Minecraft dev makes $100m in licensing alone, marks Brazil as a possible target for growth in 2013

Mojang brought in a reported revenue of almost $240 million in 2012, with around $100 million coming from license fees.

The information, originally reported by IT24.se, was passed to GamesIndustry International by Thomas Arnroth, a Swedish author who has followed the company for a year for his book, A Year With Mojang: Minecraft Behind The Scenes. According to Arnroth, Mojang turned over SEK1.5 billion ($237.7m) last year, including SEK640 million ($101.4m) in licensing fees and SEK580 million ($92m) in pre-tax profits.

"It's almost hard to grasp," said Mojang CEO Carl Manneh in an interview with Arnroth. "It's easy to become a bit blind working at Mojang. Everything's happening so fast and it's going so well. One almost needs to pinch oneself to know it's for real.

"When we started Mojang in 2010 we made a budget for the first year. Three months later we just trashed it - it became totally irrelevant. We still have the same feeling now. There simply are no good ways to forecast how much money we are going to make.

While the huge success of Minecraft continues to surprise, Manneh believes there is potential for future growth in a number of global markets, and he expects the company to make progress in that area in the coming year. Manneh singled out Brazil in this regard, which is Minecraft's third largest territory in terms of number of players, but a very tough market for online monetisation due to a lack of credit cards.

"Minecraft is a power of its own now - it's just rolling," he said. "We have so many markets where we are not very strong yet, where many play Minecraft but few have bought it simply because you can't use our online payment solution there. That's something we'll get our hands to during 2013."

That Mojang had enjoyed a strong 2012 was already well understood. Last month, the developer revealed that it had sold 15 million units of Minecraft in 2012 across its PC, console and mobile versions.

So I hear Minecraft is pretty popular.

I wish Notch worked faster on 0x10c, but I guess he has no real motivation to, he's already made for life. That game could be massive too if it fulfils the promise of its scope.

they could just stop working if they wanted. crazy. especially when u know from where they were coming from. (watch the documentary!!)

It's all downhill from here. They are one of the most successful studios of all time, but there's just no way Mojang releases anything that even approaches the popularity of Minecraft.

They've got all kinds of moichendising for the minecraft stuff.

Seriously, watching any minecon video shows off all kinds of minecraft stuff. Officially licensing that stuff like the angry birds company did = instant money printing.

Words cannot describe my jealousy...Mojang consists of what? Like 10 people? All from regular people backgrounds? God damn, wish I could come up with an idea that just...takes off like wildfire, completely out of nowhere, earning me enough money for 10 lifetimes...

Honestly if I were Notch, I would just leave the company and build myself a mansion on the moon.

It's such a simple concept but a lot deeper than it looks on the surface.

Fucking Creepers.

He enjoys making games, only after the Minecraft success he can make anything he wants in any way he wants. Pretty sweet deal aswell if you ask me.

Stop production on ALL major consoles and games, move all development teams to mobile and apps, start cranking out the angry birds and slot machine games. That's clearly where the market is. Minimum effort and maximum gain.

I don't get the minecraft lovedfest nor retro gaming. Probably, because I am to much of a graphic whore. And, if I was the owner, time to sale and cash in. It's downhill from here on out.

Ummm, the majority of great games came out before this generation, y'know? Most good games don't just turn to shit when they're graphics get outdated.

Well maybe Donkey Kong Country...

Are you comparing Angry Birds and generic slot machine games to Minecraft?

Well deserved!

Minecraft can be played in so many ways, my kids are playing different mods every week, when they aren´t creating stuff with other kids online or watching Minecraft on YouTube.

But that's the beauty of it.

Mojang isn't a billion dollar publisher that has to continue justifying its value by cranking out 10 million sellers every season. They're continuing to make more projects pretty much because they want to. It's like ten guys.

So from here on out, they basically just get even more extra money, however much it is, for making stuff they'd be doing anyway in their free time if they "retired".

Most of those "great" games I have probably already played and wouldn't want to again. I tried playing same of my favorite old games, but usually, end up quitting fast. For example, my favorite Jrpg is Phantasy Star I, but I sure wouldn't play it again.

bring it for wii u notch, you know you want that money.
I'd buy it again. Touchscreen building/mining for creative mode? Hell yeah sign me up.

It's really the lego of this generation. You can create, share, and most importantly destroy.^^ Loved tearing down my Lego Tech creations to make an even more outlandish mechanism as a kid.

Goes to show that all those cynical people thinking that kids would simply swallow everything that is marketed at them are dead wrong. How long till a Minecraft Theme Park?

Dat Microsoft money paying for console exclusivity. That game is killing it on the Xbox.

I wonder how long the deal is and if Microsoft will be trying to get in on Notch's new game for the next Xbox

Huh? What does any of that have to do with Minecraft?

I wonder how much Nintendo makes off of merchandising the Mario Brand, its way more popular than the Minecraft stuff.

I'm not sure that's actually true, to be honest. Among kids of all ages I see a lot more Minecraft merchandise than Mario merchandise. Literally, I see 4-5 year old kids wearing creeper t-shirts.

I guess it depends where, up here in Canada I see way more Mario T-shirts at Wal-Mart, as well as those bubble gum dispensing machines giving out Mario themed toys.

It's really cool to see a game like Minecraft doing really, really well.
This, a thousand times. I couldn't be happier about the fact.

I'd like to see Notch time-travel from 2009 to this very day and see his reaction upon reading the OP news bit. I don't think there's a reaction GIF that would do justice to it.
