Yeah, I guess a better comparison is Iowa. Still, I just think trying to open up the map would be good if it's possible.

Definitely. No idea how popular Carl Brewer is, but he's the former mayor of Wichita and running for the Democratic side.

Kansas should be a pretty strong target overall, given how the Democrats performed in 2014. Orman would be a big wildcard though - do Democrats drop out if he goes in like in 2014?

Thomas retiring this summer would be terrible for Conservatives, so they shouldn't really get too excited.

It would leave the court at 7, with a liberal advantage and no real reason for the Democrats to ever change that.

well I'm mostly curious if the degree to which Republicans have screwed the state over could turn it more purple beyond 2018. I'm probably too optimistic here though!

Brewer getting elected seems like it would be a big deal for such a white state though.

I don't think Thomas steps down before Gorsuch is on the bench.

The clips from cpac of the Republicans talking about how bad social programs and how voters on the left are "bat crap crazy" (from the zodiac killer himself) shows you how they couldn't give a shit half the country, or even the poor that support them.

What a pretty stupid thing to harp on after a disastrous couple days of town hall meetings dealing with angry people who like their programs and rely on them.

That line saying the lefts base was "Moscow" was fucking rich.

Wait--At CPAC, Brownback said the government needs to find a way for people to stay on Medicaid expansion?

How long have I been sleeping? What year is it?

I would probably rather Trump replace Kennedy or RBG with a young conservative than replace Thomas with a young conservative. Time is not on the liberal justices' side, and while I'm hoping all four + Kennedy will still be there in 3+ years, I'm not sure how realistic that is. If Trump were to replace one of them AND Thomas with young conservatives, that would be a disaster. If Thomas stays on through Trump's term, though, we can get a Dem president between 2021 and 2028 to replace Thomas with a young progressive or moderate.

Trump's executive orders on environmental protections (or lack thereof) are things that can be restored in future executive orders (or, you know, actual laws). The amount of legislation that Trump has passed so far is...zero? I think? Which, given a Republican majority Senate and House, compared to a Democratic White House + Congress in 2009, is awfully pathetic. And fortunate

He just tweeted 40 minutes ago!

I doubt much changed in less than a week.

DNC chair fight is probably the most asinine thing to worry about right now. How about worrying about actual candidates and winning elections.

It sounds like it's politicized behind the scenes, too.

Exactly. I mean, It's an very important role in a political party. How the hell isn't it going to be political?

Maybe most of the operations are administrative and not political, but they still choose where money goes, choose where thumbs get put on scales for primaries, and often speak for the party in interviews with the press.

It's not the most important fight in the history of the party, but it's the first major one to decide how to continue in this post-Clinton/Trump world.

It's not even like this is the first time the race was politicized. I remember the 2005 DNC race and 2009 RNC race receiving a lot of interest too. These things tend to happen when a party is absolutely decimated and it feels like there's no where to look for leadership.

No one is completely ignoring what the republicans are doing. It'd be really hard finding anyone that knows more about the DNC race than the actions of Trump, McConnell, and Ryan. But there's not a ton that democrats can do to overturn that. Really, the anti-trump protests they have been doing have been downright impressive for stuff they can do. But for the most part, democrats only really have power to steer the direction of democrats.

Right, and the longer it drags on, the worse it is.

Yeah so I mean there should be no doubt for anyone that Bannon and Miller are running the show and need to get removed from that administration one way or another, either independent of or with Trump.

Ellison winning wouldn't shut them up, it'd just embolden them.

I'll point you to my earlier link that points out that per the DNC delegates' own emails; the Perez supporters are the one politicizing this heavily compared to the Ellison supporters. :p

As I've said for months (if not years) now; the Clinton supporters are as bitter and petty about the whole thing (why do you think Obama didn't care for the DNC). People don't like losing.

The email survey suggests that if the chairmanship race continues through several rounds of balloting, Perez might be in a better position to prevail than Ellison. While Ellison's supporters had few qualms about backing Perez as their second choice, the same didn't hold true for Perez backers -- few who ranked Perez as their first-choice candidate said they would back Ellison as their second choice.

"I'm surprised that Perez supporters are not picking Ellison as a second choice," said Washington state Democratic Party Chairwoman Tina Podlodowski, a Ellison supporter. "I wonder if it's this desire for less dramatic change."

It might also be a sign of lingering resentment from the Democratic presidential primary. Ellison was an early and prominent Sanders surrogate. While he eventually came on board and worked hard for Clinton, there is still some bad blood among establishment Democrats who believe the Vermont senator's tenacious primary challenge damaged Clinton's chances in the general election.

Mayor Pete is really the hero we need right now.

No jokes, the guy has what it takes to be a force for unity and actually implement something resembling a workable 50 state strategy.
