It'll happen to a degree. Obama is popular because he electrifies so many demographics - blacks, Hispanics, young people, and older liberals mainly. George W Bush electrified many conservative demographics: religious right and war hawks/military. But so far they don't really have a candidate who unifies all the groups (including fiscal conservatives) while also galvanizing the younger conservatives. I think it'll happen eventually, just not to the level Obama has shown. I think it's safe to say he's a political phenomenon unseen since Reagan.

Goddamn at those fivethirtyeight numbers. If Obama gets Florida it will basically be the map I predicted at the start of the campaign. I'm getting super excited for tomorrow.

The only reason the election is close is because Obama inherited a shit economy and it didn't recover fast enough for most people and their ignorance on why is driving it close.

If ue was 6% Romney would be laughed off the stage

What is funny is that I voted for McCain knowing he was going to get creamed, but I never bought into the hype that Obama was some sort of evil mad genius. He just seemed like a repeat of Clinton to me. I was hoping he would garner the same level of cooperation (however small it was) that Clinton got out of congress while he was in there to cooperatively make the country better.

Pity that he had to fight against utter jackasses for 2 of the last 4 years. and didn't accomplish anything except a right-wing answer to universal healthcare while he had congress in his pocket.

It is a shame that Dems won't take the House, since they would probably act as if they had a referendum mandate to get a lot more stuff done this time around.

I think it would be incredibly difficult to get a real Rock Star Republican, just because the party and its platform has such limited demographic appeal. Even with charisma, it's difficult to have wide appeal when your party is about disenfranchising the poor and minorities and the middle class while cutting huge breaks to millionaires and big business. Another problem is that their narrative is so negative -- it's never about how great their candidate is, but how awful the other guy is. The Rolling Stones weren't popular because they tried to shit all over The Beatles.

What made Clinton a rock star was his ability to appeal to lefties as well as working class types that were traditionally Republicans. I don't think I would really consider Obama a rock star at this point (at least nowhere near the level of Clinton). His working-class appeal doesn't go beyond the auto bailout, but that's just barely enough to win him Ohio and probably the Presidency with it.

"Independent" guy who thinks Obama is evil because abortion.

Agreed. Part of the problem is that even if a republican fires up every major group within his party, it still boils down to white men and older white people. It'll take awhile before we see someone who can really excite young people and expand the base.

Conservative seem to think that guy is Paul Ryan...but have they actually listened to him on the stump? He's not effective, he's boring, and he has proven himself to be a liar. Rubio isn't much better, except he can give a good speech.

If Christie lost some weight...perhaps he could be somewhat of "that guy" for GOPers

I know obama will win tomorrow now I just hope that Obama goes more left on alot of issues and stands strong against democratic concessions. Obama could cement himself as a top 10 president of all time I think depending on what he does in his second term.


With that said where do you guys currently rank obama all time among presidents and where would you rank him after 4 more years and the potential for a more progressive agenda?

His shtick has always been a chicken little with a weird fixation on Hillary Clinton's personal life and the integrity of the Obama marriage, he never pretended to be a conservative.

It would be more (or impossibly) difficult to find such a charismatic candidate until the party changes, but the party pretty much HAS to shift its policies within the next two presidential cycles to avoid Whigdom.

When the party goes back to its roots (I'm talking 1860's) and embraces change and equality, but with the added bonus of rewarding hard work and individual accomplishment, and rejecting the notion that government need be in everyone's lives, I could see them winning back mindshare on the national scene.

Until then, they will have to do with the morbidly obese Chris Christie running for president against 4 bigots.
