I wonder how it would feel to be in an adventure with no place to call home (hub). I think it would be interesting. And quests, well I'm tired of fromsoft quests where nothing makes sense and invisible triggers dictate everything without rhyme or reason.
Oh okay, because I read it in a more extreme manner, like "get rid of hubs because they're awful" and "get rid of quests because they're too fetchy". I don't know if there's any reason for hubs other than having specific features and being 'cool'.

Honestly, it's not hard to have an RPG without a hub, but it definitely is hard without quests. You can't really call a game an "RPG" if it doesn't have a single quest; I think From Soft has room for improvement in this area and could create great quests if they wanted to.

what quests are those? From games are known for their amazing storytelling, and the various quests are a huge part of that. "without rhyme or reason" what? every quest i've played has had some story element, some player, or character unique to that environment, some item description leading to it, etc. From is good at planning this out. the worlds are well planned out and quests happen naturally. they will probably carry this style of storytelling on.

Sekiro made a few strides towards modern gaming conventions but I don't think we will be seeing Quest Markers any time soon. a hub would be nice, i'm sure there will be a number, it is supposed to take place over a variety of kingdoms. as for getting quests, like anything in these games you kind of have to pay attention, and put together things in the story. with GRRM writing all the backstory for them, they can crank out tons and tons of lore, characters, etc. from which to drive quests.

I never actually thought/considered/realised before that Souls games don't have "quests" ie a quest log etc mmh.

There's a special place in hell for anyone who suggests introducing quest markers

World tendency springs to mind. Gate open, orange people attack, someone with a meat cleaver. Next time .. gate closed .. I have no idea .. was it lost in translation ?
 
I think everyone on Earth was expecting Elden Ring to basically be Game of Souls.
Miyazaki hasn't made a game which doesn't fundamentally play like Souls since Demons' Souls.

Sekiro has the best gameplay of any From game, but I can definitely see why they're not using it as their new go to design. Dark Souls combat is just easier to adapt.
I wouldn't say DarkSouls combat is easier. It's just that you are not forced to git gud! You can summon for help and level up to take the edge off.

Yeah, plus you have far more defensive options and if all else fails, you can always grind up a few levels. Sekiro gives you no choice, you either fully get the mechanics or you're boned and could write for Polygon about how unfair it is.

They are really going to have to prove to me that the open world adds to the game. I hope it is not just added fluff like almost every other open world game, and that the core gameplay suffers for it.

FromSoft don't have to prove anything.
EldenRing is automatically going to win.

Did that to me at the beginning. You'll pick up the pace and techniques later on
Its a very rewarding and satisfying when you progress.
Is it just me or did you guys find 95% of the techniques to be less effective then just going with the default attacking and defending pattern. Like I'd learn the senpou temple techniques...try em out and useually they'd end up with me taking unnecessary damage and using up spirits I could have used for my prosthetics. Even on the final boss, I used no techniques or prosthetics...just sword and blocking.

I just hope it's not like Sekiro. The game kicked my ass and not in a fun way. I put it down and don't plan on picking it up.

I managed to make it to the final boss in sekiro and I can not beat him. I had to quit playing it because I can't do it. Which was quite disappointing as I loved the game and really enjoyed it but I just can't do it and the last guy made me stop having fun.

But I really enjoyed the game up till then and I was glad I played it. I guess I need to just resign myself to it truly being over and YouTube the ending.

I just hope elden has some sort of online support for it. Much as I love the souls games I can't do some areas or bosses on my own and it's great to call in help for those impossible for me situations.

Yeah I tried to like it I really did. I just couldn’t catch on. I’m playing the DS remaster and I have beat S&O they say their the hardest boss. No help.

Yeah, it's an interesting fight but it was also the point where I stopped having any fun at all and was not enjoying it and it made me not want to play.

My problem was I sucked at the rest of the bosses. I just kept trying different things until I'd stumble into the right pattern or situation or my mind was just in the right zone at the right time. But regardless of how many times I tried on him nothing ever came together. I stopped counting deaths in the 40s and quit probably after another 20. Of course I also suck at patterns and rhythms in games.

The only other time I'd had so much just soul crushing frustration was from the 4 knights in ds1 but I could still call for help.

It felt good to beat him due to the difficulty but I didn't find the fight something so dynamic and exceptional. It was basically you fighting all these bosses, paying attention to their choreographhed little repetitious moves and acting accordingly but if you slip up your toast. It was a chore, oddly enough he wasn't the hardest boss for me either.
