PAL Charts - Week 51, 2012

We're still the biggest market in the EU. Point being we're not losing relevance just because we don't buy much Nintendo stuff.

I just said that the market is shrinking, and that's quite evident (not only video games, of course). And it's far from Japan, while many people were predicting an overtaking, that it's not gonna happening.

nintendo is obviously the barometer by which to measure if a market is declining or rising.

us market collapse incoming in the new year. worldwide game market suffers shock shrinkage! it's ridiculous how people write off one of the biggest markets as declining because we don't buy poorly marketed / designed consoles.

We've had many weeks in the first half and in the Summer with overall sales HALF of the sales in the same weeks last year ( which showed a consistent drop compared to 2010 too). IMHO, the big deals in UK are starting becoming a problem too: in the sense, why buy games at full price when they'll be at half the launch price in just one-two weeks? I don't know how much retailers / publishers are happy with this.

I wonder how things will look when the next-gen consoles launch. Part of the shrinkage has to be attributable to generational fatigue. I think retail will see a boost once some new blood arrives (and no, I don't count the Wii-U as 'new' in that sense). We're also transitioning to digital seemingly faster than most, some digital numbers would be useful.

Is it shrinking or is it just retail that is shrinking?

Retail sales are up 0.9% YoY by volume in the UK. The consumer market in the UK is not shrinking, it's growing faster than almost all other EU countries.

We just haven't bought the Wii U. Nintendo fans need to get over this fact and stop trying to blame market conditions for the failure of the Wii U in the UK.

And how much of that shrinkage comes from healty PS3/X360 platforms vs Wii falling off a cliff ?

I feel it's no different from steam sales. some will buy the game as soon as it's released, some will wait. the number of people who wait compared to those who buy it day one is negligible in my opinion, just as it is on steam.

the rrp of games is higher than in places like the US so they probably make good on those first couple of weeks before the drops

They are dead last, or should I say Third ;)

I guess you could say that

Yes.

You could see the Nintendo market dilemma from a mile away because Wii U falls in the classic "between two stools" market position.

It lacks neither the lower price of 360 and PS3 hardware [with a mature library of cheap games] nor does it cater to the casuals by virtue of its comparatively higher price point and lack of distinguishing games. It tries to cater to both hardcore and casual but appears to be failing to capture either. It's an incoherent, fuzzy strategy in contrast to the sharp laser like market focus of the Wii.

Thanks.

I have a feeling it's selling quite a bit more than just "ok" in those countries, seeing how high NSMB2 is in those countries. Especially considering how the last European charts released by Nintendo showed how much UK isn't as relevant as it would have been in the past, at least for handheld sales.
Its hard to judge, last year MK7 + 3D Land meant the 3DS was better represented at the top last year and we know that wasn't a particularly strong performance. But those games were newer whereas NSMB2 has been out for a while already.

We know that for the first 9 months of this year it wasn't performing that favourbly in Europe vs. the US given there is no big DS market that hasn't transitioned.

I would be surprised if 3DS sales were more than "OK" to be honest.

Portables outside Japan just don't seem that strong. Even in Japan the portable market is way down from its peak.

How can it be UP compared to last year? I can't think Holidays did that much to recoup such a big gap.

No one has touched on this but those are absolutely massive numbers for Far Cry 3. Outselling FIFA at Christmas is a huge achievement.

Until we see some actual evidence that Nintendo is doing amazing in France/Germany/any other country I wouldn't go shouting from the rooftops that the UK is suddenly a "dying market".

Whole market. Gaming is down, but I expect PS3 and 360 are up. I won't know until I get the year end report in January which will break down sector growth in retail.

I've seen Far Cry 3 selling below £25 in quite a few places.

I have a copy under the Xmas tree.

Just an observation with handhelds during the NDS high period they were everywhere.
I travel by train and I used to see a lot of women especially with them. My wifey has 2 NDS. Nintendo really tapped into something pretty good with the NDS they got people who would have never usually gone out and buy a handheld onboard and buying copious amounts of software. Puzzle games really drew in the adult market.

They pulled the same thing with the Wii lots of people who had no real interest in consoles as they were but brought up the Wii in it's millions. I think their first misstep was the 3DS and now the Wii U seems to be on the same kind of misstep

Nowadays when I travel all I see is iPad's, Kindles and smartphones.

Wait...last year 3DS had an explosive end of the year WW. It did fantastic in Europe too, very strong performance.

And the market share improved after the XL launch, which had a better effect than the cut in 2011

The situation is more or less the same in the US, at least in the major cities (NY and Boston) that I frequent and at airports. The 3DS marketshare has been nearly identical in both territories this year as well (as the chart above shows). Everyone on the train/bus is zoned out playing music, some touchscreen game, or reading the news/Kindle. Smartphones have intruded big time on the commuter lifestyle that used to embrace handheld gaming.

What? We know as a fact for the first 9 months of this year that its been performing better than the US and the XL has created a sustained boost in Europe.

Your points are pretty much all ignorant misinformation that your pretending to actually know.

I said "nearly identical" marketshare. 20% vs 18%, 28% vs 25% falls under that descriptive umbrella. Unless you have some other data you'd like to share?

And it's "you are."

?
That chart shows that both the US and Europe had around the same ~40% boost, and it in the US it was released 2 weeks later.
I'm assuming the chart only covers the first 2 months up to their reporting period so I don't know what it's been like since September.

I always ask me what the purpose of this question is.

I would just like to know his motivation, does he own Nintendo shares, does he work for them, is he some kind of superfan that can't stand when people talk bad about Nintendo. I really don't get it.

The last two consoles released by Nintendo have failed to live up to their predecessors, when Sony did that with PS3 and Vita we all gave them shit about it, but somehow Nintendo should be immune to this criticism, for what reason?

The most surprising part of the Wii U bomb is just how bad it's doing at Christmas time. I at least expected a boost for the next two weeks based solely off of the usual Christmas Nintendo boost.

when Sony did that with PS3 and Vita we all gave them shit about i

This idea that the only reason Sony got shit for PS3 sales was they weren't living up to the PS2 is a fantasy. The 4 billion+ dollars they lost as a result of the PS3 was the primary factor behind that. And the Vita is the worst selling piece of hardware in a long time (welll at least until the Wii U in the UK).

There are also a lot of people who hate Nintendo, what is their motivation?

If he likes to defend it, because he likes Nintendo (or whatever reason), why not. It's not like everything is right what people talk about Nintendo here, even with their current situation in mind.

It's not like there where no people defending the PS3/Vita - situation too.

I would also like to know the motivation of people screaming that Japan was shrinking, declining, overtaking even by UK, etc. some years ago (but also now) :P

PS3 was called a failure right from the beginning, long before Sony lost any significant amount of money. It wasn't until 2008/2009 that we knew that Sony would lose that big of an amount of money. Now that the PS3 has established itself the people that bashed the system are using the losses as an excuse. Look up sales threads from early 2007. It was a running joke that the PS3 would be another GameCube in sales.

In retrospective, yes, the PS3 is a financial failure. But that wasn't clear in early 2007 and that certainly was not the reason why people called the system a flop.

It's not going to let up either. With titles like GTA V appearing on PS3 and 360 and probably not Wii U.

There are also a lot of people who hate Nintendo, what is their motivation?

If you'e offended by posters' perceived criticism of a certain company, well, there's always the origanal GFK Chart Track source from which to view the chart numbers. It's just that it gets tiresome in a "sales age" thread to label other posters' criticisms of Nintendo's strategy as "hate".

It's not like everything is right what people talk about Nintendo here, even with their current situation in mind.

If you think posters' criticism is invalid or incorrect, by all means offer a counter argument.

When exactly did we find out they were losing over a hundred bucks per unit?

I don't know if I'd consider the XL bump a sustained boost, considering it's descent was obfuscated by the release of NSMB2.

Weeks 38-41 in Nintendo's IR chart don't look particularly higher than the weeks preceding the XL release.

Halo still showing what looks like quite good legs. Having said that COD legs are just insane. It's been out for what 6 weeks and it is still selling more than just about any games first week this year. Incredible.

In terms of hardware the wii U looks dead but it's more difficult to tell with handhelds. Last gen even when the DS was dominating software was never really reflected in that. What i mean is in general handheld software tends to chart less than consoles so the lack of 3DS software isn't as telling as with wii U.

When exactly did we find out they were losing over a hundred bucks per unit?

Everyone knew that they were losing money with the PS3 at launch and that's why there in the negative for the fiscal year. But most of the people including Sony thought that they would be in the blank on the next fiscal year ending March 08. It, of course, didn't come so, but it wasn't until around then (or maybe around Q3 2007), that people and Sony realized that the PS3 would be a sinking hole financially.

The PS3 was called a flop because it didn't live up to the (now) unreachable PS2. The financial aspect of it did come later.

So in the UK Wonderbook is really out selling the Wii U as a new platform with only one game out for it so far?

How can you even compare the two?

Assuming by comparing the sales of Nintendoland which is highest selling Wii U game and is bundled vs Book of Spells which is 15 positions higher. Probably not a very good method but they are either very close, Wii U software sales are even more horrendous than the hardware sales, or it outsold it

dat sustained boost

September / first months of October are historically the lowest selling period for portables, in fact Iwata said the sales have been good in that period too

We succeeded in maintaining a good sales pace for Nintendo 3DS from September to the first half of October, which is usually the slowest sales season for handheld game systems.
