PlayStation Portal peeps. Still digging it?

I’m about to treat myself with one. Seems perfect for cozy gaming with the Christmas tree up and cold football games. Annoyed at myself for missing the 30th anniversary edition. But, white is fine. Did read about the black one but not a big deal.

Thoughts? End up being worth it? I’m thinking a good time to snuggle up and jump back in Hogwarts.

Currently replaying Dino crisis 1 on it, so so worth it. A godsend for Diablo and old games stuck at 1080p. Games with semi static cameras like GoW3 and MGS collection almost look native. Wouldn't play a fps on it tho.

Yap it's worth it, specialy with cloud gaming being a thing on it now.

If it wasn't the Portal I would have quit Metaphor: Refantazio midway.

I haven't been following things, but how is that streaming coming along? Can I use it to play my ps5 games using hotel wifi somewhere?

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Its utility is honestly quite limited for me, due to lack of paddles. I cannot easily jump from games on my console to this thing without hassles with the controls. So I really only use it to play slow, basic games I don’t want to waste my OLED on… I do use it though. I really wish an “EDGE” controller version existed. But of course it doesn’t. The streaming catalog is too limited, but if my whole library becomes available it will be used much more often.

It’s a great device if you can afford it. A luxury to have adaptive triggers and haptics to play in bed or on boring conference calls. It’s a really well made device, only downside is it’s 1080p and not oled but it’s really nice to get some quick game time in.

I dig it even more now since I stacked ps premium and can stream to it.

My only issue is that streaming or using remote play to the ps5, isn’t as convenient as the suspend you can do on the Steam Deck. So in situations where I gotta put it down and back up over and over, I prefer the Steam Deck.

Yes, with a caveat. Only certain game types make sense to play on the Portal, so any action-centric games are hit-and-miss (the delay is too great depending on connection).

But puzzle games, turn-based RPGs, and most single player games are all superb. I even tried streaming Lake from the cloud service and it was very good.

Cloud gaming, when coupled with the right hardware, is a viable option, especially when your budget is tight. But it is a use-case limited by scenario i.e. you can’t take it on the go, you have to be at home or in a place just relaxing.

I buy most of my system based on what games they have, but this thing just "streams" the games you already have on PS5 which is pointless to me.

I want one, but first I need to replace my ISP router because my network is unstable.

I want the Portal to clear my backlog. Also, I believe it would be perfect for turn based JRPGs or Baldur's Gate 3.

Say what you want about the Deck, but it won't give you PS5 graphics. If the Deck was more powerful and had better battery I would get it without hesitation.

For me, this would primarily for home use. Particularly while watching sports or something. I use Tachus fiber internet and have no idea how their equipment will behave with this.

I barely use this thing. Thought about selling it multiple times.

My experience has never been great with it despite having 1GB down fiber and being in the same room as my wired PS5 and the router.

Me and a couple people in another thread think it’s related to me using a mesh router as supposedly it came cause issue with stuff like this.

Download Playstation Remote Play app and test it. It's free and you only need a phone in addition to PS5 and Dualsense. Portal uses the same technology.

Most comfortable handheld I've ever used. If you have a good connection it's worth it. I think the audio quality isn't very good, no matter the method because audio via remote play is very compressed. If you are using it at home, and have wireless gaming headphones/earbuds, you can connect those to the PS5 directly while streaming to the Portal and audio is much better this way.

I was 10 minutes from heading to the store. So glad I checked Reddit lol
What’s the feedback on plebbit?

To me streaming is just a major no go, even as a complimentary device.

Switch and Deck or if you can tolerate Windows one of the other handheld PCs are clear of the Portal.

You will have to forgive me for not being a video game industry titan able to make what I want. I'm damn near 50. Got a Game Boy for Christmas in 1989. I bought a Game Boy Advance in 2001 on release day that is my wife's birthday. I know the struggle. No, she wasn't happy. Yes, we're still married.

Probably 95% of my time on ps5 is via the portal. With all the updates over the past year it's only got better and better and feels like I'm playing a native device, much improved from how it was at launch.

Keep in mind a few things :

- Audio output isn't the best, meaning, on most games audio is low even when wearing headphones.

- It doesn't support BT which is bullshit, sure, "BT audio lag" yadda yadda yadda but, I can use BT headphones on my tablet when using RP just fine so that's the usual Sony greed at play for you to buy the 200 Eurodollars official Sony in-ear ones.

- it only has Wi-fi 5

- Some batches have a fault with the analog sticks - most usual one is the one where it doesn't register the UP or DOWN inputs.
Also : if the sticks get fooked for whatever reason (ie, drift etc) you're pretty much fucked after the warranty expires.

- The touchpad is emulated by pressing on the actual screen which leads to some fuckery when playing games that have both a press and press and hold function like Alan wake 2, Helldivers 2 etc.

Those are the cons, I'd have also included the g'awful 59.94Hz mismatch stutter that it had until recently (which is the reason I sold mine) but, apparently, that was fixed with the latest FW update.

Other than that, the ergos are pretty much perfect, the fact that It supports haptics is really nice, the screen, while not an OLED is still really nice, bright and with a good contrast and the battery is good enough to last about 4-5+ hours depending on the game (and its use of vibration/haptics).

If you haven't used remote play before, I'd strongly suggest to try the remote play app on your phone or tablet before actually getting the Portal to see if you have a good experience (which is obviously home network dependent).

I have a good, stable network and my remote play experience has always been stellar, this isn't the same Remote play of yore and things have much improved, that's why I got the Portal but, that stutter was insufferable which made me sell it.
Had it not had the stutter problems, it would have been a solid 8/10 console in my book.

Thanks. I’m gonna mess with remote play tonight. If for some stupid reason it doesn’t want to work for me, I don’t think I’ll be out any cash.

Didn't it turn out that the stutter was a result of the Android OS needing an update, so it wasn't even on Sony or Portal hardware?

That's the theory, yes, still, it wasn't the user's problem Killjoy and Sony shouldn't have released it in that state, shit, it took them 1 YEAR for them to address it and that's because they released it alongside another money-making feature that is cloud streaming.

Another product sent for beta testing unfortunately, personally, I got on April 1st and sold it about 1-2 months ago since I just didn't have a use for it due to the stutter since both my phone, laptop and tablet steam RP flawlessly.

I guess everyone’s experience can vary, but since the latest update, and with the addition of a PS5 Pro, I’ve had a near flawless experience with the Portal. I’m currently playing through Dragon’s Dogma 2 on it and it feels like the game was designed for that handheld pick up and play experience. Metaphor F also looks and plays really well on it too. It’s ideal for me whilst the missus is watching the soaps and I’m a celebrity get me out of here!

I have enjoyed it more than I thought. $200 is impulse buy territory for me, and I’ve had it since launch. The performance since then has improved considerably. And the cloud streaming will probably become my primary way to play. It’s worth buying is you have the extra money and are curious.

I use mine every day. It's great for some pick up and play gaming. Love the thing. If I had to complain about something it would be playing the emulated PS1 and PS2 games due to the awkwardness with using the on-screen touchpad mapping. Having to tap the screen to pause so you can get to settings is weird thanks to emulator control being tied to the start button. It's more a gripe with the emulator design than the portal, though.

Are there workarounds for the headphones issue?

If someone is going to play mostly in their house....why?

Seems to me like for most games, a PS5 will look far better.

What is better... Having a portable console where you will have the largest catalog of video games of all consoles....

Or a poorly made piece of already let with unaesthetic controls that can only be played if you have the Internet or the PS5 on?

Excuse me, I am a big enemy of PS portal

Uhm, for someone that only owns a PS5 and buys all their games on there....who has the largest collection again? People aren't going to rebuy their games to play worse versions.
