Vita on its own terms was kind of lame, but the whole package of Vita, PSP and PS1 backwards compatibility, via Enso custom firmware with the SD card adapter, makes it goated years later.

It was one of the last handhelds to feel genuinely portable until the Switch Lite revision came along. If you ever want a laugh put a Deck next to a Vita/Switch Lite and pretend that beast is at all portable.

Small Note : there are also Re3-Vita (GTA3) & Re-VC Vita (GTA Vice City) out there - The original VitaDB source got removed out of fear of Take-Two taking down the website.

They could release this chassis with an internal hardware bump today and it wouldn't look out of place at all. The OG PSP is a little dated relatively speaking but the Vita is almost timeless. If I never knew of it and someone said this was made in 2023 or something I wouldn't bat an eyelid. If anything, I'd be surprised by the premium finish, given how tatty some more recent portable stuff looks.

The only thing that looks dated (and arguably was even at release) is the visual aspect of the UI. And perhaps the wonky logo (I always thought it looked classier with the simple 'PlayStation' text like on the pre-production models): .

I'd love for them to release another real, pocketable, portable handheld like this rather than just doing a giant tablet with fat controllers glued on either end. In an ideal world we'd get two variants. One with a smaller lower res display and lower clocks in a Vita-like shell and a larger unit more like the Portal with the larger and higher res display and higher clocks. Both new "PSPs" but the former would be redubbed the "Pocket" and the latter would take the mantle as the "Portable"...

I'll probably wait and see what Sony are gonna do in the next couple years then might pick up a Vita at some point and look into all the custom software and other tweaks. Only concern is I want an OG model in nice condition. Gonna hazard a guess that if there's any 'nos' going around it'd be going for a pretty penny.

I made some changes to my vita some time ago, still works beautifully. I wish sony would come out with a new handheld. I love sony products, just the experience of it all, same with their phones. I own a s24 ultra but would love to have their flagship in exchange. Full disclosure I dont own a PS5, but if Death Stranding 2 is exclusive to it I might have to get it. PC here mostly

I have thought about using my vita again. I can’t seem to find my charger anywhere. Never got into emulation ever before in any device. But I’m somewhat interested in using this again.
