And while it's true that change and innovation are required to stay alive, a more important rule of thumb is to give the people what they want. In the case of Smash, as is the case with Call of Duty, Halo, Uncharted, and every other successful game series, there was already an established, winning formula that people just wanted more of, so there was no reason to arbitrarily go in and change the fundamentals. If you owned a restaurant and developed a recipe for some dish that everybody thought was phenomenal, would you just completely change it the following week because of some blanket generalization that change is always necessary in every situation? No, that's not a very smart business strategy.
