Media Create Sales: Week 42, 2013 (Oct 14 - Oct 20)

You can't compare a game that was launched in december with a game that was launched in october.

Well you can't completely discount comparisons either. Obviously it will help the other games have better week to week alligned sales later on but the question is how much difference it can realistically make up. For Pokemon it's too early to call though, I agree.

Even Pokemon X/Y will fall behind Portable 3rd when it comes to short legs. Portable 3rd sold 4m in 6 weeks, according to garaph Pokemon B/W is the only game that sold faster than that (4m in 4 weeks).

Beating Portable 3rd LTD is not an easy task too, according to Famitsu it's at 4.8m+ and to Dengeki top 50 it's already at 5m+ (it charted there just like 3/4 weeks ago actually). Only like 8 games sold more than 5m in entire history of Japan iirc.

Yeah and what Portable 3rd and B/W both have in common is that they launched off of a massive, established userbase for their respective franchises. I remember people also expecting X/Y to open as massively as B/W but that's just ignoring the factors that made such an opening possible in the first place (overall userbase + established userbase).

Is there any website or someone who can support me with the next months releases for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U? I'm using GameFAQs for it right now, but I don't know if something is missing from there.

Yeah, that's why sometimes I'm hesitant to using "k" when talking about numbers, people seem to not get it very often.

But 1000k doesn't make much sense -- why would the thousand mark go up to a thousand when using 1m makes much more sense to describe 1 million in the case of the gif? 100k, 500k, 900k, then 1m - explaining numbers in the million would be like 1,11m.

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data from ASCII Media Works, Inc. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
Among other reasons, Dengeki gives us sales numbers for titles that are too low to debut with numbers on Media Create / Famitsu. So, their liberal reporting allows us to track sales that we wouldn't be able to otherwise.

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
No. All three trackers are inherently trustworthy. However, they have quirks that make some people prefer one over the others:

Media Create:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Media Create Co., Ltd.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sometimes presents sell-through figures
+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, Inc.
+ Tracks about 3,600 retail stores / chains
+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through ranges for all titles
+ Has the most historical data available for GAFfers
+ Tracks download cards
+ Releases first (at the same time as Media Create)
- Does not distinguish between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not report total software sales

Dengeki:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from ASCII Media Works, Inc.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 50 software sales with numbers
+ Top 3 software sales per platform
+ Total software sales per platform
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through figures for a few titles
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Inconsistent data reporting over the years
- Does not track download cards
- Releases nearly 24 hours after Media Create / Famitsu

Barely 1.5k for Rayman. Yup, Bomba Legends alright, though that's hardly surprising (if at all). Still a shame, though.

I like the idea of a cheaper redesign but software support isn't just going to appear out of thin air and Nintendo is almost going it alone on games these days (lack of third party releases). And I don't know how much cheaper they can make a Wii U with the gamepad costs figured in.

A new console with no userbase coming later after Microsoft's and Sony's, after the Wii U failure, won't get software support either though. Nintendo would pretty much need to carry it by itself, just like they're already having to do with the Wii U.

Why?

Sure, it would be another disaster if the next console is another concept less system like the WiiU. But the WiiU sells aren't subpar but nonexistent, supporting such a console would only damage the Nintendo brand.

And it's not you would disappoint many WiiU owners now.

Why would third parties jump to support this console when they'd already have two established userbases? Any ports would sell less than in the competitors and disappear quickly, just like what happened with the Wii U. If we're looking at just Nintendo's effort and concepts by themselves carrying a console, well, they can already do that with the Wii U. I don't see how throwing away money for another console they'd need to support by themselves when they're still catching up with the Wii U's hardware would suddenly improve Nintendo's situation.

The Wii U was a stupid idea, but they really can't throw it away now without just digging an even bigger hole for themselves. Unless they just move away from home consoles.

The only way I could see a quick successor actually improving things for Nintendo would be if they could release a system that basically redefined home consoles, and its concept actually caught on. That isn't something very likely or that they can do just because they need it though. They clearly thought they had something with the Wii U, and yet their core concept here had no impact at all with audiences worldwide.

Nintendo really needs more studios or bigger studios to support both systems.

They are not releasing s steady stream of games for the Wiiu- it s a little frustrating!

Professor Layton still charting, not bad.
(it could have been worse, lol)

Nintendo really needs more studios or bigger studios to support both systems.

They are not releasing s steady stream of games for the Wiiu- it s a little frustrating!

Its been that way since day 1 of the consoles release. Its more than frustrating!!!

What i meant was engine ports and what you just listed proves my point. 80% of those games are existing franchises with existing engines so it was a low risk, high reward endeavor. Now what's funny is now people recognize the PSP as having one of the greatest libraries but back then it was a port machine..

What's an "engine port"? I've never heard of that term.

Well you can't completely discount comparisons either. Obviously it will help the other games have better week to week alligned sales later on but the question is how much difference it can realistically make up. For Pokemon it's too early to call though, I agree.

How in the world is it too early to call for Pokemon but not for MH?

The lack of people talking about Rayman's 1.4K failure is a testament to the apathy surrounding it. Ignored and forgotten, I guess.

Sony is already filling the blinks with their own titles, which they should have done back then. People refuse to see the new ips released and soon to be released on the Vita and that's ok. This is a marathon. Soon those titles will be synonymous with the portable and become expected successful titles available nowhere else.

Also that list really shows the success trajectories for those franchises, notably MH. I mean it really took off after the first and G versions. And then you have GE which did around the same numbers as MHP. At this rate and attach rate of the Vita it could do2 million.

When was PSP a port machine? It was always known as a Monster Hunter machine for Japan and the chart shows that. It's funny you mentioned that GE sold around the same amount as MHP cause with all the MH popularity, GE can't even outsell MHP which was released before MH franchise really took off. By which version of GE do you expect it to sell 2 million copies in Japan? GE 3? GE 4?

On the other hand, when do you expect VITA to have first million seller in Japan?

Beating Portable 3rd LTD is not an easy task too, according to Famitsu it's at 4.8m+ and to Dengeki top 50 it's already at 5m+ (it charted there just like 3/4 weeks ago actually). Only like 8 games sold more than 5m in entire history of Japan iirc.

8 or 9 for Famitsu but every single mainline Pokemon game is on that list.

It bombed everywhere anyway, whether it sells 1.5k or 4k or 10k in Japan makes no difference.

Why?

Sure, it would be another disaster if the next console is another concept less system like the WiiU. But the WiiU sells aren't subpar but nonexistent, supporting such a console would only damage the Nintendo brand.

And it's not you would disappoint many WiiU owners now.

I think the concern there is, the people that own a WiiU now are probably mostly made up of the Nintendo faithful. Pissing off your most loyal of customers seems like a bad idea. Sure, a lot of them would buy the next Nintendo console anyway, but I'm sure a significant portion would feel burned.

MC Top 2012

Origins PS3 - 1,714 / 5,706
Origins PSV - 1,364 / 4,853

Legends WIU - 1,435 / ? (Dengeki)

Now let's talk about something relevant. :p

Almost all of those games are ports of ps2 games. They were able to successfully port thoses engines over to the psp.

Really? MH is a damn port in itself. Almost all of the games listed were offshoots of existing games on ps2.

GE 2 could be it's million seller. GE was not push anywhere near as much as MH by Sony so that success that you speak of with MH was a joint effort with Capcom and Sony.

Wii U needs to sell 159,664 more units to beat last year's total units sold. That's an average of 15,966 units a week for the remaining year.

Do you think it can do it?

With the upcoming bundles and holiday season, it might. Though I'm not holding my breath quite yet

Looks like a likely total just for December, to me.

Off topic, but does this annoy anyone else? The Vita's screen is 540p. That's not HD.

Is everything over 480 considered HD?

Edit:
PAL SD is 576i, so maybe it should be Enhanced Definition? Final Fantasy X ED.

I'm always amused when people conclude by wanting the game on PS3 or Xbone or PS4. It suggests that their purpose isn't really the best graphics or best networking or whatever, it's just that they personally prefer consoles and would rather all games be made for them and not for handhelds or iOS or even PC.

Speaking for me personally, it's not the tech. It's the screen. I HATE playing games on tiny screens. I want to use my TV. Not a 5" handheld, not a phone, not a 10" tablet, not even a monitor (although I use my TV for my PC, not everyone does). My glorious TV.

So, of course, I'm very excited about the Vita TV, and I'm never going to stop yelling about a DS (now 3DS) Player.

Yeah, but ED stands for something else, too...maybe appropriate for Final Fantasy's feminine guys. ;p

It's supposedly called qHD. I guess next to the 3DS XL's screen everyone thinks of the Vita's as HD.

Yeah, officially, it's "qHD", meaning "quarter high definition", literally one-quarter of full HD (1080p). So calling a game HD when it's qHD is like calling a hamburger "The Big Pound Burger" when it's a quarter pounder.

Maybe it was part of the original exclusive deal.
I believe it was. Rayman even had a release date in the beginning of the year, before Ubisoft pulling out. I think Nintendo just released Rayman to get off of it. Every other game published by Nintendo had ads. Rayman was just released and that was it.

But i'm actually surprised it charted.

God the Wii U is such a disaster. I wonder what Nintendo's plan out of this is? They need to eke a profit out of the Wii U then launch a new home console pronto or get out of the console business all together. I don't think they can leave a stinker like that on the market any longer than absolutely necessary.

I'm certain this isn't Nintendo's plan, but I think it could work:

1. Rename the Wii U to the Wii 2. Everyone thinks the Wii U is a controller, anyway.
2. Rename the Gamepad to "Wii U", which is what everyone thinks it already is.
3. Stop including the Gamepad, and stop using it for anything except off-screen play, so it becomes unnecessary. Pack in a Wii Remote and Pro Controller.
4. Mark the 3 games that require the Gamepad as such.
5. Sell the Gamepad separately, and/or in a bundle with Nintendo Land.
6. Drastically drop the Wii 2's price.
7. Make a game or two.
8. Launch the Wii 2 with a bunch of marketing.

edit: oops, I forgot, this template requires:

9. ????
10. Profit!

Well, it's qHD, so technically it is a form of HD. But still, its mostly a commercial choice. I think the reason most Vita games that carry the "HD" part are called so to avoid confusion, especially if they are multiplat releases and are the exact same games (FFX/X-2 HD and MGS HD Collection come to mind as examples).

Speaking for me personally, it's not the tech. It's the screen. I HATE playing games on tiny screens. I want to use my TV. Not a 5" handheld, not a phone, not a 10" tablet, not even a monitor (although I use my TV for my PC, not everyone does). My glorious TV.

In my case it is the opposite. I personally prefer portables. The experience for me is much more intimate and convenient. Not to mention that for many others, having a big screen TV always at their disposal is not always an option (I have one at home but the rest of the family uses it most of the day for example).

--------------------

Back on topic. I would say the Wii U could easily make past its last year's sales when Mario releases, but to be honest, its situation is so dire that I can't be sure of anything anymore.

Vita's first million seller? I'd say GE2, but I don't believe so since it is launching also on the PSP.

Everyone knows the reality of the wii u, its one and done. Bombas are not going to shock or surprise anyone.

I know...but unlike other bombas / expected bombas, very few people talked about Rayman Legends...complete apathy about it's bomba-ness.

That's why I made that comment. ;-)
