Nintendo Q2 FY 24/25 Earnings Release: Hardware 2.62m LTD 146.04m. Zelda:EOW 2.58m

It needs to beat 155M, not that figure Jim Ryan threw out to move the goalposts because he knew what was coming.
Sony stopped revealing PS2 numbers when the console was still in stores and in production as far as i know.

It has been known for a while the console has sold 160M

Jim didn't just create the narrative like that unless the poor guy just asked for this console to exist with that random number, lmao.

They also stopped announcing PS3 sales at 84M and the console ended up selling around 88M:

They should remaster Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch 2. It would probably still sell 20 million.

Obviously I am kidding, and obviously they will launch with a new Mario Kart.

Yeah at this point I think is pretty obvious why Nintendo hasn't announced the next switch.
They keep printing money.

I still have a couple games I will play on my switch.

Hm, fascinating, it seems Nintendo shipped more Switches than last year in Americas, in this quarter
Confused as Circana's sold data never reported YoY positives. Maybe stocking for the holidays in advance?

Nintendo is gunning for the PS2. Only 10 million left.
No they are not. If they were they would lower the price and blow past it. Remember it's $350 2024 dollars bs $99 90s dollars.

But what nuntendo is doing is destroying every Sony and Ms first party sells. Lots of games past 10 - 20 million mark.

Which was from April 2012 to March 2013, when the 3DS was 1 to 2 years old, so nothing surprising.
The NDS was just such a behemoth and is one of the only systems (thus far) to ever reach for Ps2.

Ps2 apparently sold 13.7M in FY8 (around 2007/2008(?)) and by that point Ps3 had been out for 1-2 years as well.

Looks like PS2 might be safe after all. Nintendo have historically abandoned their consoles pretty soon after the successor's launch.

They definitely won’t abandon a user base of +150M. Switch will be getting cross-gen games throughout 2025 I’d assume. The first party lineup is already pretty strong with Metroid Prime 4, DKC, Xenoblade X, Pokemon Legends ZA.

Even 3DS, which “only” sold half of the current Switch numbers, sold around 10M units after the Switch had released, between 2018 and 2021.

Switch is very likely to be chugging along for years after Switch 2 is out.

For the current fiscal year Nintendo have modified their Switch forecast from 13.5 million down to 12.5 million for hardware and 165 million down to 160 million for software.

Which means they aren't cutting the price this fiscal year. Insane.

Yes, they meanwhile also sell games like Mario Kart 8 and more for ~35 Euro.

Yep, down here in Argentina we have been seeing many Chinese copies as well. All legitimate (as far as I know you can't bootleg Switch games). To put an example the Chinese version of Super Mario 3D All Stars appeared around at around 60 bucks when American copies are sold for over 100. Some time ago I bought the Chinese version of Etrian Odyssey HD Collection because it was the only version with English subs.

More official than the CEO's info?
That isn't sales numbers though. Whatever the number sold is, it is definitely below the number produced. Some would be replacements for unfixable warranty units, some wouldn't have been sold but distributed through other channels.

If my memory serves me right, they sold 146M without official price cuts? as far as I remember PS2 price are slashed to get that numbers. Switch sales profit must be very strong, could be the strongest.

They need to dip into their war chest and offer Switch OLEDs at $249 for Christmas. They're still bringing the heat with software.

Mario Kart is the ultimate game of all time along with GTAV.

Strange enough, even with 2 SKU Pokemon is getting beating somehow for others games. What was a CoD game from Nintendo from time to time, Scarlet and Violet are getting beat even by their previous Sword and Shield LOL.

Nintendo Switch PRO can't get soon enough.

Scarlet Violet didn't hit as harder as the last versions, which were also terrible in terms of content. Didn't even beat Mario Odyssey(2 versions against one and bundles).
I guess they need a better strategy rather than relly on "it's Pokemon" brand name and fuck the rest.

Imagine if Mario Kart was a multi format game. It would probably outsell GTA!

Ps2 numbers should be more than doable. If Nintendo, greedy fuckers that they are, halved the price of it and launched a classic range of Switch best sellers for $20 or so they'd probably end up selling almost 200m of the things. Hell I'd buy another just to have one for when the battery eventually dies in my launch model.

If they beat the PS2 that will be super impressive. Even more impresseive, because the PS2 was produced for 12 years + had enourmous price cuts and Switch currently just for 7 years without any notable price cut.
Plus, ps2 optic sensor was a pos and always braking, I knew lot of people that had 2 or 3 ps2, and it was used as a DVD player as well, and massive pirate dvds.

That makes no sense. PS4 sold incredibly well and no one expected it to reach +170M (PS3+PSP) just because they stopped with the portable line.

Not to mention overlap etc. Both DS and Wii were sold to identical demographics and people will have owned both.

Just look at the chart, NDS FY8 was 2.35M, Wii FY8 was 0.45M, a combined of 2.8M. Switch has not only already beaten that combined number. It is expected to sell 12.5M in the same period. More than 4x the consolidated sales of Wii and NDS.
PS4 wasn’t a console/portable hybrid and Sony hadn’t developed a massive portable following over the course of 4 generations (5 if you count game boy color).

Also, comparing distinct fiscal periods between the hybrid console and individual console and portable devices seems a little apples and oranges unless you are trying to articulate the longevity of the Switch. (Which is undoubtedly impressive — by the way) Still, it’s too often ignored that Nintendo had to cannibalize a portion of its market for the Switch to sell as many total units as it has.

Looks like the Switch is well on its way to crush the PS2's numbers before long. Well done. A perfect case study as to how differentiation can work wonders in business.

I agree with the posts above about Nintendo having to cannibalise its own audience for this to work though. It was a huge, huge gamble.

If Sony goes the same route with the PS6.. then I think we could genuinely see the first generation of games devices to break 200 million units sold.

Switch is already past PS2 by a decent margin if we consider sales up to FY8.
PS2 survived for 5 more years with a price tag that allowed it to be impulse buy in the richest countries, plus it was sold in markets where gaming hardware is a luxury.
Switch probably won’t pass PS2’s lifetime sales. But considering it never had an official price cut and that it wasn’t the best bang-for-buck media player of its time, it did a remarkable job.
It really is, almost impossible, that the switch won't pass the PS2. That's done. The conversation is when now.

Yes, but the DS exploded in the way it did much faster than PS2. DS was not on the market 12 years later.

Maybe because people disagree with that notion?

I don’t think WiiU would have suddenly been booming had they never released the 3DS, just because the GamePad can be used as a portable at home. It’d still be a humongous failure.

Switch is a huge anomaly. I’d be very surprised if the “Switch 2” reach anywhere close to these heights personally, both in terms of hardware and software.
