PlayStation Earbuds and Project Q Announced Announced - 8 inch screen remote device

It has all the components of the $70 Dual Sense as well as a 8" 1080p display, an SoC/memory, and a much larger battery. The absolute lowest possible price is $149.99 with $199 being much more likely.
To be fair, the dual sense doesn't have $70 worth of parts in it, they make a lot of money out of controller sales.

I expect it between $100 and $150, any more than that and I doubt it would sell very well. I'd probably still buy it though as it would get loads of use in this household between me and the kids.

Problem is they'll be looking for similar margins on this. It's a supplementary accessory playing existing PS5 games, not a loss leader they'll make up by selling software.

It works best when I have the PS5 on wired/ethernet connection and the game mode is performance/60fps. Works better on Steam Deck with Chiaki than on iPhone with the PS Remote Play app. Still more than playable on the phone depending on the game.

A lot of it will come down to the quality of your router.
I have a wired connection and I tried to play path of exile maybe a year ago via remote play. It was unplayable laggy. Don't know if things improved since then.

Agreed, which means unfortunately probably $199. Which is unfortunate because instead of trying to make $50 on it they could make it a very popular addition to thier ecosystem. Although who knows, we can still dream......

I tried HFW in performance mode on my Deck using Chiaki and it looks and plays great. Input latency felt like quality/30fps mode.

On my iPhone using PS Remote Play app and Razer Kishi it was playable with occasional micro stutter when panning the camera quickly. The Kishi plugs directly into the phone, so there’s not the added input latency of Bluetooth on top of the latency from streaming.

I bet it ends up being priced very close to the Switch OLED as well.

Anyone who buys this thing needs their head examined.

thats a full on handheld tho, not just game pass.

No it's fucking not.

If it's just a glorified controller with a screen then max I'd pay is about £100. Sony will rip the arse out it and want like £200-300 lol.

It is and its fantastic

See, this is why we have the problems that we do.

For $50 more you can get a real handheld from valve. It plays pretty much everything and anything you could want it to. It will also stream from the PS5, work with xCloud etc if that's what you really need (you don't).

For the same price (or less at the right retailer) you can get a real handheld with an OLED screen from Nintendo.

And yet here you are calling some streaming focused abomination "fantastic". Ridiculous.

Someone asked me of my opinion on steam deck vs G cloud and I posted this:

So in terms of streaming there are a few reasons why I prefer it.

  1. I feel as though I am almost cheating, I have very high FPS, around 60 and on other devices such as the iPhone and macbook pro I can go to 120 fps from games on my PC, usually with supersampling down to my devices native res.
  2. I love the idea of saves carrying over from device to device and streaming essentially enables that there is continuity between all of my devices I can literally play the same game on any device regardless of platform if it has a screen and the app then we are good to go.
  3. The screens on most of my devices are better than the SD by orders of magnitude , for example the logitech g cloud screen is absolutely incredible.
  4. The tech is there, I have of course a great connection but I was in cyprus recently which is almost 3k miles from home and the wifi was a bit dodgy and it was still decent enough to play Ive also had the same experience with data.
  5. The tech is getting better and seems to accelerating at an exponential rate.
A big bulky device with fans kicking out noise and heat as well as terrible battery life seems quite backwards to me, id rather let a local machine do that and access it, the ease of use is incredible.

I do hope they built actual video streaming tech like what WiiU had or better and it is not just an off the shelf video stream over WiFi solution…
It's likely to be Wifi 6 like the PS5 which is standardised/new and actually a good thing.

If you fear the increased hops from connecting to a router just use wifi direct to connect and you have something that actually surpasses WiiU's video streaming in every way.

Nice idea I just don't think people give a fuck about leaving their ps5 on and going out of the house to stream games to it.
The PS5 can be put into rest mode when turned off. Remote play automatically turns the ps5 on and you can put it back into rest mode from remote play. It's like having access to it physically.

Bulky? It's only an 8 inch display with dual sense controller on it, it shouldn't be too bad, and it will be light, and who knows, may have a stand at the back or even come with a dock (unlikely those will be sold separate). Either way, I'd just use it as intended so isn't an issue at all for me.

If it was to have the battery in a grip then that's something extra you have to charge and extra expense, to be successful this thing needs to be cheap.

'Bulky' does not mean 'big'.

Think you need a dictionary, not this.

Everything you are saying would be true... if this thing cost anything over $200. But even then though, its debatable...being there are controllers that cost more than $200.

I do not think it would cost more than $200. And it's what I have been saying since rumors of this thing started making the rounds. But the key thing here is this...its a controller.

And I think most people, you included, are just making this thing out to be more than what it really is. It's not some sort of ecosystem-improving thing, it's not some sort of new gaming platform... it honestly is no more special than you buying a third-party or pro controller for your PS5. And this is what I have been calling it since last month or so. It's just a different kinda controller.

Some people would buy the Dualsense Edge because they want back buttons, trigger stops, and customizations... and that's pretty much it right? How is this any different from that? Some people will buy this because it means they can play their PS5 anywhere they have an internet connection.

The thing is a fucking controller with a screen, basic ARM SOC, probably like 2-3GB of RAM, a bigger battery, wifi radio... and that's it. You can use it as a normal controller for your PS5, or you can use it for remote pay when you are away from your TV or your home.

Simple.

I said this about 3 weeks ago.

Anyways, I don't think Sony needs a proper handheld. One good enough to handle PS4 class game at least. Dont, see how they make one that doesn't cost at least $399. They already have PSVR2, which requires support as its own platform, would be fat out stupid to add another platform that wud require support too.

Now as for a remote-play device? Such is device should and would be treated as nothing more than another peripheral. like buying an extra controller or Sony PS-themed headset. It would and should be a niche product while its giving nothing more of a more polished and convenient way to do something you can already do with any smartphone.

I also believe such a device can be made for as little as $150-$199 at retail, something that has a budget ARM chip.

If you can only use it to stream PS5 content at home, then the thing is unnecessary. If you can stream anything with it, even without a PS5 (PS Now, Luna, etc.), then that might be interesting. On the other hand, I can also do this with my smartphone and a controller.

I really don't need to.

On average i get around 3 hours of battery life on my Deck, 4 hours + on the Switch OLED and you're going to tell me that's not enough?

I've also had zero heat or noise issues with either device and would much prefer to play my games on a native device without needing to concern myself with latency/connection issues. We are not the same people.

Honestly, I think the product would be more appealing if they released an official specialised Playstation screen that hooks on to a dualsense or dualsense edge for streaming. They could have released that for cheaper too so people are more likely to impulse buy it. They wanted to make money from it though so I don't see this frankenstien being cheaper than $180 with the controller and tablet together. Margin is probably higher.

Have to disagree with you. What would have been a Frankenstein would be anything that remotely looks like you hooking up a screen to a dualsense controller.

This is the most elegant way to do something like this, and it's perfectly fine for exactly what it's supposed to be. As I keep saying... its just a different kinda controller.

If I am being honest, what I don't like is that I feel this is what the Dual sense edge should have been. Build in everything that they put in the edge, but add a screen to it. And then price it at $200.

Fair point about the tablet hooking up to a controller not being elegant looking at all. On the other hand though when used as just a controller I think this is far more frankenstein. Bet that the rumble will feel odd too with the hands (actuators) so far apart.

Much better than what? It's an LCD screen. Other than the higher resolution (which doesn't make much difference on a device of this size) there is little difference between them (provided you're actually doing an apples to apples comparison - glossy screen vs glossy screen).

If you want to compare it to the Switch OLED's screen then it's no contest.

To be honest, this looks nothing more than: We don't know what to do with Playstation Now + let's put in some use the returned DualSense in warranty.

Project q seems so pointless. Most people have cellphones, tablets or a laptop. Also, if this thing has the same analog sticks as the normal controller, look forward to drift in 6 months, expect it going to cost hundreds of dollars to replace instead of 80.

The low latency earbuds do peak my interest, but if they are priced similar to other Sony earbuds, I sleep.

But is it confirmed this thing even works with server-based Cloud gaming? Maybe I missed it but it looks like it only does remote play.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a new PlayStation streaming portable device, ‘Project Q’.

Announced during a PlayStation Showcase event on Wednesday, Project Q is described as “a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game form your PS5 console using remote play over wi-fi”.

According to SIE, the device has an 8-inch 1080p HD screen and all the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.

playstation q lite is utter ''console'' stupidity.

They should make a PS Vita 2 or a Psp 2.

Bulky doesn't mean large and unweildy?

Yes, but it's in context.

A Steam Deck is not 'big', but compared to a Switch, other handhelds, and even other handheld gaming PCs, it is.

The controller parts of Project Q, being literal DualSense controllers, will be big compared to say Logitech's offering or using a phone or tablet with a side attachment. So yes, it will be bulky.

Video only talks about remote play, but I suppose it will be expanded to PSNow. It's just a video player, why not.

Ummm, you do realise that there's an entire industry out there of earbuds? Including from a leading audio brand called... Sony.
They don't have dual functionality though. Getting quality wireless earbuds plus a mic to work on PS5 with low latency requires some work around and additional adapters. This would be more convenient. Plus these would pair nicely with PSVR2 so triple function really
:

the PlayStation Bluetooth earbuds are coming later this year with “new wireless technology developed by SIE” to offer lossless audio and low latency

But that's where comfort comes into it, a dual sense controller (heck, any regular sized controller) is a lot more comfortable than steam deck and infinitely more comfortable than the switch controls and phone attachments. So it is larger and 'bulkier' due to the controller, yes, but it.will be very comfortable to hold unlike those others.

It may look like a quick hack job to some, but to me it's the perfect solution for in home use due to it literally being a full dual sense controller with a large screen.

True, true.

I still think it would have been better if the controller parts were detachable.

I don’t see the problem with dual sense use. It’s the best controller and they will have the features like triggers.
It’s only a device to use around the house mainly. No need to have it portable.

I think it would be awesome if games used it to display something while you play on real tv

I agree, if it can do remote play it should be able to do Cloud. I just find it odd that it wasn't mentioned, maybe it's waiting for the official ability to play PS5 games from the Cloud?

Hmm, looks interesting. If it has a decent SOC and can be hacked, I'm assuming it will use some form of Android, and the battery life is good I might be interested. Price will also be key.
