My files disappeared from my LaCie external hard drive.

A quick Google search suggests that the files might still be there and that the problem is a damaged catalog. A responding person suggested the use of Diskwarrior software, which can repair the problem. That seems to be a Mac-only program, however. Anyone have recommendations for similar PC software? Thanks.

It's not really a Mac or PC problem...hard drive partitions get messed up no matter what. For PC, the only thing I know of is Ontrack's software...which is around $450 if you were to buy it.

(Yes, there is plenty of other software out there...some probably free. I'm pretty sure Ontrack is considered to be professional grade, though).

* NTFS Undelete ; >> free software, but your hard drive must be NTFS... I never tried the others :p
* PC Inspector File Recovery ;
* Recuva ;
* Restoration ;
* SoftPerfect File Recovery.

o shit oshit I have a Lacie too.

OP, how did you use this HD? Was it on all the time?
Don't be paranoid I use a Lacie and have for 2 years, its never been turned off and it still runs like a charm.

I had something similar happen with a LaCie at work.

I ended up popping off the external case and putting the drive into my PC. Turned out that everything was fine with the drive and the files, but something on the firewire interface board was fucked and causing my drive to appear faulty.

I vote that you remove the casing and install the drive into your PC tower.

If you've no tower PC on which to preform maintenance for your laptop and external parts, I suggest you buy yourself one.

You can get a cheap tower PC with no OS installed on it.
Then, install Windows XP Professional to it.
Install your other software, specifically one or several of the suggested apps:
Ontrack
NTFS Indelete
Easy Recovery Professional
GetDataBack
and my suggestion, SpinRite 6.0 Release 1

Cheap tower PCs with no pre-installed OS can be found at www.pricewatch.com

specifically this link:

You can use any old monitor.

No one should lead a digital life on only a laptop.
