People not AI will make games, PlayStation boss says

PlayStation's boss says artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to "revolutionise" gaming, but he believes it will never replace the "human touch" of games made by people.

Game developers have been hit by slowing demand after the pandemic - but some are also concerned about the impact of AI on jobs.

Advances in the technology have the potential to allow many of the mundane parts of game development to become automated.

But it has also caused deep unease that AI systems will also take over the creative process, with voice actors in the US striking over fears the tech could be used to replace them.

Mr Hulst acknowledged AI was changing gaming - but said there would always be a future for human developers.

"I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content," he told the BBC.

"Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial."

Well of course he's gonna say that.

Mr. 'Let's dump half a billion into Concord' has 12,000 employees to keep motivated.

AI will 100% be making games in the future and thinking they won't, requires a deep level delusion.

TBH people are more miss than hit these days. Give AI MGSV as a template and let it go wild.

I, for one, welcome our robot overlords.

"Humans using ai will make games" will be a more accurate statement. It'll also help bring down the ridiculous costs.

AI is a productivity multiplier tool. It should mean team half the size should be able to make AAA games at the same quality in a shorter time.

Which is a good thing if it actually brings down devs costs... But knowing the execs running this industry, they're more likely to balloon dev budgets even further, maker bigger and bigger games and use AI as a marketing selling point.

Because even AI would find out how woke Sony games can be and erase that shit from earth.

All this means is that AI will be used for some portions of the planning, design, and coding process, yet a number of humans will still be needed to complete, or do the actual work.

The question is: how many humans will be required from now on?

Even the QA teams are affected by this.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but won't AI reduce the cost of game development and time? If so, isn't that a good thing.
It means we'll get even more games.

Ai is a tool used by people, fat kiryu and helmet are correct.

No chance in hell they don't start using ai for assets and shit in the future.

Yup. At some point it becomes stupid to not use AI to get the simple stuff taken care of.
Yep, why wasting an artist on making 50 different textures for the asphalt\ground when you can let ai do that and use the artist for stuff that need also a creative mind.

Let the ai do the menial task that still require a lot of time and manpower and let the artist do the artistry stuff.

People want faster gaming development cycles than 5++ years, Ai is the answer.

Exactly. AI will help the truly talented artist care more about the important visual stuff, and less on the mundane shit.

But all people see is….

People are needed to master AI prompts. Then you can make games with way less people = less cost = more revenue.

To some degree yes. But that'll only introduce new problems. I'd like to believe these companies wouldn't want to put themselves in a bad position where they only have 50% of the workforce and need help finishing a game.
