Oscar nominations 2025

ÆMNE22A!C

NO PAIN TRANCE CONTINUE
Just a PSA; where would we be without actors? Personally I can relate so much that the Oscars gives me validation.

Is it me or in general these award things are getting lest relevant?

Depends on how you look at it I guess.

Were they ever more relevant? If yes, how so? I'd argue with the rise of social media, entertainment is now much deeper entrenched in our daily lives than it has ever been. Look how much Letterboxd grew in a couple of years. Every film major is starting his own movie podcast or trying to get on your #MovieTok #FYP.

And the oscars are still, by large, the most high profile event of that industry.

I think their viewership is going down.

That for example is, I think, a too reductive way of looking at it.

The only one I've seen from the best pictures list is Dune and I thought it was just OK (it should win best cinematography though, IMO).
I'm not really into modern movies, there's a couple of decent stuff every year but nothing has wowed me in a long time

I've only seen one clip from Emilia Perez and it's probably the worst thing I've ever seen.

LoL this is great.
If the entire movie is like that I might watch it. Seems like that rare The Room style movie that's unintentionally so bad it's good.

It is in general. I think their viewership is going down. Plus how many can you name at this point that are going to win? We don't have many great actors these days either.
One more thing is it’s easier now to discover what you like then relying on someone else.

You know I usually am a snob for movies and tend to wait for the Oscars to narrow down the movies I should watch but what the fuck is this year? Wicked too?

They all still going with their virtue signalling and claiming their $250,000 goodie bags while peoples houses, businesses and lives have been destroyed in LA because of the fires?

Suppose I’ve asked a stupid question.
I live in Los Angeles near the fires. For what it’s worth I think it would be great and people generally would like having something like the Oscars going on right now. Look up the history of movies in the USA, they basically came out as a wartime cope. LA had a history of it in particular. Much of those silent films came out of silver lake and echo park, areas near the California fires.

The problem is that the Oscars in actuality are fucking awful. So I really don’t give a fuck if they happen or not. But if we had some sort of decent award show, I think it would be nice even if the world is burning down.

I watched Emilia Perez last night. It was "fine" but in no way close to Best Picture-worthy, even in a relatively weak year like 2024.

  • The actual plot is a disaster and completely unwatchable from that perspective. For me, I tend to weigh plot just as much as acting, directing, cinematography, etc. so I could still make it through the movie.
  • I thought Zoe Saldana was incredible in it and I do think she deserved her nomination.
  • The direction was excellent with some really unique camera movements, especially during the songs (yes it's a musical - don't ask lol)
  • The songs themselves were completely forgettable bordering on "bad". I thought Selena Gomez's main song was great but otherwise they are best described as sing-talking which is pointless for a musical.
  • I will give major props on the choreography though. Top tier excellent, and Zoe Saldana is actually an incredible dancer. She really carries this film.
  • 2h20m is unnecessary. Should have been 1h40m tops.

Overall I'd give it a 6/10. Without Zoe Saldana it would be a 3 or 4.

Looking at this list you’d think it was a bad year for movies.

The box office list for last year paints a very different picture when it comes to what was popular.

It's not a general audience popularity contest. Similar with games, madden doesn't get nominated for GOTY at the TGA.
Sad that the highest movie on that list that isn't an established IP is #16.. A movie about tornados lol

Some folks here in Brazil are rooting Fernanda Torres, no matter how bland the movie was. It's sort of reparation for the Oscar that fucking Gwyneth Paltrow stole from her mother (Fernanda Montenegro, who's also in the movie) back in 99.

Oscar’s are mainly just rubbish movies that are paid to be there. I’d rather see Twisters get awards than most of the movies on this list.

A lot of them are indie movies. Studios like Disney actually have the money and can't get even get them nominated despite pushing for them. So that logic doesn't add up.

Most people would rather see... Venom get awards than parasite. That's why there are MTV movie awards.. Where the same franchise movies made by the same 3 mega corporations like twilight, scream 5, marvel movies can win. It's based more on marketing $ than artistic merit.

Edit: also, I was wrong. Twisters in itself is a sequel. You have to go so far down the list to find something that is original.

Whatever the reason, having this even nominated for best visual effects

when there are far better candidates EG. Twisters

Just makes it difficult to take seriously.

Surprised to see so few hate for Emilia Pérez here, which is bad thing because it's indeed a piece of shit.

Please god let this sweep the whole thing. It's exactly what's needed to finally rid the Oscars of its last pretence of credibility and for Hollywood to totally unmoore itself from the rest of the world.

Looks absolutely lunatic-level DEI trash.

It's not perfect and I certainly don't agree with everything, but I and pretty much everyone making the art can take it more serious than something like the MTV movie awards.

I don’t know what they do different, not sure how much worse it can get.

Well. In 2023 Mario movie could have won best picture as it was the highest grossing instead of everything everywhere all at once lol.

This really just was a weaker year for movies in terms of quality. Dune 2 made it and it's #5, that's well deserved. Wicked deserved it I guess. The other top grossing? Nah.

The only movie that got nominated for best picture that shouldn't be there is Emilia Pérez. There were Def better movies than that lol.

Which of the ones listed did you like? How many of the best picture nominees have you seen?
I saw Dune part 2, it was alright, bit too Marvel where they want to be adult but can’t do anything too adult. It was better than the first one though.

I haven’t seen Substance but have heard good things. If any deserve a place on the best of list I would go with that.

Redneckerz

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy
I saw most movies last year and i can't even remember half of the nominees.

I will say this. The Wild Robot deserves to win something. Amazing artstyle, great story, felt really refreshing.

However i figure Emilia Perez will win, which just merely judging by its plot seems all set for winning because that's the in-thing now.

FYI just reading the plot already sounds ridiculous. A cartel leader doing a sex change. What kind of shit are you on to think of stuff like that?

Denis Villeneuve not nominated for best director is unacceptable and downright offensive.

Also they nominated a man for best actress.

Fuck the Oscars.

Eh, Dune Part II was great, but also a. It of let down compared to Part I.

Ended up watching both The brutalist (theatre) and Conclave (home rental) yesterday. The brutalist is definitely the better movie, somewhere between good to great, hard to recommend though. The conclave was rather disappointing unfortunately. Fine but I expected more. I think Anora takes best picture.

I saw The Brutalist last night too. I really enjoyed it. It's one I think I'll be turning over in my head for a while. I can see it doing great, in with a really good chance for Best Picture and Best Actor. Some incredible visuals too, particularly in a certain location in the second half.

Not giving Challengers a nod for best pic or OST is frankly embarrassing

Anyway after Gervais/Nikki hosting the GG, the Oscars has been usurped in my eyes
