Good god this game just throws so much shit at you. So many systems and subsystems and stats, etc... It's really overwhelming. I've even played through the original (it's been a while), but I'm feeling kind of confused. I can't imagine what it's like for a completely new player.

Also, I feel like enemies are spongier and you die more easily in this game compared to the original. I guess the game is balanced assuming that you're going to be fully utilizing the demon powers or whatever they're called and also summoning NPC allies?

i absolutely adore the souls games, every one of them, but i just cannot get into these nioh games

there something about the arcade feeling of the movement/combat that i just can't stand, and i fucking hate the level design

what a shame

There’s a few things there that’ll help. Knocking off the horns of the yokai will drain their stamina significantly. You can also apply Shock to weapons to cause them to stay in place. If you do a critical attack you can hit any enemy out of their animation. Unless you do a critical their move will go right through yours. Getting their stamina down is a lot more important. If a boss’s stamina depletes then you can more than likely break their attack.

If I’m in a room surrounded by enemies I’ll utilize my soul core ability and use the guardian spirit transformation to sponge any damage I can’t normally handle.

I think you have to look at it like you’re a glass cannon. Once I got amor and gear down. I threw poison or equipped my weapon with poison. That drains enemies while I ran around them. Yokai abilities definitely help and so do all the other boosts to equipment, skills, weapons, and etc. Once you find a Yokai core that you like, you’ll just upgrade it with other soul cores.

While the level design is certainly bland and flat compared to Souls games, I've never found the combat to be "aracady". On the contrary, I honestly find it really engaging and fun that completely destroys Souls combat in-terms of depth and breadth. The stance system for example is a really cool idea, and opens the door for massive variety in play styles in my experience. I find going back to Souls combat after playing Nioh for a while to be quite mundane, but Souls game shit on Nioh in many other areas such as level/world design. lore, general aesthetics, and vision.

A good tip is to NOT go for the lowest equip weight in this game. Sure the Ki regen is faster, but at least in the beginning, it's much more handy to be able to eat a few hits. I play in mid for both important stats (toughness and agility). There are 3 tiers for each of them. Agility is either less than (i think) 30% equip weight, noted by the blue color of the equip weight stat. Between 30 and 70 (green), and above 70 (yellow). This affects how much Ki you eat while dodging as well as how fast it regens. Using light armor to get the blue tier is just suicidal unless you're a dodge pro though. Toughness has 2 breakpoints as well. ~100, which means you eat a ton of Ki damage when you block, 100-200, meaning you eat less Ki damage on block, and 200+ which means you lose a lot less Ki when you block. Generally speaking, souls players and those not good at yokai counter/parries/dodges should go for a more defensive build where your default defense strategy is just to block and wait for an opening instead of having to dance around your enemies and spam parries. By virtue of aiming for higher Toughness, you will inherently have more defense as well so you can eat more hits when you don't guard in time.

You eventually want to get good at timing and using Yokai counters though, they're really important for bosses and tougher yokai enemies. If you're having trouble learning how to use Yokai counter, pick the shark spirit for "phantom" type Yokai, it has the quickest and easiest to use counter out of the 3 types. (R2 + O on a Playstation controller).

Also, try finding a Yokai soul or piece of equipment that gives you the skill "enemy sensor". It's one of the most useful in the game to help you avoid sneak attacks and be prepared for what's coming. It shows red dots on the minimap for where an enemy is waiting for you. I personally run all 4 sensors on my character at all times, Enemy/Amrita/Treasure/Kodama. This lets me make sure I fully sweep each level and don't miss anything.

And finally, as suggested earlier in the thread, if you plan to put points into Onmyo magic at all, go for the skill tree that gives you Barrier Talismans. They negate the negative effects of the Yokai realm (when everything turns to black and white) and auto-disperse yokai pools when they come into contact. I feel like those realms can be a deal-breaker for players early on because you have no effective way of dealing with them.

I agree the game throws way too much at you in the beginning, but these are the most important things I've found after putting in about 20 hours this weekend, and I even had over 200 hours in Nioh 1.

Combat flow is just different compared to the original.

Yokai shift is useful, but its more of a desperation mode than a "devil trigger" stye uber-damage mode. The trade-off being that rather than having one big dps burst option, you have multiple special attacks and abilities which can produce the same effect in combination. You buff-up, inflict ailments, and whittle the enemies KI down until they get winded, at which point you finish them off (hopefully).

In simple terms there's a lot more finesse and intricacy to maximizing your dps. Of course you can outlevel stuff, but on a relatively even footing you will find fights longer and tougher because having good gear isn't really enough. When you start piecing stuff together though... you wreck shit.

It can seem daunting at first, but you don't need to master everything straight away. Just pick an approach that works for you on a basic level, and as you learn stuff build out from there. I personally found it super-rewarding because its so deep. I'm on around 900hrs playtime and I'm still making progress in terms of optimizing my personal build! And I'm not saying that as a brag, its definitely far from the most min-maxed set in existence, what it is though is tailored to get the most benefit from what I like to do, while covering my ass on things that I'm sloppy with!

The Diablo-side feels like a much stronger influence in Nioh 2 for sure.

I'm having an issue with upgraded Ps5 version. I own the PS4 disc and the DLC. I download the Ps5 upgrade and them proceed to delete de PS4 version. But in the end the Ps4 version is installed again when I turn on the console again. I thought the last Ps5 update eliminated this issue. Anyone with any input on the problem?
Remove all versions, insert disk, stop and delete any potential automatic download, go download the PS5 version only.

I'm really getting into the groove now. I spent most of the night helping people in co-op while also collecting a ton of cups and elixirs, and ironing out some tactics and combat skills that I bought.

Also, I beat the first stage on chapter 2 solo. I was trying to find someone to summon for the interior caves part, but matchmaking is all screwed up right now and I never got anyone in like the hour it took me to clear the stage. Man that part with the snake ladies in the forest had me on edge the whole time. I'm really loving the enemy variety and stage designs. Lots of branching paths and almost every one has at least a treasure or something to pick up, and shortcuts to unlock.

Also, I just found out tonight you have to spec a few skills into Ninjutsu to get the stealth backstab attack. I was looking for it on the samurai tree for some reason. Man it feels good to find a game again that I can't wait to play. It's been a long time.

New patch at least for PC buddies. It seems to alleviate the framerate issues, but they are still working on it.

Changelog:

Thank you for playing Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition.

The game was updated to the 1.25.1 version, you can find the changes of this version below:

・The confirmation button can now be changed from “Controls”

・Fixed an issue where the lock-on target would switch when the mouse was moved, even if the “Move Camera/Switch Lock-On Target” setting was changed to an option other than “Move Mouse” in “Keyboard & Mouse Settings”.

・Fixed an issue where the mouse sensitivity could become so high that it became impossible to change the settings

・Fixed an issue which sometimes prevented the selection of certain resolutions and caused the game screen to be cut off due to the Windows settings

・Fixed an issue which made the game prone to crashing in certain environments
※ If the game repeatedly crashes in a specific place, please try the following:
・Right-click on “Nioh 2 Complete Edition” in the Steam client ⇒ “Properties” ⇒ “Local File” ⇒ “Verify Integrity of Game Files”

・Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash when displaying the descriptions of equipment special effects.

・Alleviated the issue where the frame rate tended to drop when "Effect Quality" was set to "High" in "Graphics Settings".
※We are continuing to investigate and address this issue

・Reduced the tendency for the game to run slowly when certain attacks hit the walls

Yes :messenger_tears_of_joy: this game is the personification of too many systems, loot, skills etc. Nobody during the design of this game said "No" to an idea. I beat and started to enjoy this game by the end, but only after I stopped expecting it to be like Souls. I totally respect peoples' love for this game, but my opinion is this game is overly complicated in every way. The controls have you hitting multi buttons like crazy to access different shit, it really awkward. A lot of the bosses are bullshit health sponges.. and that snake boss early in the game? Total dev trolling lol. Lots of one hit kills and fighting on cliffs. Also, ambushes lol... it got to a point where they over use this so much you always know a guy is hiding behind a door, or some jack ass is laying on the ground.

Personally like all Souls games more, but obviously many like complexity of Nioh's systems. Different games for different people :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Its complex, but not over-complicated in my opinion because every system feeds into the whole. So as you get more familiar with what you can do, you realize that you can distil your build, skills, equipment down to the particular combination that works best for you.

I don't use stance switching or deliberate Ki-pulsing for example because I use other methods to achieve the same outcome. My 4 set Yokai skills each accomplish different situational purposes, and I use a mixture of Ninjutsu and Onmyo magic to cover me for most any eventuality. Enemies lurking in ambush isn't an issue because I always have the tools to hand to get the drop on them first, and if stuff links in I have options for crowd control, or added survivability.

The key thing is that at the hardest difficulties you'll live or die based on how well everything synergizes in your setup. All that complexity represents a multitude of ways to be better, and although none of them individually are enough to be huge difference makers, when you start putting them together it can feel revelatory.

That's super satisfying for me.

Game is complex and very daunting to a new player, to be sure. I feel like you have to do a lot of research and learning outside of the game to git gud. Once you do become competent, the game is a blast.

I just found out last night that there are certain yokai abilities that you can only Counter Burst with a specific type of yokai transformation, and there's really no visual cue to tell you which ones are which. That honestly sucks a little. I kept trying to parry that elephant guy's lightning move with the Phantom burst, but I somehow never could get it. Now I know that it can only be stopped with Brute counter burst. Lame.

Well, brute is the stun mode, Feral is dodge and Phantom parry. If Phantom could stun as easily, it'd be OP!

Ippon has the best stun yokai ability as timed properly it floors human enemies and does a shit-ton of Ki damage to boot. People kinda slept on it for a long time because its more range dependent than Gozuki (which was kinda broken for a long time due to the ki damage scaling wrongly) and until a recent patch cost the same amount of attunement.

As I suggested earlier go into the training grounds in the dojo and test out the various Yokai Skills paying attention to how much damage and ki damage they do relative to their amrita cost.

I just started this on the base PS4 and the performance even on action mode is really disappointing for something that almost looks like a PS3 game. Framerate is a bit stuttery and there's bad aliasing. I tried it a bit on the Pro and it was considerably better but I shouldn't need a Pro for game that looks like this.

The performance is all over the place even on a 3090 on PC. It really shouldn't be as much of a performance hog as it is.

Man, I wish people in Co-Op were more chill. When I join in with a player that already has a helper, 9 times out of 10 they just run way out in front and kill everything and skip hidden stuff/kodama/treasures. I mean sure you're basically providing an extermination service for free, but the host is missing out on so much shit that they'll likely have to come back for at some point. I always try to lead them to the hidden stuff unless they actively skip picking stuff up, in which case I don't care as much. I've only summoned a handful of times for help myself, and when I get people that just try to rush clear the stage, I just boot them. It's not like the stage completion rewards are even good, usually it's just a handful of consumables and some blue tier equipment. Not sure why they're even doing co-op if they don't actually want to play with people. I noticed this in Nioh 1 on PC too.

Well, the reason people do this is because as a rule the further you progress through into the game, the better the loot gets. So just blasting through is beneficial even if you end up skipping a bunch of stuff. Basically people get stuck on (or are afraid they'll get stuck on) a certain boss so just summon help at the start.

BTW: Its worth noting you can start a co-op expedition solo and prevent others from joining (use a random keyword or such) in order to get the exp bonuses and additional enemies. This is far and away the fastest way to level up, if you can handle the limitations on shrine visitation it entails.

Well, I hit my first roadblock. I'm getting Muneshige flashbacks from Nioh 1.

This dude:
saito-toshimitsu-npc-nioh-2-wiki-guide-300px.jpg

Same bullshit as Nioh 1. They make a human that has none of the rules that other humans in the game go by. Staggered in the middle of getting hit by a combo? Gonna just knock you right out of it. Cast Onmyo and then immediately Iai quickdraw a Odachi? Sure no problemo. Inflated HP? You bet!

By the way, what is the difference with these blue icon "Online Missions" anyways?

Online Missions in Nioh 2 is a new Mission category which is included in 1.09 Patch version. In this type of missions players partake through side activities of the game that advances side plots of the game. Players can receive special rewards for completing a sub-mission for the first time and subsequent times, this page covers a full list of all the Online Missions in the game.

Believe it's meant for co-op, but most people solo it anyway. I cheesed Saito by going back when I was higher level. He is a massive pain in the ass on higher difficulties though.

Basically online missions are completely optional and do not count towards game/story progression.

I think I'm going to call it on this one just like the first. I'm almost 40 hours in and checking a guide I'm not even half way through the game (chapter 8). While I enjoy the combat I feel like this takes the "git gud" mentality of the Souls series and just amplifies it. Basically demanding perfection or getting hit for ridiculously high damage is not really for me. Doesn't seem to matter what I wear I still die in 1-4 hits. I got my money's worth.

So what am I missing about the Amrita gauge in Nioh 2? (I'm talking about the gauge that lets you go into Yokai shift or Living Weapon as they called it in the original Nioh). In the first game I was able to charge it up and use it 2-3 times per level, but in this game I almost never get it charged in time to use it on a stage's boss, and I do full sweeps of every level when I play through them. It's confusing because there are a ton of stat bonuses that depend on being in "Yokai Shift", but I never get to use the fucker. Am I doing something wrong? I looked it up on the wiki (which is in pretty sad shape honestly), and the only info I found was on the page for the shark guardian spirit (the one i use) and the dude said that he never gets his gauge charged either. Is it just something with that particular guardian spirit?

I was going through my equipment and saw a random buff called Pleiades that looks like it increases amrita gauge fill speed, but it still feels like there's something off. Did they really decrease it that much?

Wow, the latest patch on PC completely fixed the weird frame pacing issues I had before. It feels very smooth with G-Sync on now.

Also DLSS rocks. Set it at balanced and getting basically a locked 120 FPS at 4K now.

I didn't understand the Online Mission for Saito and went balls in, jesus, that's all I can say. Finally dropped him but had to wail on him high stance with lightning seem to do the trick with a switch to low and back to high. Would of had him earlier but somehow the man with a shrivel of hp left decided to become a god at blocking everything I threw at him. This game just loves to make you WTF.. so much. I'm still sticking with claws and moved to split staff.

No kidding Pejo Pejo . So many times I just laughed hysterically at the fight. Nioh 2 keeps the human bosses at god tier levels. The first boss was a welcome back to Nioh but then Saito comes in and says time to get fu#& boi.

He truly is the Tachibana Muneshige of Nioh 2. I haven't had any real problems with bosses at all in this game yet other than him. I beat tree weasel, snake, bull-a-pede without a death between them. Hell, even that Gozuki/Mozuki double boss fight. Ah well, I'll keep trying. I'll eventually get it.

I've done most of the missions in the 3rd area so far and the game seems too easy up to this point. All the bosses I've fought have gone down in the 1st or 2nd attempt. I don't remember the beta being this easy and I enjoyed that a lot more.

I'm not specializing in anything just using whatever the highest level weapon I come across at the time is. I want to use all the weapons and abilities by the end so my stats are spread out a bit. I would recommend Magic and/or Ninjitsu and weapons that scale with dexterity/magic to make things easier. Those abilities give you powerful extra options and dexterity also boots ranged weapons. The Spear is also a good weapon I find and handily scales most with Constitution.

So far though I find this game considerably easier than the first game or the Nioh 2 beta which was the best Nioh experience for me.

Interesting that you thought that. I thought the first 10 or so hours into the game were harder than 1 by a large margin, but it gets progressively easier the more skills you unlock, while the enemy difficulty kinda stays static. By mid game you can pretty much faceroll most of the stages.

Enemies don't know how to react to mid-stance spear thrust. That, and I also spammed the yokai poison snake skill. Definitely made the game easier than N1, although I think N1 was also harder because I never used spear and only played katana. Spear has better reach and requires less evasion skill, I find.

During my start I've been using fists and split staff I've moved over to Odachi and fists with paralysis. When I actually play it correctly I stun lock some bosses/enemies. Still want to work on increasing paralysis more. going into boss fight for kasha but need to take a break I get into these long play runs of the game , easily gets addicting with all the loot drops.

Yea I get what you're saying. Spear double triangle combo felt like cheating a lot of the time with the reach, quickness of the attack, and huge ki damage. I decided not to use Odachi and Spear as a crutch in this game like I did in Nioh 1, so I've been using Hatchets/Splitstaff and have been having an amazing time. Now that I had a few hundred hours of Nioh 1 under my belt, stance switching and ki pulsing was a lot easier to pick back up and play.

As a pc user, it feels so good to finally be able to sink my teeth in this game...going to try to master the tonfas for this one.

And yes @Zefah good lord is this game complicated; love it - because for once it's actually worth taking the time to learn it!

I was hoping they'd make some improvements with the inventory system but it looks pretty much the same

I made my original comment with the launch patch as my basis. As far as I can tell, a most of the performance issues (mainly with the particle effects on high settings for Nvidia cards) have been fixed with new patches. It seems to run quite good now according to Digital Foundry on most hardware, which is reassuring. Performance has definitely been more consistent for me as of late compared to the launch period.

You're supposed to drop an item that a demon would want (not salt etc). If you attack them too many times or give them something "good", they zap you. I usually drop a spirit stone or piece of purple equipment that I don't want. For dropping equipment at least, better rarity = better trade from them.

Any solution?

P.s. the character creation was also very dark.

It's gotta be a graphics setting or display setting issue. I had no issues with brightness in this game. Try messing around in the settings and make sure your drivers are up to date I guess.

Ok the dark thing was just a one time glitch but now the game is overwhelming me with a fuckload of mechanics and stuff to use\upgrade, i kinda feel a bit lost lol, it makes me feel like i'm playing the game using only 30% of these things :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

What is the best overall dlss? quality, balanced or performance? i'm using balanced but i can't quite achieve locked 60 at 4k, i'm gonna try 1800p\quality later.

General advice:

1) Don't be afraid to use the dojo for training and practicing your moves.
2) Play around with all the weapons until you find 2 you like and stick with those for a while until you learn to be familiar with them. It's common to pick one short range weapon and one longer range weapon.
3) The game has lots of convenient hidden things that just make the systems easier to use. When sorting equipment, you can sort by type. When selling gear you can hit sell all, or hit a different button to check them to a list and then sell the ones you checked at the end to speed it up.
4) Don't be afraid to play co-op a lot. After you get a few levels in, just start going to the Tori Gate from the home base menu. Hit random encounters and drop in. There is no penalty for dying and you don't ever lose your souls. You only can help no levels you've already finished, and it just lets you practice stuff you already played to get better at the game, and you can get level ups fast and easy this way. And most importantly, it's a ton of fun to help others get through stuff you struggled with initially.
5) You get skill points from using your weapon / ninjutsu / magic. What this means, is that every mission you play, you should use all your magic, and your ninja items because it just gives you free skill points when you use them a lot. Even if you don't want a magic build, just equip one magic spell on your weapon and use all of it every mission, and you'll steadily get magic pts for free basically.
6) On consoles, you hit start and you can read a description of every stat in the game. This includes all equipment bonuses. If you don't know what something is, hit the button and read it.

Ki / fatigue:

1)The number one most important thing about this game is fatigue (Ki) management. If you spam attack, you are going to die. You have to put yourself into the mindset of an actual fight, or seeing two fighters square off in the ring. They size each other up and take their time. They do a few strikes and then back up. If you try and do 3 full combos in a row, you're going to get gassed if they attack and die.
2) The same goes for enemies. It is actually a viable strategy to let enemies attack and miss to get tired. You can take out some soldiers by letting them swing a few times with misses, then hit them once and they're exhausted. It's great.
3) Ki pulse is the single most important thing in the game. Practice it over and over until you get used to it, and use it after every single attack combo.
4) Be very weary of fatigue in dark realms. Be even more conservative with your attacks as you get tired faster.

Burst Counter:

1) The 2nd most important thing in the game. You have to be able to do this instantly whenever you see that red flash from an enemy. Don't get discouraged, because this is 2nd most frequent mechanic used for the whole game. No escaping it.
2) If you can't get the timing down naturally after practice, try all 3 types of demons (Brute, Feral, Phantom). The timing on each of their Burst Counters is different so you can pick one that feels like natural timing for you.

No worries, maybe it'll help someone else lol.

If you played the first, you'll get it in no time. There are a ton of systems in part 2 for sure.
