Haven't watched any Jets games but also can it be fair to say Laine maybe he's not fully 100% yet from the concussion?

I know I've seen tons of times where players are fine after a concussion but it still takes them a while to really feel normal again.

Could be the schedule catching up with him as well. This years schedule was designed by crazy people and intended for lunatics.

Tbh he's always been insufferable. I can see realizing that now that he's gone full-blown Leafs fanboy though. He was just as irritating as a snarky "I know more than you" Leafs detractor too.
True, just now that he's with this site he doesn't have to hide the snark and obvious bias, which is a shame because he can make some decent points. He falls prey to the douchey attitude a lot of the stat guys carry.

What is with your obsession with following Toronto media then complaining that they're going on about Toronto? This is a serious question, because you seem to do this often. One would think at a certain point the fact that the Athletic Toronto reports on Toronto sports would clue you into the fact that they're going to be talking about Toronto?

You know, all that bias he hid while he was the Leafs Beat reporter for the Globe.

lol guys Mirtle isn't even a Leafs fan he was following the Sabres or the Devils or some team before he got a job covering the Leafs because that was available to him at the globe and mail

and even if he was, it's called the Athletic Toronto for a reason

My obsession with Toronto media? Please enlighten me of this obsession. Mirtle was a reputable hockey writer for the Globe and Mail that actually had interesting analysis every so often for the entire NHL not just the Leafs, now that he's gone to his new site he gets paid to pump the Leafs tires and it shows in his work which is disappointing. If you consider that an obsession, good for you.

What better way to build a subscriber base then to try and get tons of Leafs fans to sign up? Toronto has the largest population so it only makes sense to have more articles about them to try and grow the base.

I don't have the kind of time Soc has, but if you're surprised at all that the editor of The Athletic Toronto spends most of his working time on Toronto based teams I don't know what to tell you. Here's some other facts that might shock you: Water is wet, hot things will burn you, and those little wiggly things at the end of your hand? They're called fingers!

Maybe if it does well they'll start up an Athletic Montreal that focuses on all those Montreal sports teams -- oh yeah the Habs.

I'm not surprised that his focus is there, I'm surprised in how much of a shill he's become. His writing has become almost embarrassing and that's unfortunate because hockey media in general is a joke and he put out some good analysis. You seem really upset, you must be a relative or Mirtles, I apologize for being disappointed in losing one of the few decent writers in hockey media.

I've noticed that Mirtle's writing has invoked more statistical analysis but I guess there is too much of #fakestats.

In addition, I imagine the regimes of the past compared to this current one might seem that he's writing in some sort of biased way but the Leafs didn't have guys like Marner or Matthews or Nylander playing.

So the Leafs are a better team this year than last, which most sane people would understand is going to result in more positive coverage. Unless you're Red_Man and this is a Toronto media conspiracy to not talk about the Habs.

You know a shill actually refers to someone who is a plant from an organization. I just want to be clear about what you're saying here.

ITT red doesn't understand 17% of Canada lives in toronto, 25% in the greater golden horseshoe and 36% in Ontario

And if you count Quebec as a primary French market. English media coverage then turns to 25% in toronto, 37.5% in Greater golden horseshoe and 54% in Ontario.

Add into the large following in the other provinces due to population movement and it is really understandable why things are the way they are.

For perspective, the greater golden horseshoe has around the same amount of people as Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba combined.

Toronto market is just incredibly massive for a small country

Hmm last few Mirtles articles from The Athletic Toronto:

The power and grace behind the incredible success of Blues star Vladimir Tarasenko - an article talking about Tarasenko and his rise as a great player

Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner continue assault on Leafs record book - article outlining how Matthews and Marner are doing historic things not just for Leafs rookies but among rookies all time.

Breaking down the Maple Leafs defensive disaster on Long Island - talking about how awful the Leafs were against the Islanders

Are the Maple Leafs struggling to beat good teams? - Yes they are and it's something this group needs to work on.

Mailbag Round 4: The Leafs are (likely) in for a boring trade deadline folks - answering questions from fans.

Totally insufferable out here y'all once you pay for the subscription, log in and then read all the articles behind the paywall.

Throw all that shit out the window. The fact is when you start The Athletic app it asks you to pick either Chicago or Toronto, go figure the one you pick gives you only stories about either Chicago or Toronto sports teams. Now combine that fact with the Leafs this season performing well above expectations and you have positive Leafs articles. Nobody had the Leafs in a playoff spot this season (OK nobody except Dopey). What's Mirtle supposed to write about, how shit the Leafs are as they're over-performing what everyone expected?

When have I ever complained about the lack of exposure the Habs get from the media? If anything they already get too much. I'm literally criticizing his writing and and his regression as a writer, I actually enjoy reading up on other teams, I didn't realize I was in the James Mirtle OT.

This is literally the largest loaf you've ever tried to pinch off on the board. You're criticizing Mirtle's regression as a writer? Sure. You hate the content of his articles, I get that since they're heavily focused on the Leafs and positive aspects of their game. But his overall skills as a writer? C'mon man, you know this is total BS at this point.

Mirtle adopted the snarky internet guy persona when he left the Globe, but you only see this on Twitter.

Otherwise, the biggest difference that I can see is that (1) the Leafs aren't a complete disaster anymore and (2) he's writing shorter articles and posts to fit the format of his site.

Something tells me the former is why non-Leafs fans might have decided that he's regressed as a writer, rather than the latter.

Honestly Mirtle has always bugged me. He has that smug, snarky persona that he knows a lot more than you do, You're right it generally only exists on Twitter, maybe he does it to gain more followers, because nothing ropes people in like a little confrontation. The whole "no press is bad press" idea.

I swear i've heard that at least 15 times in the past 27 years of my life

It's gonna be real awesome around here when the Leafs are a contending team and the Habs are a complete mess and in rebuild mode. This will happen sooner than you believe.

Damn, I missed a real gud argument on James 'The Turtle' Mirtle this morning

This For Honor game sucks wow what shit combat.

Is 90% of it button mashing square on the controller?

It always looked like to me to that it would be a western AAA budget dynasty warriors.

pretty sure that also always followed the first statement

i'm actually sorta excited to see just how deep the ironic smugness will go, i'm wondering if Leafs fans can top Cubs fans from last year

I find that all these fan-blog guys are like that on Twitter. Jays, Leafs etc.

For using the search function and my own memory. I'll lean into that, but it takes practically no time. Also a better course of action than entering a half hour debate with Red_Man about James Mirtle.

I woke up with a chip on my shoulder today apparently. Now I'm arguing on twitter with my bandmate about Vince Li.
