I hope they'll be comfortable enough to give a full reveal for X soon though. An actual title and a full trailer would be good for building momentum for the game.

It's always this with Nintendo. They should have Miiverse communities up for these games when they do reveals for them.
I should be complaining about a release date for Bayonetta 2 on its Miiverse community by now. :<

I think this will do good, but it will no way in hell replicate its F2P success like it did on smartphones - additional content won't change this

I can see kids with no smartphones buying this though
Based on art direction alone the game does seem targeted towards younger players who don't have theirown smartphone.

considering how Layton6 sold more or less the same, and how AA5 just surpassed the 320k, people still believe that the crossover wasn't a success?

In a different thread I posted a list of current Nintendo studios, partners and their respective projects. The full list is there but for this here I thought it'd be more interesting to look at the studios with no known current project.

EAD Kyoto Group No. 2 - Mr. Katsuya Eguchi - Undisclosed Project (Animal Crossing U?) - Nintendo Land (November 2012)
EAD Kyoto Group No. 4 - Mr. Hiroyuki Kimura - Undisclosed Project (just released Pikmin 3)

edit: added releasedates of notable previous projects

After ead 4 released nsmb2, nsmbu, and pikmin 3 it will be a long time before we get anything else. Also what was the last game those affiliates made

At least for next level and alpha dream they wont gave games for at least 2 years. So when you start looking at what they could conceivably announce for next year the list is smaller

Iwata: There are more unannounced Wii U titles coming by 2014. There was more info than could be released at E3. Wanted to ease owners’ fears. Don’t want to leave a long gap between announcement/release of new game types that would lessen the impact or allow competitors to copy.

I say, give it till TGS.

I added the release dates for projects that could have significantly slowed down development of "more important" games (i.e. I left out the DSi Ware release of Zelda Four Swords EAD Tokyo 1 did).

You're right though, of all EAD studios it's possible that only EAD 2 has an unannounced game ready for 2014. I have no idea how big Tokyo Group. 1 is since they haven't done any bigger projects since Super Mario Galaxy 1 in 2007 if Wikipedia is to be believed. HAL is also an unknown factor since we don't know if they are involved in Smash Bros. development.

The biggest problem is that many of these companies aren't big enough for retail HD games. I think someone found out that Human Head (Rune, Prey) was working with Nintendo (Metroid Prime 4?) but that would be irrelevant for Japan.

I say, give it till TGS.

Nintendo doesn't attend TGS. I'll be surprised if there are any significant third-party Wii U announcements there either.

They usually do some sort of pre-TGS early September event though. Assuming they have one I would think a full X unveil is possible, plus the big 3rd party guns they have been holding back (and by big guns I mean Taiko Wii U and nothing else).

It's it more common for them to do a post-TGS thing in October instead these days? I don't think there's ever been a specific timing that's specifically tied to TGS. It just takes place in the third quarter.

It sold like 300,000 LTD didn't it? I mean that's not amazing by any means, and maybe slightly disappointing, but certainly nothing to be snuffed at.

The first Nintendo Direct in October 2011 replaced these events that took time around TGS, I think. They had a Wii U Preview Direct and 2 Direct minis in September 2011 though.

Ignore this, I'm wrong

edit: Wiki actually has a nice list of all Directs

I could definitely be wrong, but I'm almost positive the event is usually in September.

[3DS] Hardware (35 days) - 545.000

I wonder what kind of sales WW HD needs to put up to be considered good? 250k LTD? Surely OoT 3D's LTD is out of reach for obvious reasons.

It's varied over the years. I think it's taken place in October in more recent years but I don't really remember.

Yes. And sometimes it didnt happen at all. The thing was pretty inconsistent through the gen, its no safe bet. Also it sounds like they wanna wait for most of this years titles to release before announcing what comes next

We'll have to wait for the next direct to be absolutely certain but I can't decide if Mario Party skipping 2013 is a good idea or not. On one hand, the 3DS has Monster Hunter, Pokémon and to a lesser extent Zelda and Puzzle & Dragons pushing sales for the rest of the year. On the other hand, they already have Smash Bros. and Mario Golf lined up for next year. It might eat into their sales which will be especially problematic for Mario Golf.

Good luck, btw ;)
Thanks. I'll try not to get too off-topic, I needed 100% to finish my degree with the top grade and basically had to write the best ever critique of Wittgenstein. I feel I achieved that but unfortunately I don't believe any Famitsu reviewers will be marking my paper. That grade is probably akin to completing Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on one play through.

I'm intrigued by Mario Party as I suspect even if finished that Iwata may release it in 2014 which to me is a huge mistake as it's the sort of game that excels with holiday sales.

Be good to look at Disney Magic Castle numbers tomorrow. Extremely impressed by its numbers thus far. And Kuma Tomo! The merchandise hits next month so I guess it'll break the 50k barrier!

Nintendo fall conferences:

2012: Sept. 13 (Wii U focused Direct for JP, and Wii U press conference for NA)

2011 was fucking epic and 2012 was amazing, Nintendo Fall Conference is the real E3 for Nintendrones.

I have high expectations for this year's presentation!

Well, you shouldn't try to get your grades the same way pubs do with Famitsu either way :p

All correct except 2009; they didn't have one. :'(

2007 was October 10th, the mighty day MH3 was unveiled to the world! :D

2008's highlights were DSi, Samurai Warriors 3, and Tales of Graces (was kept secret until Dec).

2010 was the uber 3DS blowout, that's when we saw Bomberman 3DS for the first time... :'( As well as BlazBlue, Tales of the Abyss, etc.

2011 in addition also showed MH3G, Mario Tennis Open, Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Awakening, Culdcept, etc.

Last years was MH3G HD, Bayo 2, Black Ops II, Tecmo Koei's line-up, etc.

So purdy neat stuff, as Sammy said, this IS E3 for Nintendo fans! :D Can't wait for this year's!

A game that sold barely 300k, has yet to sell the initial shipment and retailers can't get rid of the remaining stock even with huge price cuts is a failure.

I dont know about complete failure but I cant believe people are trying to spin it as a success. It was a huge underperformer and if anyone haf said those numbers 1.5 years ago it would have seemed very low

Well, at least with Layton vs AA, the general production values should fall within the same scope as a new Layton or AA game, so it'll still be profitable. With SMT x FE I think there's a huge unknown because the WiiU is a far more powerful platform than the DS or 3DS, which is where the SMT and FE games have been on in the last few years. Furthermore, it seems the FE developers have said that a WiiU Fire Emblem game would need to sell 700k to justify development.

That certainly complicates how we look at it. But it's still way too early, given how we know practically nothing about the game.

ok so if a crossover/spinoff/remake sells as a main episode, it underperforms and it's a failure, and so goes for 300k sellers in Japanese market
I'll take note

of course it wasn't a success because of a too big shipment, but stil...

Lol at 700k it will be lucky to reach 4

I don't think Level 5 lost any money with Layton vs AA so it's not really a bomb in that sense but yeah it's a massive underperformer. Same situation as Ni No Kuni DS really.

I think it'll sell at least 9, maybe 10 copies.

Also I'd imagine if Nintendo was doing something Wii U related for a direct they might want to get ahead of 9/9 this year. Or maybe not since Sony will most likely fall flat on their face.

I think the issue with that game (Layton vs. Wright) was they announced it pretty much at the 3DS launch and it was missing in action for a while. 2 years or so in fact. I've always had the suspicion that when you do that people generally get fed up and get a fix elsewhere. People were hyped for that game at launch and it eventually just came and passed by without even a sign of hoopla or excitement. I think both series have been a success but are exhausted. You can see that by both the sales with the latest instalments and how Level5 and Capcom treat each brand today.

Am I wrong? It still sold alright.

I think a lot of the points make sense expect for the first one about it being announced too early. I think for specific ideas like this one, it doesn't matter. Where would people go to get a "fix" elsewhere with regards to this title? If what interested them about the title was the fact that its a Layton and Ace Attorney crossover, there isn't any other game which can deliver that experience. If they want to play a Layton game or an Ace Attorney game, there also weren't any other options. The most recent Layton and Ace Attorney games only came out after the crossover was finally released. :)
