More than 20 years later, I still find Half-Life scarier than most "true" horror games.

I don't know why that is. So many titles are made with the idea of being frightening to the point that everything else takes a backseat.

Not here. This game doesn't go out of its way with long buildups, elaborately staged jumpscares, or cheap tricks that involve taking the control away from the player. Not to mention that you're literally armed to the teeth most of the time.

Replaying the vanilla version of HL1 (1998) is still a blast, yet also terrifying at times. And the game does it almost without efforts.

These fuckers make me jump out of my seat every time they spawn near me or start spitting their toxic goo from a distance:

Not to mention the panic attack when you get caught by those freaks:

The tentacles boss in the blast pit was great, awesome use of a level themes around danger/horror (kinda). There was one memorable area in the office section that was spooky (flooding, dark parts, headcrabs and scientists).
