So, can we say WiiU is now stabilized in between 8 and 10k?
Really disappointing numbers for Yoshi, but this game always felt like an half-hearted attempt, unlike Wooly World...

It did sold 50-60% of stock though. It's not too bad, just not hot-selling.

Never use the word stabilised in this generation, almost every time someone says it said system dips lower a fair bit within the next few weeks.

Smash is a bigger system-seller because it draws more hardcore gamers to the platform, while Mario Kart is more of a casual game with longevity.

Smash Bros Melee: 19,019 > 129,377
Mario Kart Double Dash: 14,702 > 20,587

Mario Kart Wii: 45,749 > 50,155
Smash Bros Brawl: 79,073 > 105,570

Mario Kart 8: 8,858 > 19.031
Smash Bros 4: ?

Who knows if Japan will give a fuck about the Wii U version though. They do love their handhelds.

Part of the reason for disappointing sales is that it is free with a 3DSXL for this and next month

"I just don't see mobile as a competitor to console gaming. It's a completely different experience! They compliment each other, even!"

We outside of Japan are going to be doing a MUCH larger percentage of the heavy lifting of console J-game success from here on out. You know, when it appears.
That report is about "consoles" including 3DS and Vita. And really the west has always done the heavy lifting for Japanese games, the problem is Japanese games are selling less and less each gen in the west too. That trend likely won't be changing either with the collapse of handhelds and console casuals.

Forgot about that, and stock shows that they did expect that yeah. My bad, guess I expected too much.
I hope Hyrule Warriors does well so it shows to Nintendo they must do more collaborations and that marketing (what KT is doing) might help a bit.

Capcom hasn't been bad really. MH3U, RER and MHFG all came to Wii U as well as eShop fare like Ducktales, D&D and a ton of Virtual Console. PS4 isn't exactly blowing that away quite yet with just Strider and an eternally delayed f2p randomized dungeon crawler.

But it could be the game changer!

Monster Strike is currently the #1 top grossing app in Japan, and has single-handedly lead to a 20 times increase of Mixi's stock price. They are now worth over $4 billion USD.

Lots of links explaining the list items at the link.

The action RPG has made Mixi (2121) a US$4 billion company at the Tokyo stock exchange today (US$4.2 billion at 2.30pm Japanese time, to be more exact) – after the share price has risen and risen over the last few days and weeks.

So what happened?

There a couple of factors behind the trend:
  • the game has hit 10 million downloads just a few days ago
  • Monster Strike featured a number of successful gacha-based in-game events in the past few weeks
  • the marketing collaboration with the Godzilla movie proved to be pretty clever
  • another TV ad campaign was started last week
  • partner Tencent opened the official site for the game for the Chinese market yesterday and also started distributing a first test version on Android
  • the biggest competitor, Puzzle & Dragons from GungHo Online Entertainment (3765) went into maintenance today to get a major update (Puzzle & Dragons W)
  • Monster Strike shows no weakness in terms of number of downloads and position in the grossing charts on iOS and Android
...

The stock has roughly risen by a factor of 20 when compared with November 2013: lucky are those companies operating a hit game.

I'm not so sure about that. Bandai Namco's recent Japanese Digimon games have all been targeting an older audience. This one looks like it's for the kids watching Digimon Fusion on TV. There's no anime on the air in Japan right now.

Prope's previous PSP Digimon was also the old series/kids targeted though, unless I'm forgetting something.

I could be wrong about it releasing in Japan though.

No the WiiU's future is looking much darker. What major titles does it have for it in the future......Smash, Zelda ,possibly Animal crossing and not to mention the release of its biggest system seller MK hasn't done much to improve sales.

Meanwhile the PS4 is guaranteed to get MGSV, FFXV, KH3, Yakuza, Tales, GTA, GT, Hot Shots, RE7, alongside support from more niche parties like GUST, Falcom, and NIS.

There's no guarantee any of those titles are going to release on PS4 unless they have a market in the West. It's very likely that MGSV, FFXV, and KH3 will release (eventually) on PS4 as they've announced that and the West at the very least would buy it on there. A Yakuza sequel is also likely thanks to Isshin, but it has no hope in the West. For all we know it could be cross-gen again to afford the game in the first place. Tales is likely (eventually) on the PS4 because the developer has mentioned it, but for now it's still on the PS3 for the near term. I don't think any of those titles even have a release window (does MGSV even?), and most are unannounced, which makes it's hard to say "they're guaranteed" at all. Considered the developers of GT, I wouldn't even know when that'd release and I'm afraid Hot Shots might have declined quite a bit as well. If all those titles do release, it might change the fate of the PS4 a bit. But the PS4 might be so dead in the water (along with the rest of the console industry) that it doesn't do much. We'll see. I think we'll see a PS4 sell maybe like 5-6m after some 8 years, and it'll be sad.

What an underwhelming list to prove your point... Outside of FF and maybe RE7. Why do you expect those titles to have more system selling power than Nintendo's first party stuff? (And Hot Shots, really?)

Both console's futures are dark as shit, I don't see any kind of dramatic recovery for either of them.

That's my argument, though. I'm saying that All-Star Rumble looks like it's aimed at the kids watching the current Digimon series on TV in NA/EU. The recent Digimon games Bandai has been releasing in Japan have been re-imaginings of older titles (Digimon World Re:Digitze, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth) or like Prope's PSP game, a straight adaptation of a 15-year old TV show. When the newest Digimon series aired in Japan, Bandai did put out some tie-in games but they were all on the original DS.

Although I guess the new game can kind of be seen as a re-imagining of these two:

PS1 : Digimon: Rumble Arena ( Bandai ) { 2001-12-06 } - 17,674 / 103,610
PS2 : Digimon: Rumble Arena 2 ( Bandai ) { 2004-07-29 } - 10,311 / 20,748

Those were 2D fighters in the vein of Smash Bros while All-Star Rumble looks more Powerstone.

Either those titles release or all their respective publishers exit home console gaming.

As if most of those publishers aren't far off from doing that already? Would making any of those titles cross-gen suddenly make them "exit home console gaming"? I'm just saying there's no point talking about titles publishers haven't even mentioned yet. Of that list, I think only FFXV, KH3, MGSV are actual known entities, and Baba has mentioned putting Tales on PS4 at some point (right after Zestiria?). That's about it right? Sure, Sony would (hopefully) support the PS4 in Japan with their own Japanese titles, but I just doubt SCEJ's ability to really do anything software wise these days lol... I think their time is better suited towards the Vita if anything.

I don't think it's unfathomable that these companies exit the console space eventually, some already have a foot out the door. I'm just stating that's essentially the outcome of your suggested possibility that these franchises don't release on the PS4.

And as I doubt they're exiting consoles in the near term at least, and these franchises are largely international anyway, your possibility doesn't seem a plausibility.

One of these home systems is globally viable for third party publishers.

When was that announced? Free-to-play games have and will see retail releases.

Oh, I'm sorry. My mistake. I honestly didn't know many F2P games got retail release. It still sounds a little bit different, though from this article:
http://www.siliconera.com/2014/07/29/deep-free-play-necessary-risk-says-capcom/
"But since we will use the free-to-play business model, earnings will probably be small in the first fiscal year regardless of when we start this service because of depreciation expenses."
Read more at
Would the earnings really be that small if it was getting a retail release? Also, what's the point for paying for a retail release when you could download it for free?

The majority still seem to just d/l even when there is a physical release. The physical copies have bonus dlc or cheaper bundles of dlc.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Yeah, there is an audience for retail SKUs of f2p games, when there are DLCs, bonuses, customes and what not. Depending on the success of the game, it could be a good seller. PSO2 on Vita sold...what, 500,000 on PSN and more than 100,000 at retail? If the game is successful, there is an audience.

compare to most of the titles he just mentioned for PS4 (Not ps3 mind you)... yea I think it's a little Bias if you think those titles will be system seller for the ps4.

None of the titles I have listed will sell 100-200k. Obviously, NIS, GUST and Falcom titles are very niche but the point of my post was that PS4 has a lot more notable titles coming out for it in the future than the WiiU and more third party support resulting in a greater possibility for a less barren release schedule.

There's no guarantee any of those titles are going to release on PS4 unless they have a market in the West. Your wrong.

Those titles are guaranteed to come to the PS4. Where else are they going to go? They pretty much represent some of the biggest franchises those JP companies have and a lot of their sales come form the West if not the majority.

Yeah thats just not going to happen, bar some big money hat from Nintendo. SE, Capcom and Konami have pretty much ignored WiiU. All their big titles are coming to PS4 and none have been announced for WiiU. I pretty much expect most PS3 support to carry onto PS4 but with each publisher having a smaller output.

Are we still talking in the context of Japan or WW? What games have these companies announced that would appeal to the current day Japanese market?

There is a clear incentive for western-oriented publishers (including SE and Konami as far as home consoles go) to give zero fucks about the Wii U, because the Wii U is selling like boxed cancer there. In Japan, the PS4 seems to be tracking behind the Wii U (is there a comparative graph?) and will likely do so for quite some time. I expect niche Japan and indies to be the Wii U's last stand for third-party support. I don't see it doing quite as poorly there as you seem to think.

The only Capcom game I can see the WiiU getting is MH4U if Capcom still wants to do those.

Which niche JP developers are you talking about? I don't see any developing on the WiiU.

The indie scene in Japan is kind of barren.

23 weeks:

PS4 : 638 669
PS3 : 844 183
WiiU: 918 768

I was actually going to mention something similar to what Psycho_Mantis is trying to say yesterday.

After multiple of previously big in Japan IPs (one of or the biggest console Nintendo IP in Japan launched not too long ago), the Wii U is currently selling under 10k. The PS4 is selling around 5-6k with one big Japanese game (and it's a cross-gen title). Unless Japan becomes completely uninterested in consoles when the big titles come, the PS4 can only go up from here.

There's a few known big titles Japanese titles coming early 2015 and there's more chances of surprise hit new Western/Japanese IPs (Destiny is apparently one of the most wanted games on Famitsu. GTAV and Destiny could help ease the wait for Bloodborne and MGS5 then FF15/KH3 (lol)). I'm assuming that's what Psycho means when he implied the PS4's future is looking better than the Wii U in Japan.

The indie scene in Japan is kind of barren.

Western indies I mean.

Which niche developer or indie will develop for WiiU? Give me one name. Literally one name.

Level-5, Wonder Flick, for instance. There are plenty of indie games out already (Shovel Knight, WayForward's stuff, Unepic etc.) that are even Wii U exclusive.

I don't really expect anyone to be developing much for anything that is not handheld or mobile until late generation when/if bigger fry like Atlus show up to the party. Sales are the means by which all is revealed ;).

Capcom's already confirmed they're publishing 2 Wii U retail titles this FY so there's going to be at least one more than that.

At this point it's just eShop stuff not worth mentioning, like ASW's Family games or Kemco's smartphone ports. All the bigger publishers (except Konami) are still putting out a title or two annually but even if the platform's sales improve I doubt we'll see much change in 3rd party support.
