Nintendo’s first post-Switch 2 Nintendo Direct Treehouse livestream is being flooded with angry comments from users calling on the company to "DROP THE PRICE."
A cursory glance at the YouTube chat for the stream shows a flood of complaints about the pricing of Nintendo’s move to the next-generation, which includes the $449.99 Switch 2 and, perhaps most controversially, the jump to $79.99 for Mario Kart World.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 system itself will retail for $449.99, a bundle is also available with Mario Kart World included for $499.99, saving $30 on the price of the game.
Nintendo has even come under fire for charging for the Switch 2 tutorial video game experience, Welcome Tour, which fans have said should be a free pack-in. Astro's Playroom, for example, comes pre-installed on every PlayStation 5 console, serving additionally as a free tech demo for the DualSense controller.
The shock at Nintendo’s pricing is now spilling over into the Treehouse livestream, although the presenters have so far, perhaps understandably, ignored the chat. It seems likely that Nintendo will face this sort of thing from the video game community from now on, piling the pressure on the company to address the complaints.

I think the price of the console is fine.

But the price of the software is absolutely fucking ridiculous...

As of right now Kirby is more expensive than GTA VI.

And BOTW is more expensive than when it launched 8 years ago.

They are also the first company to charge $80 for a game and they are the first company to charge $90 for a game.

The economy for many people are in the toilet right now. Every fucking company under the sun is price gouging like there is no tomorrow. They are getting insanely greedy and people are fucking fed up with it.
Yup. The price gouging always leads to the product always being more expensive even after the justification fit the increase in price disappears.

Wage stagnation and suppression have been going on my whole life; that's why people are pissed not because gaming is a luxury hobby.

Add 10% minimum for tariffs on all imports and 10-30% on all domestic prices for greed and we will be buying a lot less shit. Probably good for under budget public landfills in a few years.

Gaming is not a luxury hobby.
Most of us here are enthusiasts and get caught up in the "well I can afford it so..." mentality. Some people forget that the mass market consumer is the mom or dad providing a way to entertain their kids. I have no idea how the market is going to shake out as prices keep climbing but I expect leaving behind the casual/mass market gamers will have a negative impact.

People were having a hard enough time adjusting to $70, and Nintendo just felt like adding an additional $10 for Mario Kart World, lmao.

It is pretty gross. Even more so for rereleases/upgraded titles. I mean, I get that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are receiving upgrades, but to charge the price of a new game when majority of the people that care already beat it is pretty silly to me.

I don't think the sentiment is going to change anything, unfortunately. But hey, at least people are trying. At least their community/social media team (and maybe CS) will be aware of it.

The price of the console to me is fine, the games are higher then expected, but then again I was there from nes beginning and can remember paying silly prices for n64 carts etc, I’m thinking the game carts must be bigger so that’s why prices higher rather then the download , but I’m laughing watching the treehouse at all the comments, yet all those complaining will still go buy at them prices , can’t wait for the gta 6 price drop lets see how people react to that if it something silly or people make excuses why gta 6 deserves that

Is there any evidence that shows an example of video game sales decreasing as a result of the price of the game itself? For example, Monster Hunter Wilds has sold over 10 million copies already and it is USD $69.99 at its base price. Nintendo will be just fine.

I do remember some sort of report being released (maybe from Sony?) about game sales decreasing but overall revenue still rising because of the extra $10.

Nothing but broke kids and jobless adults thinking they're entitled to an entertainment device in a hobby that's always been a luxury.

And trolls. Always some trolls involved.
As an adult with a well-paying job, and a business on the side, it’s people like this that will be the reason we see $100 games as the norm in 5 years.
Makes sense as it is higher resolution and frame rates now. 🤷‍♂️
Microsoft did that for free.

With the Switch 2 announcement the prices also were showed and people got kinda mad

Initial price for the Switch 2: US$450
Initial price for the Switch 2 with Mario Kart World (downloadable): US$ 500
Games for Switch 2: US$70 for some titles, US$80 for Mario Kart World
Original Switch games enhanced for Switch 2: US$70 - also, maybe is a downloadable patch instead of the full content on the cartridge

So the internet went heavy and kinda creating the campaign "drop the price"

Do you think it will affect for real? Nintendo is a company that usually keeps their foot in the floor for better or worse, but sometimes they change.

3DS was launched for US$250, and a few months later dropped to US$170. Wii U also got a price cut in a few months, from US$350 to US$300

What time is it?

Tales from my ass but I do think certain titles have been hurt this approach and I'd point to Returnal. If we want to make this Nintendo centric, Metroid sales have always lagged behind behind the other Nintendo tentpole releases so it will be interesting to see what tier Nintendo decides to price it at.

Never thought I'd see the day where people who are defending Nintendo would reach the PC Master Race level of rhetoric.

People have no issues paying $500 for a 5 year old PS5 that is bulky as fuck and also the worst of the two SKUs available.

This is completely portable and you can also play on your home + Nintendo games. I don't see the issue, what did you expect?
