If anything, given that 80% of sales are digital now, it would go the other way.

IMO Sony should have done this sooner and claim they would use the extra dough to increase the PS5 output by using plants outside of China.

LOL, you can't just mention the sanctions off-hand without delving into the reasons as to why the sanctions happened in the first place. That's like complaining that a dog mauled your leg without mentioning that you jumped into a fenced enclosure that says "Warning, this dog is vicious".

Feel free to quote me if/when MS follows suit and marks up the Series consoles. I'll gladly eat crow and admit to being an asshat if I'm wrong. A global economy effects everyone, but the way a corporation adjust thier operational cost, debt management and product pricing is up to them. There's a number of measures a company can take to hedge losses or retain earnings. Digging deeper into the customer's pockets should be the last one imo

I don't think it's "Select" markets price increase....? It's Global price increase and select markets get no price increase. (Like only U.S.)

I really feel for Japanese people. They've been stagnating for far too long for 30 years with no wage increase and gdp growth - it must hit them harder than ever.

Just a small reply here since it's off topic, but the western economies were collapsing before the war even started. Many news reports about inevitable recession (or worse) way before, even the major banks chimed in.

You're attributing way too many sales of the PS5 to scalpers to believe that's the reason why they are raising the price.

Loss maker? Not at all. You are bound to the store with the digital edition and the prices are impressive. The games are sometimes 50% more expensive than the disc in retail stores. After a handful of purchased games in the store, Sony has already made plus with the sale of the digital edition to you.

If Sony are losing money on PS5 hardware, it stands to reason they are losing MORE with DE just by virtue of the fact that no way are they paying $100 for UHD drives at scale.

Yes. But fuel/milk etc. are sold directly to consumer without additional money being made from consumer. That's why it is no-brainer to increase price of your product when you feel that you need to spend more money to make your stuff.

But consoles? Please...Sony is taking 30% cut from every transaction on their platform. They are charging cross-play fees. That's why Microsoft and Sony were always willing to sell their consoles at a loss. Because they knew that they will make that money by selling first/third-party games and other content. So what changed suddenly? PS5 was selling at a profit from August 2021. So Sony basically jacked up price of console so they keep that profitability of a hardware instead of taking a hit but still make huge amount of money on software.

So yeah. Not remotely comparable

If people want to buy the technically inferior console at a higher price and with its overpriced subscription service, it's not Microsoft fault.
In my opinion, MS has done everything right this generation other than the delay to their games (that's up to the dev studio heads you could argue).
It's time for consumers to use their heads and stop blaming others for their own entertainment product decisions. If you get both like I did, I get it. If you can only get one and it's Sony's product, I don't get the logic at this point. But to each their own.

So I guess we should stop pointing out Apple pricing practices etc. it is all okay as they provide "great" hardware. It is all okay. Yes we are dealing with inflation, energy price spikes (just to note energy companies, oil companies are reporting record profits, so it is not like they were on verge of losing money). It is more like them checking where is the line, first £70 games, now price increase where most of competents are cheaper than they were 2 years ago. Remastering remakes and selling it again and again. Shitty practices.

In all seriousness though, this increase isn't surprising. If the world can ride this out and a PS5 price increase is the worst that happens to some people, I'd consider that a good thing. Have a bit of perspective before getting outraged over this.

Even more curious is why is the US Market left out of the price increase. One would argue the US consumers would have the ability to pay a little more, at least compared to the other markets. Does this mean the systems were underpriced elsewhere? Certainly doesn't seem that way in the UK.

Maybe it's because Sony knows this is a polarizing move and the biggest blowback would come from the largest market...the US...so they avoided a price increase here.

Of course, I keep thinking of Sony like it's a Japanese company. It sure used to be. Pretty sure they are headquartered in the States now though. Hmmm...strange.

No, MS announced the price increase for the new gen.

In fact, I remember the conference clear as day since I was all in on Xbox back then. They announced $60 for third party (to cover the $10 licensing fees) and "swore" their first party would never be higher than $50... then Halo 3 happened and they raised their first party to $60 with that game going forward. Which a lot of us said would happen back then.

Why do you do this?

When did this happen? I remember $60 being the price point as far back as N64 days. And then N64 had games that were sometimes $80. Like that Mortal Kombat: Sub Zero game. Are you saying at some point MSRP was $50?

Disc based consoles were $40 to $50 for games. That was one of Sony's selling point to the PSX/PS2. (You pay more for carts).

When the 360 was launching, it was announced that 3rd party games would be $60 (to cover the $10 licensing) and their first party would remain $50. Which it did the first handful of games, until Halo 3 happened and it was $60 from there on out.

So the first game they increased for first party came 2+ years later, when the entire industry had shifted to $60.

While the article I posted is talking about Sony wanting to increase price even higher than $70. Comparing them is false equivalency.
