I absolutely hate Hollywood's obsession with remakes and sequels - but not this time. Looks tremendous.

Please do well. After The Northman, which I adore, bombed hard I was afraid Eggers would have a difficult time getting another big-budget movie made. But, well, Dracula and vampires in general never go out of style and Eggers seems like an obvious pic for a more art house type vampire film.

Fingers crossed. I know I am definitely going to see it in theaters.

Yeah. This looks categorically awesome. We really need a proper, gothic, scary, weird, existential vampire flick… and this looks like it’s going to deliver in spades. Eggers is a phenomenal film maker.

And can’t wait to see what Skarsgard looks and acts like. He did a great job as Pennywise, until that went down the shitter with part two.

Guys, this looks way too...Hollywood-y for an Eggers film, everything looks overproduced for a lack of a better explanation and the CGI shot, don't know...

I loved the Witch, adored the Lighthouse, found the Northman to be kind of meh but I'm looking forward to this one, I love me some Eggers.

The only problem ? I won't be able to see this in theaters, why ? 'cause i now live in a country where everything is fucking dubbed - there's absolutely no G'damned way I'm settling for non English spoken films.
While I'm at it : Fuck Spain, fuck Italy, fuck Germany, fuck France, fuck Russia and all other countries that keep butchering films and series 'cause of the dubbing due to their ethnocentric way of thinking, it's 2024 for fuck's sake, you'd expect people to have learnt some basic fucking English by now.

I’m with you but these countries have a massive industry of voice talent that would lose their jobs, plus all the technicians and studio people. It’s the voice acting lobby at full force. They’ll protect their jobs until the very end. And that very end might just be AI voice over. 🤖

As for the film, it reminds me too much of Copolla’s Dracula. Almost like a rip-off. I’m sure it’s good but the inspiration is too much on the nose.

Days like these...

At first I was really impressed by the trailer but you have a point it doesn't look bleak enough, it looks too clean.

Exactly, "clean" would be a good word to describe it, that, and "digitized"...
Egger's previous films had this "analogue" look/feel to them, this does not (judging by the trailer at least).

Also, like tommib tommib already mentioned, it looks way too much like Coppola's Dracula which was also overproduced IMO.

Cheers

Doesn't look anything like Bram Stoker's Dracula to me. Camerawork, lighting/color tones are totally different.

Was talking about the general story "beats" (I know that Stoker's Dracula was based on this) and its overproduced quality 🙂

Film nerd time so strap in.

I'm a massive fan of the '79 version by Werner Herzog and after watching this trailer several times, this looks like a painfully "clean", CGI-laden modern Hollywood cross between Herzog and Coppola's Dracula. The riding out of town shot is directly from the Herzog film...only now with CGI windmills? The castle reveal itself with the back if the carriage shot looks silly and again full of cheap CGI. Then we have that MTV 90s Metal video shot of the drawbridge and castle and so on. I was hoping Northman was just a misstep but this looks even more "modern studio system" which is disappointing as hell considering he made something as truly unhinged as The Lighthouse.

Watching this, I'm just unsure what the point was of making yet another version of Dracula with no particularly fresh identity. We have a million versions and this looks closer to the recent Netflix show or Coppola's take which went so fucking 11/10 on the visuals, don't bother to trying to outdo it.

Like The Northman, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because I love his first two movies though ultimately but right now I don't get it.

I enjoy Eggers movies, but it's not going to beat the 1979 remake of the same name. The opening 30 mins of the movie with the real crypts and mummies is haunting.

The journey to the castle is awesome and I beat Castlevania many times over the years thinking about this movie.

Robert Eggers and Ari Aster are what we've needed in horror for years.

Between those two and Denis Villeneuve, we eatin' gooood with contemporary movie direction.

I noticed this immediately. In Eggers I trust, but this is easily my biggest complaint so far.

I was hoping for something closer to The Lighthouse in this regard.

This is making kinda want to read the original Dracula book.

Is it worth it? Or is it too trite by todays standards
My two cents only so don't take it as gospel.

The book starts off very strong, has many cool sections after but more or less bogs down into absurdly dramatic soap opera for much of its middle section. It drags hard for me and I've read it twice. The amount of dudes whining at bedsides and descriptions of boring medical procedures gets tiring.

That being said, segments that are the highlights of the Dracula pop culture mythos we all know are killer to this day imo.

I highly recommend Carmilla. It's a very breezy read, rather short and very atmospheric and gothic as all fuck. Its pace is much more like a Horror film in a way.
