The first week of the year is often results in slight bumps for Sony.How can you replace a system when you are not compatible with any retail games of your predecessor ?

Perhaps I've misread - I thought the post-Christmas week was traditionally better for Sony. Maybe it was the first week of the New Year instead.

However, I've read in the other thread IIRC that on January 2nd there's $$$$. And, effectively, seeing what happened in the past, every time week 1 had January 2nd included, there have been a rise compared to the precedent week.

Seriously though, I read in the comments at Eurogamer's article about this that it might've been better for Sony to launch in the west first, since most launch games is very western centric, while waiting for MH and FF or whatever before launching in Japan. I kind of agree with that. I think western gamers will be perfectly happy with the Vita launch line up so you would probably mostly have heard positive things about it directly after launch compared to now when every sales report gets a negative spin.
It's generally not a good sign, no.
Part of it is down to the continued strength of the PSP. But the people buying a PSP now aren't the sort who tend to buy hardware at launch, so it really says more about the Vita's inability thus far in converting existing PSP owners into Vita owners.

I always wondered why this is being said as a negative thing. I see "Playstation family" as Sony's whole gaming devision, so if that in total does well, why does it matter if they word it like that?

Didn't know about the GBA and PS2, but as Exterminieren and Erethian have pointed out, the only time that the DS outsold the DS3 was just before the price cut back in August. Either way I should probably get my ignorant ass out of this thread.
Sony doesn't actually have a gaming division in their breakdowns. They just have Networked Entertainment which includes their PCs, cellphones (with the purchase of Sony Ericsson), tablets, games etc. It's why seeing if SCE is profitable is difficult now.

I wonder how long Sony will keep making them? It is still popular here in Poland and I bet it sells well in other countries where people have smaller disposable incomes.

In this case imagine Sony's PR saying something like "Playstation family saw growth of X% over last year." What's the problem? Well in the last year "Playstation Family" had a "baby" that is already contributing to the number.
In other words it's a way of obfuscating what people actually care about.
Er...no, it's because one or several of the devices are doing bad, but alltogether it shows growth, thanks to one device. I have no idea about their Japanese PR, but their NPD PR are always pathetic, not showing numbers and consists of a few sentences.
