So I see the Medarot series mentioned in these threads a lot and don't know anything about them except Takao is a huge fan... what kind of games are they?
They're a bunch of RPGs molded after Pokemon. In them you build a team of three customizable robots to bring into battle. The battles take place with a rather unique relay system that has the robots run to the centre of the field to launch an attack.
This video can be hard to follow, but it's a good demo of the system in action.
they thought it was a good idea to give the series a ten year hiatus?
They also thought it would be a good idea to release two numbered entries in the same year.
It wasn't a 10 year hiatus. There's a bunch of spinoffs I took out. The series did stop for six years after the game's aimed at the west came out, and a last ditch reboot attempt flopped.
It´s interesting that next week we actually have a somewhat comparable game to MH PSV with DQX 3DS. Both games are the x-th port of an online-subscribtion game based on very popular million selling IPs.
Monster Hunter can be called a handheld franchise, their big successes were on handhelds anyway.
Already looking for excuses? Why do you even feel the need to? It will be a just comparison between games with a similar business modell. Anyway PSO 2 is a Free2Play game on PSV, without a monthly subscription fee but with ingame transactions.
Frontier goes against what made the MH games successful on handhelds. It's an always-online MMO that features no local multiplayer, even on Vita. Monster Hunter became a thing because of its local multiplayer.
The games themselves have a similar business model, but the distribution methods are different enough to make a comparison really difficult. According to this thread, the only way to play Dragon Quest X on 3DS is if you buy the retail release. You can download Monster Hunter Frontier G's client for free on PSN for Vita and PS3. Everyone that's playing DQX on 3DS will have their copy show up on Media Create/Famitsu/Dengeki's lists. That's not the case for MHFG.
It's a strange comparison too. DQX 3DS should sell more. It's the more popular game on the more popular platform.
