No. They are posting record profits. They are supposed to lose money during hardware launches and they somehow managed to avoid that and posted $3.25 billion in profit in their 2020 fiscal year.

And I really dont want to hear any excuses about the pandemic or inflation. This is not the first time the economy has been bad. Sony released the first playstation in 1994. There have been two major recessions since. Including a dot com crash and a recession that killed billion dollar banks. No one raised any prices. In fact, Sony was still losing money in 2009 when they launched the Slim for $299.

Just like past generations, that is their goal... Unfortunately it is REALLY hard to redesign a cheaper smaller console when you can't even get enough materials for your current product. They'll get there eventually... when, shit man could take awhile.

Who knows. Too lazy to check. But it goes to show how even super profitable companies dont disclose profits by distinct product line either.

MS has 4 or 5 segments which each have many product lines in them. Xbox is in the one with Surface, Windows and search ads. They dont break out profits of these other products either in this segment.

What a coincidence. The country (USA) which Xbox and PS battle the closest has no PS5 price increase. So much for a publicly issued memo stating inflation, currency and global economic factors.

Theyve only done it in the countries because they know most of Europe will buy PS no matter what. Only the UK is somewhat of a battleground in that region.
 
Is this the first time ever a console maker has INCREASED their prices? It's funny but honestly not surprising. The cost of everything I buy has basically doubled in the last year ☠️
 
It just sings a massive indictment against the competition that they have the balls to do this. They know full well that they have the marquee title releasing this holiday, going up against...daylight.

MS really need the Activision deal to go through to have something to counter with this holiday.

Many things have gone up, but many things have stayed the same. I dont think the price of bananas, yogurt and chicken have gone up in 20 years.

I'm scoping out new microwaves. Same prices as the first one I bought long time ago. Low end models $100, mid tier $150, good ones $200.

Honestly no longer think PS5 i going to outsell PS4 and the only way it can come close is if they keep it on the market much longer.

The demand was extremely strong out of the gate but it's starting to stagnate. 2 years have passed and it won't be the new kid on the block soon.

I think this is another PS3 generation for Sony where they do good but lose marketshare. Hopefully they get their heads out of their ass and get rid of Ryan.

I really don't give much of a shit personally (capitalism, what can you do?), because I already have one... But with so many of their loyal fans still struggling to get one it's kind of rough that they are getting shafted with the price increase. They would have bought one if Sony had it's act together more on production, and it would have been at the original price. So it's a double shafting for them. Hassle and disappointment of trying but failing to get one, and then when they can eventually it costs more? Thanks Sony lol.

Perhaps those people affected should consider an Xbox at this point?

They're doing it because there are shortages and will be for a while and quite frankly they can, because the limited supplies in the countries listed will easily sell them out. but bad will from consumers is not something Sony should be flirting with right now. Crazy competition and the economic downturn make this not a great thing to do right now. I already have a PS5 myself and Sony hasn't in any way sold me on next gen yet.

The worst for me is stuff like spider man remaster hidden under mm only. I want physical disc!!!
And the fact that they are not selling some cheaper online only ps+ without any games. I don't need any games. Just want the console to function online in souls. At least death stranding don't require plus.
At this point they should make on line free. It's just embarrassing

Wonder if the price in the U.S. will increase in the near future? Depending if this impacts sales or not in the areas it is increasing, if it stays the course and they continue to sell out in markets where it increased in price, I wonder how long it would be before they pull the trigger in the U.S.?
 
They raised it in the markets PS is strong in.
The didnt in the US to stay competitive with XBox.

Smart, but still a dick move for everyone who hasnt been able to get one due to scalpers.

A lot of the prices that have gone up are due to supply chain issues that have not affected electronics since the chip shortage. I see electronics go on sale all the time. Grocery stores have seen some items increase in prices but not all because not everyone is suffering from the same trucker shortages or other supply chain issues.

Nintendo, Microsoft, Nvidia and AMD AIBs all use the same supply lanes. If this was such a huge issue, they would all be raising prices. Instead, GPU prices are in free fall. I think this is due to underwhelming software sales, Jim's inability to manufacture more consoles, and his dumb decision to fork over $3.2 billion on one studio that hasnt released a game since 2017.

Supply dramatically increased while demand simultaneously fell off a cliff. Crypto bros dumped a ton of supply on the market the moment their mining businesses went bust due the crpto crash. They also happened to be the primary purchasers of GPU's over the last ~2-3 years.

MSRPs have remained the same but both Nvidia and AIB's have no choice given the amount of inventory that has been dumped on the market in such a short space of time.

You can't just look at the prices of GPU's and jump to assumptions, you need to look at the why. The cost of manufacturing has remained the same and there are still chip shortages (and manufacturing backlogs) in certain areas (for example automobile).

Worth listening to Nvidia's earnings call for a bit more insight:

But consoles? Please...Sony is taking 30% cut from every transaction on their platform. They are charging cross-play fees. That's why Microsoft and Sony were always willing to sell their consoles at a loss. Because they knew that they will make that money by selling first/third-party games and other content. So what changed suddenly? PS5 was selling at a profit from August 2021. So Sony basically jacked up price of console so they keep that profitability of a hardware instead of taking a hit but still make huge amount of money on software.

So yeah. Not remotely comparable

Are you seriously telling me a business isn't going to adjust its prices if everything they buy to make that console goes up? Transport is up, so is inflation and the yen is dropping.

Sony trying to put a spin on their old PS3 tactic again, remember you can just work a second job to buy one as it's a luxury after all.

In 2005, Ken Kutaragi, the Father of the PlayStation, talked about consumers working more, just so they could afford his upcoming console. According to Kutaragi, said the PS3 is "for consumers who think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

Fair enough. Not sure what part of the world you're in but where I'm at EVERYTHING has gone up.
