVIII had some part in the series not selling as well anymore. It was the last FF to show an increase over its prequel too, wasn't it?

I don't want TLS to be turned into a series anyway but I think we'll see more of its kind of gameplay. With a high budget presentation or on a console with the right audience it could be doing very well too.

Maybe,Japan is starting being more open to Western games?
Even if GTA was able to do 400k+ on PS2,there's something new in the air.
However,I wouldn't call low the sales NOW,when games are being released continuously.
We have had a week with a game at 80k,one at 60k,one at 50k,two at 30k circa.
These seem to me absolutely not low sales.
Some weeks ago...yeah.With the 10th position at 5k :lol

Well, you have to compare it to previous years.

Look at the numbers in the OP, and then look at the numbers for:
Week 26, 2010: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=400607
Week 26, 2009: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=366915
Week 26, 2008: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=324183

They were all notably better than this year.

Nothing at all surprising about this week:

Red dead redemption: 121,646 66,734 10/10/07
INFAMOUS SCE 39,992 17,179 09/11/05

Infamous had a lot more hype this time around, EDF is a Japanese franchise, 007 is published by Nintendo.
