What lol. You literally get an award just for collaborating with Sony. That's hilarious. Just like watching the Game Awards.

Funny how this also reads: "Oh you stroke a exclusive marketing deal with Microsoft? No award for you Metaphor".
Unfortunately it didn't make the cutoff period, else it would have been there (Metaphor released on October 11, 2024).

Oh, nevermind. I thought the game released on September.

Same with Sparking Zero.

The Square Enix drop off after FFX is real nasty work.

Maybe they should make amends with so much of the talent that left them and try to bring the old gang back.

I think success derailed the company. So many left to other companies or to become freelancers and most have had really limited success outside of Square Enix.

lol, Genshin made so much money for Playstation annually, they need to make a brand new category specially for them, so other games could be included in the Grand Award category.

With this, I'm positively sure that Genshin was the "Chinese action game" who covers Sony's losses on Concord that were mentioned not a while ago via their earnings report, considering they had won the Grand Award for 3 years straight, and now Sony even made a special award just for them.

Yoichi Wada really fucked up the company, but the big issue to me has always been the rockstar mentality at Square.

Sakaguchi makes some hits, so he gets to waste company resources on a Final Fantasy movie no one asked for and that has basically no relation to the franchise at all. Now they're heading down the same path with Nomura, Kitase and Yoshida.

That was Black Myth Wukong most likely.

Again, Genshin is more plausible in this scenario, because that game has been proven to make hundreds of millions of dollars annually for Sony (hence they made a special award just for that game), and the last quarter were also pretty big for Genshin due to the implementation of new nation + characters, and also the topup bonus reset.

I'm really baffled why people here are always downplaying, or even ignoring Genshin's success on Playstation platform, despite the game has won the best selling category for 4 years straight, and the Insomniac Games leak also shows insane numbers with more than $1 billion being made within its first 2 years. I guess it's mainly due to the game being free-to-play + gacha?

Genshin isn’t a new IP. The Action RPG from China was a new IP.

The real drop off was after ff12 with ff13 and ff14 1.0 fiasco

I doubt bring old gang back will really work, too much time passed. And many already settled in other places, like FF11 team now part of CyGames and those do just fine.

I didn't really enjoy FF12. Might give it another shot one day though, but really struggled getting interested in it.

Was never going to play the MMOs so 11 and 14 were never happening for me.

13 and 15 are the fiascos for me. I hated 13 and didn't even bother with 15 and now 16.

I don't think any of them have "settled in" no one is having the success they used to and JRPGs are not in a great spot despite the advent of Persona.

I'm not downplaying that game's success (it's actually far more massive than most think, Infinity Nikki is going to be massive too, those gacha games are not to be scoffed at), what I'm saying is its success is an ongoing situation. Those monthly revenues are already part of Sony's revenue baseline for years now, so they would not be the factor that gave them a strong quarter even with Concord bombing.

The unusual thing that happened in that quarter specifically is the launch of Wukong.
