(Knack, the first video game developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. for the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system).

Thread title is not a typo, it's 2024.
Reporting on a year old news, huh? Well, not exactly, as this has been completely ignored by Western media thus far (unless someone looks at this thread and decides to report on it, I know I had that happen to some threads of mine before).
Japanese media, on the other hand, did report on the fact that the console stopped being available on the official Japanese Sony Store as of December 11, 2023. I did notice this myself at the time, but I was still waiting for official confirmation by SIE. Little did I know that they already confirmed it for an entire year!
On March 28, 2024, the official Japanese website for the PlayStation 4 was updated to notice that shipments for the system in Japan have ended.

(Slim model of PlayStation 4, originally released on September 15, 2016).

While we know that shipments for PlayStation 4 Pro have ended as of January 5, 2021, the Slim model of PlayStation 4 was still available to buy up until last year.
And the funniest part is that even Japanese media didn't check on this until months later. This being the first article I found reporting on the matter of PlayStation 4 and related articles not being available to purchase:
Indicating that the PlayStation 4 section encourages people to move to PlayStation 5.

Still, I haven't found any single article reporting on the official announcement by the Japanese PlayStation website, so this thread could, in fact, be a first one.
On a side note; considering that these kind of announcements are only made by the Japanese staff, it's totally possible that the PlayStation 4 has been now completely discontinued on a global scale, ending an entire decade of mass production.

Missed opportunity to make a super slim PS4 and penetrate it to every market at a cheap price with its amazing library and value... Honestly you could go this whole gen with just the PS4 and you won't be missing much. What an awesome console, Sony should be grateful for the PS4 and give it more legs.

The pandemlc forced Sony's hand to kill it prematurely (hardware production anyway, as it's still getting games). PS4 is only second to PS2 as the best console designed by Sony.

I wish companies would make old consoles in perpetuity at a much, much lower volume and sell them at a premium if that's the cost of doing that sort of business.

Mostly because hardware gets old and rusty, and it would be cool to be able to replace a, say, 2017 PS4 Pro with a new model, in order to keep P.T. operational until the day I die.

What about the pandemic caused this?

Couldn’t they have resume production when PS5 ramped up?

Semiconductor crisis, China government closing production plants, chains of supplies cut, anything ring a bell? Sony stopped PS4 production in order to put all efforts on PS5, even if they had decided to keep making PS4s, at what cost? It was not worth it and the situation was dire to be jumping through hoops to manufacture a console that was on its way out. .

I am a closet furry. Don't you judge me.
The Dismantling of Cross Gen has begun.

No more holding back PS5 games now.
